Kayaking 2000km around the southern tip of Africa

Africa by Kayak: In 2007, Beau Miles attempted to paddle the 4000kms from one side of Africa to the other. Starting in Mozambique and continuing along the South African coast Beau allowed 5 months to complete the voyage. With him for over half the journey was Jared Sharples of New Zealand. Together the pair experienced the magnificent coast until Jared, crippled with sickness, left the expedition. Beau paddled alone for 6 weeks, experiencing for the first time in his life, a truly nomadic, solo existence. Battling huge surf, Beau only completed 2000kms of the original plan after realising that his trip wasn't about kilometres gained but rather the quality of the experience.

Since the release of this film, I have watched every one of your videos and they inspired me to get out and explore the world around me. It's because of this inspiration that I began kayaking a few months ago. Thank you for creating such incredible content and helping me ignite a brand new hobby that I am so passionate about!!!

Beau! We met in Richards Bay South Africa. I was amazed to see you paddle up to the international morring (27:43). I'm not sure if you remember having dinner on my captain's boat with us. I was helping Ginni (an Australian) sail around the world, my name is Dave (from California). Congrats on finishing your journey and making a great documentary about it! I'm amazed that youtube just recommended this when you did this back in 2007! That bit with the official wearing your life jacket backwards is priceless and somewhat symbolic :) If you ever want to dip a paddle in the pacific, I've got an extra kayak with your name on it in California.

It was quite sad re Andrew McCauley. I hope his wife and son are doing well. I was following his adventure, and was moved to donate to his wife and son after he didn't make it. The video of him leaving the beach at the start, paddling away in tears, and the call "Kayak One, Kayak One" are indelible in my memory. Paddling has brought many happy times, but that was by far the saddest.

Beau, your film’s stand the test of time. I’m watching this in 2021, and the archival feel to your journey, has already oxidized itself through your blood, sweat, and tears. I’ve never had the opportunity to make such a journey myself, but I’m living vicariously through the riptides of your life. It feels a little bit like a microcosm to your adulthood. I hope you go back one day, and rewatch these films, seeing yourself time traveling through the decades, and inevitably finding yourself back in those moments. Relive them if you can. Many people will likely never attempt even one of the adventure you’ve embarked on. You’ve amounted to more than I can count on both hands and feet. Man, you’re a hero. I hope we cross paths in the future. Mac

I think this guy is incredible. I went travelling in 1989, before it was so popular to take a gap year and travel to far out of the way places. It didn't matter how far from civilisation you got, in a high mountain pass in Tibet or the jungles of Madagascar there would always be an Aussie with this sort of enthusiasm pop up. Places where I'd not see another Westerner for days. It's long been an important cultural thing for Australians to go on adventures but this guy is something beyond most other humans. He makes me want to go on more adventures When you are young you have to seize those opportunities and not just dream about it. I remember thinking if I work a normal job and take two weeks vacation somewhere I want to see a year it will be 26 years to spend one year of abroad seeing the world. This guy knows how to live and seize the day.

exactly. this is why Nietzsche to now to even centuries later when there will be man-made stem-cell organs making humans as close to God as can be, the puzzle of meaning will still be there. until we realize it doesn't have to be the same for everyone and that it is okay for you to give your life the meaning you want to give it, from where you are in life and have it change as you evolve and it doesn't make any of it less true/authentic. today's truth might be obsolete tomorrow but it doesn't make it false today. your truth might not be anyone else's, but it doesn't mean it is not true for you.

Watched every video of yours after finding your channel yesterday, had a stress fracture in my foot from a week , can't think of anything else but running, But your films made me realise the importance of every aspect of an adventure wheather it be taking a break or listening to my heartbeat spending time with ourselves imploring while exploring. Have a good day mate idk why I've did what i did in my past 20 years of life but I'm making every year of my life count from now on pushing towards my ultimate goal of having a balanced life with the forces of expansion and survival equating eachother.

I love this. We still have two sons, luckily. No 1 son fractured skull, top & bottom palate after kayaking down Ardeche gorge and slipping down a crevasse when jumping off the Pont d'Arc. He recovered and trekked round South America to meet: No.2 son, who was trapped under a stop rock on same river, but rescued by someone reaching down and finding his BA. No. 2 son spent a year in the Guyanese rain forest with an indigenous tribe and nearly lost it canoeing down to the Kaiteur Falls, and working in a gold mine. Both now in their late 20s, and still taking risks. I won't explain what example their 2 parents set, but ice climbing, paragliding, motorcycling are involved!
