On April 12, 2012, we conducted a test of the new Casavant Organ in Helzberg Hall for the benefit of our audience members who sit in the choral loft. Executive Director Frank Byrne took an informal video of the event featuring organist Dr. Jan Kraybill.

If an organ can send tingles down my spine, it passes the test. This one did and this is just the youtube video I'm watching.

I love the sound of this magnificent organ. My choice seat would be close to the 32’ contra Bombarde!

A bit more info: The full name of the organ is the Julia Irene Kauffman Casavant Organ, Opus 3875. It has 79 stops, 102 ranks, and 5,548 pipes

My church organ is a small 25 stop North German voiced Casavant. Pure tracker, with no combination action. Not even a 32' stop. Yet despite it's small size, it's so incredible for Bach, that the greatest Bach organist of our time, Peter Hurford, came all the way from England just to record on it. People don't realize that Casavant has been building organs for almost 150 years! Along with Flentrop, Casavant are truly the titans of German style pipe organs.

We have a small Casavant in a church in Toronto, that is awesome for Bach. Casavant is a really old school organ builder that would have thrilled organists from 100's of years ago.

You made a wise choice in picking Casavant. They are probably the closest thing to an top tier old world organ builder in the world today.

Dr Kraybill is a superb organist. This same instrument, albeit on a larger scale, is installed in the temple of the Church of Christ in Independence, MO. I, personally, like the Independence organ better...just a personal preference.

Terrific Sound!!! I put a Casavant (52 ranks) in the church where I was the Director of Music. I miss that organ as I left that position. I am so happy for you. Can you do something about the glaring lights above the console?
@djmotise
@djmotise 6 лет назад
Leo Wanenchak YOU did not put a Casavant in any church. Casavant did. And your church paid for it. Stop with the nonsense.

Sounds great, but are there any 32's, especially a 32' Reed and if so, then why wasn't that stop (or any 32' stops) used in the demonstration? EVERY time I've heard this Saint Saens piece, full organ was employed INCLUDING the 32; Reed if the organ had one, and I can't imagine Casavant not including that stop (even at half length) in this design.

Of course it has 32 foot stops. But you aren't likely to hear them through a RU-vid recording on computer speakers even with a typical computer speaker system subwoofer

I would not like the case for a church, but I think it is fitting for an art center or hall such as this. One doesn't want a hall organ to look like a church organ.

Not true. Wooden resonators are quite common for bass reed pipes. Particularly in the 16' or 32' octave.
@harrystudt

I take lessons on a Casavant and the 16' and 32' Bombardes are wood, plus my organ teacher told me that wood bombardes sound much better than metal bombardes, so they should be made out of wood instead.

*Placing all the pallets for the Clavier des Pedales must've been a nightmare* - the Bourdon 32 woods and Montre 16 tin-leads don't line up as I expect of tracker builds. Not so severe a puzzle, the Grand-Orgue; the Reçit must be hidden behind the GO Bourdon 16 and Préstant 8, but they're close enough to match power.

When an "out-of-town" organ builder wins a contract for an instrument,especially a larger one, local firms are often employed, by prior agreement, to work as sub-contractors, so in the end, there is work for all.
@KCMDButcher42

Nice softer sounds, but not dynamically aggressive enough to really crown a full symphony. A little too tame, even at full organ. Needs a heroic Tuba under expression.

Yes. I was there for the dedication of the instrument, as well as on several other occasions, including a masterclass... I've also discussed it with the curator and some other organ builders I know, that have seen and heard the demonstration of the instrument. Several signed a pinned letter to Casavant regarding this. I am from Kansas City, and have followed this instrument closely from early on in its planning and construction stages. Have you heard it in person?

Why, when you have one of the most storied organ builders in the United States - Reuter, did you go to Canada for an organ? Reuter is exceedingly capable of this kind of fine work!!
@PointyTailofSatan
@PointyTailofSatan 8 лет назад
Casavant is probably the greatest baroque organ builder in the world today (founded in 1879!), but because they are based in what is effectively a backwater (Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada), they often get overlooked. I have played two small Casavants in Toronto, and I would take them in a heartbeat over an other builders organ twice the size.

This video is a total joke. Are we supposed to hear 32' ranks recorded with a handycam internal microphone? Why not use proper recoding gear to capture the true sound of the instrument? There is no frequencies below 100 Hz in the audio, as listened through professional monitoring headphones. Can not even hear 8' fundamentals.
