Mike and Kayla Hodge had to make difficult decisions for their son Calder when he was younger. Decisions that no parent is prepared or trained to make for their child, the choice to have Calder’s legs amputated has forever changed the path Calder has decided to take. Naturally as a parent you are protective and want to do everything you can to protect and keep your child safe. When Calder approached his Mother about playing full-contact football her natural and first response was “absolutely NO”. After months of convincing and Calder’s brothers rallying for him to play full-contact football, Kayla caved and allowed Calder to take risks and follow his dreams.
Quickly Mike and Kayla both saw their son thrive and achieve goals and break down barriers of what others thought were impossible for a limb limited athlete. Calder’s parents realized that football was more than just a sport for Calder but saw that it was his true passion and an outlet for him to be free.
The platform that Calder has created for himself alongside his parents, proves that nothing is impossible and the sky is the limit when you have passion, dedication, and determination. Football fuels Calder as an individual and a spokesman for young athletes to motivate them to work hard and follow their dreams.
Football has opened up opportunities for Calder that would have not been there otherwise but also has opened up opportunities for the bullies and trolls to go after their son. However, that only fuels Calder to go harder and drives more passion into his game.
Mike and Kayla can be found at every football game cheering on their son and do not question the choices he makes for his football career. They are proud to be Calder's parents and feel that their son was given to them limb limited for a reason and would not change one thing about the journey God has given them. They stand beside Calder in the pursuit of his dreams of becoming a motivational speaker and having an NFL career. Mike and Kayla Hodge are proud of Calder's success and are excited about his bright future ahead. They know that Calder will have a positive impact on his generation and all those who come to know his story.
