Worth mentioning is that each sequence gets it's own timeline which helps reduce clutter considerably. A very simple use of sequences might be to split a video into 3 parts, Intro, Main Video, and Outro. In a travel video, you might have a separate sequence for each city you visit. In DaVinci Resolve, this feature is called Multiple Timelines. In Adobe Premier, it's called Sequences.

I appreciate your concise explanation. I haven't done any video editing for a few months, and when I opened up KDEnlive today and saw this new element in the UI, I had to find out what it is. You were the first hit on Google.

This is really important for those of us who use external audio and don't want to render out a scene just to sync it.

Thank you, sir. This is going to improve my editing workflow tremendously. I've been binging your tutorial series and learned about so many things I didn't know KDenLive could do. You've earned a subscriber.

This looks like a nice little feature, just new to video editing but it makes total sense.

This seems like a really useful feature - hope it's not over my head and can understand how to use it. In my film days, I used to organize into scenes, so this might work similar? Thanks so much, Cheers

Hi Texpat OTG! You are correct in how the sequences can be used to create scenes. Using Sequences allows you to make individual edits of media, then use that whole sequence as one object in a "master" timeline. Ultimately, the end result is the same if all the pieces had been edited in the same timeline, but using Sequences gives a lot of control over organization and is much easier to adopt changes to a scene into a master timeline. Hope it helps!

@@Photolearningism Thanks for quick reply. This helps a lot. Am going to do some testing on some footage from an abandoned project to see how it works. This could be a significant improvement over working with long projects -- I had been making scenes by rendering projects in pieces -- this was very tedious and might affect quality -- not sure about that. This sure could be a big league improvement. Thanks much!

What new video editing features would make your day with improving video production?

Past month I've been experimenting with Sequences of Scenes with Kdenlive. Needless to say I going back to a straight Master for now. I found it very quirky. Sometimes it would process a seq sometime it allow the animating and audio in the seq but drop the video, no rhyme or reason.

Hello, thank you for the video, I have a question. Let’s say I have a project and group some clips in Sequence 1 to a Sequence 2 for better overview. Is it possible to „unsequence“ Sequence 2 again, that the clips are separate in Sequence 1 again? Thnk you
@Photolearningism
@Photolearningism 11 месяцев назад
Hi tiwelus! Thank you for the question - to my knowledge, any changes with the sequence would need to be edited within the respective sequence. Taking your example, the grouped items in Sequence 2 that are referencing Sequence 1 would need to be changed in Sequence 1. The good news is that the changes are dynamic, in that the sequence wouldn't have to be reloaded and should accept the changes as implemented. Hope that helps!

I used to edit on OpenShot but it failed me in that it played video in a stuttering motion. Also, it didn't like the type of video I was producing. I was using stills and timing the scene changes to the audio beats. I used 100+ stills in a ~45 second long video. However, I am not producing that kind of video anymore. A few months back, I started producing scriptless videos. Now, I am using CapCut video editor. But a software engineering friend is gifting me with a laptop with Linux OS. With both the desktop version of CapCut and the mobile it does what I want it to do. When I was doing scripted videos, I would record the audio separately from the video. I would process it through audicity to speed it up. Then build a a video around that audio track. CapCut does do automatic pitch correction when speeding up or slowing down video. Can Kdenlive do this? Further, can you increase video speed in smaller incriminates like 1.1, 1.2, ... 1.9, 2.0% faster?

@Photolearningism 9 месяцев назад
Hi the 999 Show! Thank you for the comment! Kdenlive does indeed have "pitch compensation" when changing the video speed - there is a checkbox when using "Change speed". Also, it can work with speed changes up to two decimal places when changing the percent of speed. It can either support speed changes using multiple cuts in sequence with different speeds, or also has Time Remapping, which is essentially "Speed ramping". Hope that helps!

There are also many pitch changing effects you can use under the categories Tap Plugin and Pitch and Time.

Latest and greatest version¿Nate? Are you kidding? I started using the new version and it ended up corrupting my important timeline files into smithereens. After this happening three times, I DON'T TRUST THIS VERSION.... It will important the project up to 68 percent and then I get a nag screen "the file is corrupt and cannot be loaded." I've totally lost trust in Kdenlive, in spite of these new great features.....

Hello Ivars, hope you are well! It's been a while since I've used Kdenlive less for this reason, with each update new bugs, new problems and even old bugs return... This is very annoying, you expect that with each version of a software it will be more solid, more robust, has better performance and evolving... but in my opinion sometimes Kdenlive goes the other way around, making the new version worse than the previous version... Things like that made me quite upset so nowadays I use kdenlive a lot less for editing. Of course, it's still good software, especially if you take into account the project as a whole, but these things led me to restrict its use. I saw in a forum a lot of users complaining about bugs in this new version but honestly, this happened with other releases too... and so it's not possible to continue. I support the project but it's getting more and more complicated!

Hi Ivars! Thank you for the comment - I can certainly empathize with your frustrations, having hit a few dead ends and bugs myself in Kdenlive. I've come to expect a few challenges in my decision to use open source software, as the development is often rapid and accelerated for community use. I also acknowledge that the software is free and significantly more powerful than other options (even some commercial tools). Utilizing open source does impose some risk on the consumer side (for bugs and such), but also provides more frequent updates and tools. As with any workflow, one or another respective tools may be better suited based on video editing requirements and it's good to use the best fit for the scenario. I do wish you the best of success in finding a tool that meets your needs! Just for curiosity if you don't mind sharing, which operating system was being used (Windows, Mac, Linux)?

@@Photolearningism I am using WIndows 10. I have retreated back to what I think is the last "safe" version of Kdenlive, 22.12.2. I was lucky enough to find it and reinstalled it. No trouble. The "hotfix" for the 23.0.4 version didn''t change anything for me. It burped and blew up as the version before the "hotfix."

Your face was getting in the way of the things you were doing on the timeline. Could you remake it with your face somewhere else? I would find that helpful.

Thanks! My camera has been getting in the way lately - I'll be touching on this subject again in the coming weeks, but in the interim, is there an area of the video I can help clear up?

Tree root is awfully confusing and illogical. You have a scene and a sequence rooted on different levels. It doesn't make any sense.

Imagine a travel video, one in a series of many. So sequence 1 might be an intro to the entire series. Sequence 2 might be an intro to the 3 cities you are going to visit. Sequences 3-5 are for each of the 3 cities. And sequence 4 is the closing credits. Each has its own timeline and can be worked on separately. In practice, I'd rename the sequences to more representative, so sequence 3 might be renamed to "Barcelona".
