This is a relatively new development in the world of karate. Karate has historically done very little live sparring (i.e. training with full-contact, full-speed fighting like what you see in this video). They are branching out more into karate as a combat sport (hence "Karate Combat"). Those karate dojos that do incorporate more live sparring and training like the above will be more effective (at real-world combat) than those which do not.
