@@danneff4780 So, I actually never got around to finishing the rooftop tent add on. Some big changes in life moved my focus to other things, but it works great for hauling 2 predator pdls! I towed it 11 hours away with now issues. I still plan on building it up. I'll post as soon as I do.
Follow up question if you don’t mind. Have you ever hauled one of your kayaks on one side or the other and nothing else? If so I was wondering if you had any swaying issues? I wouldn’t think so. But as I was considering a walk way down the center instead of a 3rd set if runners, wondered if that would work? Thanks
I only have two sets of runners. Mine are spaced so I can place one on each side or one in the center. Only using 4 rails. But, yes. I have ridden down the road with a kayak on one side. No issues. I had 2 old town predator pdl's at the time. Now I have a pdl and a Hobie PA14 360.
Ok, I just ordered 8” bunk risers. I still need to get the 2x4s and carpet. How would you suggest I find the correct height and width for my kayaks. I use Bonafide ss127 s. Thanks for for help sir. I also need to go to the hardware store and pick up some mounting hardware. Like the U style bolts and screws. Thanks again
I put mine on at the max height, just snug. Then set the yak, unloaded on top and loosened the bolts until I could slide them down a bit. Then I used a sharpie to mark the line. Take the yak off and torque 'em down. I also have my center ones lower than the outside ones so the yaks lean into each other when there's two.
The bunks are just pressure treated 2x4's covered in outdoor carpet. Got them from local hardware store. The brackets came from West Marine. 8" bunk brackets and the appropriate "U" bolts for your trailer cross member size. And I bought lag bolts to mount the 2x4's.
I love this set up. I just purchased a trailer like yours and wanted to do the same thing with mine. The simplicity is perfect. Can you tell me how you strap your kayaks down? I was considering the auto boat straps but not sure. I definitely want something that is quick and easy. Probably attached at one side so I don’t have to worry about them getting taken or packing them away. Thanks for the advice!! Love the video
I was originally going to get some mounted ratchet straps and permanently mount them to the trailer, but I fish a lot of salt water and found that they corrode very quickly so I opted to just go with two sets of small ratchet straps. I've used them for years with no problem. The trick is not going so tight you deform anything and I run them through spots on the yak that they can't slide out of. I store them in the lock box on the tongue.
