Definitely part of the movie’s absolute rewritings of what happened. While “based on a true story” movies do take some liberties, this movie is total fabrication. Like it’s bs. Some events happened. But the gists of it? Not at all what happened.

She also in real life hated PT Barnum and quit because she found him horrid and an abuser of his workers She publicly trashed him multiple times

It sucks so much. People don't like her character which also makes people not like her solo because they think she's a homewrecker and saying she wants more and nothing is enough

As evil as Barnum was, many of the "freaks" became famous and were able to have much better lives because of the circus. Not that Barnum planned it that way. He exploited anyone and everyone but he did not abuse the performers. He needed them.

Yeaahhhh that's why I didn't even want to watch this movie to begin with.

For me building up Barnum was bad but far worse was how they took people who were by accounts far better than Barnum and put them into roles in this story to be looked down on. Most people ended up hearing that this wasnt an accurate portrayal of the circle and its common enough that historical figures are built up that I guess I just cant get too worked up over it even if I dislike what was done (they really should have just fictionalized everything) but to potray James Gordon Bennett (the reporter) and Jenny Lind (the opera singer) when most people have never heard of them and most audience for this never heard how dirty this film did them, pisses me off.

Jenny Lind was very religious and world renown...but not to well know here in the US. Hans Christian Anderson was in love with her and wrote "The Nightingale" as a tribute to her (how she got the nickname). Mendelson, Chopin, Verde all knew her and even wrote songs for her. As I said elsewhere. She was 29 and Barnum was 60 there was no relationship of any kind.

He was so bad they couldn't even make him look good in a movie that tries so hard to portray him better.

Yeah, no mention of the real Barnum owning a slave just to exhibit her, nor the “mermaid,” none of that. My favorite story of the real guy was his way to get people to move through his museum faster-he put up signs reading, “This way to the Great Egress!” And people would rush to see it, only to find themselves outside, having gone through the exit door, aka, the egress.

@@kathyastrom1315 No mention of his political career either. He served 2 terms in the Connecticut legislature and served as the mayor of Bridgeport for a while. While in the legislature he did vote to ratify the 13th amendment (anti-slavery) even after having been a slave owner himself. Born a con man and stayed one his entire life.

And then quoted him at the end of the movie as if he was some wise, respectable person to look up to...

As pleasant as Loren Allred's voice is, she in not a coloratura soprano and the song was not operatic in the least. I saw that episode of AGT.

I agree, it bothers me a bit as well. She was a Coloratura soprano. As much as I enjoyed Loren Allred's performance, it was not operatic. Hans Christian Anderson's "The Nightingale" was a tribute to her and is how she got that nickname. All the composers of the time new her. It was said that she even sang to Chopin while he was dying from tuberculosis.

@@nightfall902 Definitely. I’m not saying it should be fully operatic, but something along the line of Phantom of the Opera’s Christine? And it’d been a nice change from all the other Singers in the film. But hey, I guess we can’t ask much from a film which presents Barnum as a more or less decent human being (or at least tries to).

@@VicNyke92 That's the most annoying part. In Lind's case, the only reason Barnum had any interest in her at all was for her fame, which was her operatic voice. Lind knew Mendelson. Chopin, Verde and others...some even composed just for her voice. The one amazing talent this woman had and they didn't even try to include it. Better to make her look like a greedy tramp.

What irks me more is the fact that her and Barnum purely had a professional relationship and nothing more and the movie taints her reputation horrifically. Like I don't particularly care about how they portrayed Barnum, whatever it was fine but it was completely unnecessary to do that to Jenny Lind for literal no reason at all.

The powers that be decided to give Lind one single facet - the woman who tries to destroy Barnum’s marriage (oh, and also considers the rest of the acts beneath her) in opposition with Barnum’s wife, who’s the perfect woman. How funny, is it not, that the woman with a profession is the “overly” ambitious one who doesn’t care about Barnum being married and the one presented as decent is the woman in the traditional role? Am I reading too much into it?

Barnum was also involved in the Titanic disaster, his company and financing skimped on building materials which was determined to have been a factor in some part of the sinking

I don't like what they did to his/her characters, but this doesn't seem to be true.... she quit the tour bc she didn't like his advertising, but they parted ways amicably and both made a bunch of money (which she did donate). She had her own issues though, as did most people at this time period... people seem to like narrating in the opposite direction too since it, I guess, makes it look worse for him. he was bad enough without needing it though

Jenny Lind quit after 93 concerts for Barnum (finished the US tour) ...she simply got tired and Barnum kept on pushing for more. After leaving the circus she carried on for another year on her own before retiring. She was 29 when Barnum hired her, he was 60.

Jennie Lynd's portrayal is what lowkey makes me believe in ghosts. Only the Petty Spirit of PT Barnum himself could influence not only a movie that made him look like a misunderstood underdog, but that painted her as a red-headed vixen specifically.

Yeah I agree with that. While Highschool Musical was entertaining at best it really wasn’t my thing at the time despite it being a point of obsession with my two younger sisters and my mother. When we were kids we had one big tv in the living room and no iPads or iPhones or iPods to watch anything on until mid- middle school. We had to watch everything together, meaning that if one of us wanted to watch something different than the other two, guess who wasn’t watching shit if they couldn’t deal with it. So I must have watched those films a million times over the course of my childhood. I only developed an appreciation for it later in life when he started branching out and doing other roles that weren’t Disney or musical related. His career has been a diverse amount of roles and showcased his talent solidly and now when I look back on those annoying musical movies especially after I watched this movie I don’t feel as annoyed or embarrassed to admit I enjoyed it and admire the start to his career. He’s one of those actors that has now done almost everything when it comes to range in tv and movies. I think this is true for a lot of Disney actors though, for the ones that moved on, you don’t need to like their early starts to fame to appreciate the talent that got them where they are today.

