Thanks for this video! I always felt more comfortable placing my boat upside down but stopped due to peer pressure lol. Everyone else puts it right way up. Then one day I heard a crack when one of them was tightening it. What kind of foam pads are those? I’d like to purchase them
Pretty much nothing. But, the presenter is making the best of a very un-ideal situation. If you buy a $5000 kayak, a $400 set of roof rack cross bars, you also get the proper $180 cradles to conform to the hull so that the straps can properly hold the boat. If you suddenly must carry an extra boat to get that person home, this is a thoughtful emergency backup. I do like how the presenter points out how you ideally want to cinch down straps over the bulkheads- the hull won't want to crush in. This could both damage the boat and allow the straps to loosen.
The bow lines the most important part. It keeps the bow from lifting up at highway speed. You really only need it on the longer kayaks or skis. My stellar Falcon will actually lift a little bit when I'm going 65 if I don't use a bowline. The other reason for using a bowline is when the wind gets under the kayak it lifts it and puts a tremendous amount of torque where the rack connects to the car and could possibly rip it off.
