In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I've made it north to Central California to meet up with John Kenny in Morro Bay, CA. Our target: my first lingcod from the kayak. Watch as I knock off a few bonus species on my way to my first ling. The biggest one gets a little payback, too...
Watch until the end for a preview at episode 6!
Comment below and tell me if you've fished in Cali or ask me any questions you guys have! I reply to every one.

I saw a Great White eat a seal 10 feet from the boat north of where you are above santa Cruz . Head on a swivel won't help . I will come from straight underneath with no warning . But all hell will break loose once it does . Then 2 bites later and the gulls come in for the scraps . Minute later , no sign anything ever happened . Just awesome .

Back in the 50's and 60's my Dad would catch 20 to 30 lbs Lingcod off the rocks just north of San Francisco..... I've taken several in the 20 lbs range, spearfishing off Cannery Roe in Monterey.

We had Ling Cod fish and chips tonight. Caught last May and vacuum bagged. Our season in WA is only 6 weeks and starts May 1st. Live Sand Dabs make fantastic bait for Lings. I would bonk fish ASAP and bleed all fish as soon as possible. It's better for them and the quality of the meat.

You need to bring a descender device when rockfishing. It is a aw here in Oregon to have one on board if fishing for rock cod. It is about a 2 dollar inverted hook that goes on a big weight and you just put it on a old rod and you drop the fish to the depths and it releases pressure. Putting holes in the fishes air bladder most likely just kills them....
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 6 лет назад
+erik s good information Erik, thanks. I wasn't rockfishing intentionally, and that's not a law in California, but I'm all about treating the fish as well as possible. I'll remember that for next time.

I recently found out (not living in alaska for many years) that yup there firstly all commercial boats and in secondly in 2021 *all* boats being fished from period will be required to have deepwater release devices for rockfish. They are really simple, easy to make yourself and probably save a lot of fish.

I live in Morro Bay. Worked for Virg's sportfishing for years. Love it out here but it's definitely falling off even with conservation efforts. It's Gopher city in most spots. Fish 5 was what we call a blue bass. Idk if you got a "Johnny Bass" but they have a good fight for their size. Fish 6 was definitely a Sand dab. A good Halibut spot is the water inlet next to the rock for PG&E. Deeper waters will be more rock halibut and they love biting on chrome. Excellent call on the squid. Squid on purples or tigers have good results. Glad to see you had a good time. Really like the channel!

Spooner's Cove is cool. I don't have a kayak though, so it's not AS cool. There's some huge perch though. I'm excited. Should be headed that way next week. Gonna sift through the kelp to see if there's calicos close to shore.
