I don't think i've ever clicked so fast! Mr Lif is a rabbit hole you'll love falling down. He has so many good albums, but i'd recommend Madness In A Cup off of Sleepyheads!
Yo, I wish I could discover all this again, I lived in RI and saw Lif perform Hella times live. Dude was one of the best stage shows in the underground. His voice commanded the crowd. Middle East in Boston and Ocean Mist out in RI. Were those special venues for underground hiphop then. Lif, Reks, Akrobatik, Sage Francis(Non-Prophets), Apathy, Virtuoso check all those people out.
Nice. Mr lif is a legend. This album is called I Phantom. The previous EP was called Emergency Rations and I Phantom was the name of the last track. A sheer classic
Dude, you're awesome...thank you so much for taking time out of your life to do this track. Glad you dug it for the most part. El-P mainly did the production on this album, if that explains anything...haha. You're pretty spot on that Lif is spinning a story because this is a concept album that follows a character trying to navigate their adult life. In the context of the album, this track is a dream the character is having where he's shot robbing a store and brought back to life by music, but now he's got a messiah complex where he's gonna save hip-hop from all the shit he thinks isn't hip-hop. He ends up battling himself though and realizes he's no better than the people he's railing against because they're all influenced by the same stuff he came up on (doesn't stop him from winning the battle though...haha). He wakes up to his alarm clock, realizes he's late for work and the next track Live From The Plantation kicks in. Should definitely check that one out too, if you're into it.