There's always like this fake ass glow around historical movies, either to make it more dramatic/cinematic or simply they don't want to tell the true story to make (insert bad guy from history) look better. So, it's actually not that surprising. Still sucks tho.

They made him look like a FLAWED man, who was so wrapped up in himself and his show that he made his "freaks" feel exactly that. Like freaks. It eventually all blew up in his face. Did they make him out to be AS bad as the real dude? No, but they didn't make him out to be a saint either.

Reading about her would most likely prove to be more accurate than anything Hollywood would ever produce.

By the standards of the time, Barnum was not overly abusive to the performers....he needed them and used them, he wasn't stupid. Many became famous because of the circus and were able to have better lives because of it. Not something that Barnum planned of course.

Yeah there were a few literal bumps during rehearsal but I remember they mentioned they were quite grateful that they miraculously had no actual accidents considering their stunts can be dangerous 😂

There are still zoos and private citizens that own wild animals and mistreat them. It's not a question of ownership ..... it's a matter of proper care. There are domestic animals that are equally mistreated. When we isolate one offender like the circus, it takes the pressure off all the other offenders.

I remember seeing an actual tiger show when I was 5 or 6 at our city's state fair they did every summer and our local circus also had Elephants and Lions when I was little. I didn't get the impact of what was happening AT ALL!!! (May I add we live in a very northern state in the U.S. called Maine and it snows here anywhere from Halloween through Mother's Day sooooo not prime habitat for those kinds of animals by any stretch!!!!!!!!) Child me liked seeing all the animals and had no idea what was happening😔😔😔😔😔 It wasn't until I was around 12ish that I started to understand why there were people outside the circus every year protesting what was happening. By that point, I had started to look into what was happening and watching movies like Water for Elephants and watching various documentaries on what was happening at these circuses. I was horrified by what I saw and I stopped going anytime they had advertised wild animal shows. I started getting back into horses at that point as well as going to the local 4H shows they did at our local state fair instead and seeing all the bunnies, chickens, and cattle they had on display as well as the horse shows they ran and the cart pulling shows they did that were always super interesting to watch for me. The last animal-related thing they offered that I went to was this Royal Gala horse show from Spain which ended up being people basically doing liberty training with their horses and riding them bareback..... which my inner horse girl thought was super cool!!!!! Then they did state that these guys from Animal Planet were going to bring their snakes, lizards, and mostly alligators that they had rescued and rehabed and these ones couldn't be released back for various reasons. They run a sanctuary for bigger reptiles in Florida and they were at our local state fair showing off some of their creatures. (To be fair, our summers get pretty warm in late July. August is the worst in terms of heat. Sooooo.... I imagine the cold-blooded reptiles were fine and dandy since it can get up to the 100 degrees Fahrenheit range in August which is when our local state fair is, and when the reptile people showed up.) They put on a really interesting exhibit!!!!!!!!!! Those were the only two shows I sought out watching, aside from Cirque de Solei when they came this past winter (Although, I couldn't get tickets in time to see them😭😭😭) I haven't been to the circus since I was 12 sooooooo..... I have no idea if they are even still here or still do wild animal shows anymore!!!!! I used to love our local state fair they did every year, but after so long it wasn't worth the entry fee and so we stuck to going to our local free music festival they did every year before the younger kids start school again!!!!!!!!! THAT was always a blast!!!! They do lots of different musical groups from all over, including Indigenous singers, which were always super cool to listen to!!!!!!! Sometimes I'd go with my Mom, and sometimes I'd go with a group of friends, it depends!!!!! The food booths are always to die for, and so are the crafters who were selling their products!!!!! Always new things to do and listen to every single year!!!! Which is why we all STILL go all these years later!!!!

@@nightfall902 yes but circuses where what was being discussed here. Whataboutism is not a good look btw. Circus is not a proper environment for wild animal, ever. Domesticated animals are used to working with humans and finding a species typical environment for a dog, cat a horse is much easier than an elephant or a lion. Private citizens mistreating their animals is a different issue. They are also less likely to try to train lions to do tricks. Most of these issues could be treated with good animal protections laws but if they don’t exist there’s nothing to force people’s to be less shitty.

@@emmakulmala2173 Well if you want to be period specific... Why not include game hunting? Very popular with the rich of that time. Ivory harvesting, mass killing of lions, tigers and all the rest to to be turned into rugs and other trophies. Whataboutism is not a good look...neither is narrow minded tunnel vision. At the very least know a little of the time frame your discussing.

Because I was talking about our current day world where for some reason having wild animals in circus (or god forbid as pets) is still legal in some places. As far as I know all the rest you mentioned is in fact illegal (aside from game hunting which is a whole other topic of discussion) and is done by poachers.

Barnum bought Lind unheard. He knew her reputation and paid her to perform. She accepted and had no idea how much more she was worth than what he was paying. There was no relationship. Barnum was 60 at the start of the circus and married his second wife 3 years later...a woman younger than his own daughters.
