Went to school with Keenan at Tuskegee Institute and we stayed in the same dorm. He was hardly the funny man that the world knows him now to be. He was an engineering major and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity (in other words, a smart guy). I remember when he told us that his was leaving school to go to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. We thought he was crazy to leave in his last year of school, but he obviously was not afraid to chase his dream and in doing so, brought his entire family with him to the top!!! It has been wild to watch the low-key, serious guy that I knew and interacted with in college, become the mega super-star, ground-breaking writer, actor and producer that he has become.
Yeah I think that's Gamma Phi chapter, we lived there there in the 70's behind Rockefeller Hall, dad was a professor in Vet medicine, What I love about your reply "Tuskegee Institute" can't get use to TU (sorry about that golden tigers ) OK now time to make a run to the Chicken Coop for a 3piece, " 06" till the day I die
Epic COMMENT! Takes an honest and true soul to offer real insight of another (which "they" knew), and give such a nonresentful response to offer such praise and respect ; ESPECIALLY, IN THESE TIMES! Bravo to you! And really thanx for the share! They were the best comedy group / satire, bar-none . Would love if they (WOULD) revived the gang. Even jim Carrey noted "if" they did reboot the show, that he would consider coming back to primetime. But AGAIN! Stellar comment.
I was in school studying Nursing when that show was popular. If anyone out there has been through nurse's training, you know how intense that can be. That show gave me a break from the endless studying. ❤
Do you remember the spinning wheel Device he brought out to explain how they the pick the topic the wheel was 95% white and 5% the rest and he spun the wheel and it landed on white he was surprised
@@hermanjames7202 Been a long time so no I don’t, but absolutely something I’d expect from them. For the era they were big risk takers and for me that was the biggest appeal.
I say this earnestly and mean no disrespect but why mention your race? There were at least two main characters on the show who were white, Jim Carey and Kelly Coffield. So what does your race have to do with watching and enjoying the show? All my friends watched this back in the day Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, etc. There was no race or cultural prerequisite to watch the show. It was simply an extremely funny show with a diverse cast that poked fun at anything and everything and we all agreed that it was extremely entertaining and funny.
@jaeshasway I am also curious of this 🤔. It's like the ppl that always have to add or mention that they have a bf or gf for literally no reason... no one cares! Lmao
@@jaeshaswayI’m curious as well why she mentions her race. It’s so distasteful and disgusting.White folks were on ILC as well.I’m gonna guess it’s her way of trying to be inclusive.
If you were the steward of the In Living Color tape or the Def Comedy Jam tape, you damn sure better bring it back to school tomorrow or at worst the next day.
Yes to all that. My parents, back in the day, loved Damon wayans skit: THIS OLD BOX, where he carried around his slop jar (a huge pickle jar with a pickle floating around in it), which looked waaaay too real😂😂😂
I love In Living Color! When comedy wasn’t afraid to push the envelope and when people weren’t offended by everything little thing. We need comedy like this back in 2024!!!
Comedy wouldn’t last like that in this world is so sensitive now it wouldn’t last I used to be a little comedian but now I don’t even tell jokes anymore because people are crybabies now.
“Alright Stop! While I do up my laces….this kind of thing happens every show, yo, I gotta learn how to tie a bow!” and his shoe went flying as he did those wild Vanilla Ice leg kick moves!😂😂😂😂
@laogalaxy3792 Yeah, and if it was for Rosie begging Kennan to let her work with her she wouldn't have been one and still haven't gave Rosie props for helping her
I read years ago, the Wayans’ parents didn’t allow them to watch television. So they entertained themselves by acting out skits at home. Thus, comedic stars were born. ⭐️
Yeah!! We used to watch this as a family!! 🤣🤣🤣 Fire Marshall Bill and Homie The Clown were my favorites. The Wayans Family is Iconic!! They need some kind of Achievement Award!!
@@doratheacarpenter9424 Lol, are kidding? I think todays generation would be objecting to all kinds of things in the original show. Most Comedians now a days walk on eggshells trying not to offend. But I agree, there are other things that used to be unacceptable or just plain wrong that are fully embraced as normal and acceptable now. (Or at least trying to be pushed as such.)
@@martycarter3306I Respectfully, except your opinion your entitled to your veiws just like I'm going to stand on mines, what's funny to you may not be funny to others. So with that being said HAVE A FIRE MARSHALL BILL KIND OF WEEK... LAUGHING 😃 LOVE❤️ LISTEN🦻and be kind.
My God, how I MISS this show! I’m a 55 year old man from Chicago. I was in my early and mid 20’s when this show hit the screen. And back then I could not wait every week when the new episodes came out. To this day, no sketch comedy show, IMO, had such a talented cast of comedians. I loved everyone on that show. If you didn’t laugh until you had tears in your eyes when watching In Loving Color, you didn’t have a sense of humor.
Remember, 'The Richard Pryor Show' was king, that's how 'In Living Color' got a lot of its great material... SNL was always weak and Mad TV was comic genius and they basically took from 'In Living Color' but all those 'In Living Color' cast members are legends just like all the cast members of 'The Richard Pryor Show' were legends -- just look at that cast Richard had on his show, amazing.
Oh, well if this is a contest about “which comedians do you remember whose work impacted American culture” then I wanna mention Redd Fox. I’d mention Lenny Bruce, but it seems like we’re focusing on television creators in this thread.
In Living Color walked so Chapelle could run. Keenan was the perfect engineer for that show. It takes a very special person to gather mega talents and know which ones would work well together and which ones wouldnt. Pushing Tommy David outside his comfort zone probably brought out humor otherwise wouldve been hidden.
@@oRealAlieNoNaw, he was part of the cast, not the show, white folks are not normally funny, but Jim Carey was definitely the exception, I still laugh at him to this day.
In Living Color was hands down one of the FUNNIEST, most iconic television shows OF ALL TIME! Those that know; KNOW. Back then, I don’t care what color your skin was, this show was all anyone talked about in school on Monday morning. This show invented “make them laugh so hard they can’t breathe and their tummies hurt! MOOHOOHAHAHAHAHA!” On top of the sheer brilliance and the scope of the writing and the talent involved, ILC launched so many careers. Where would laughter be without The Wayans Family? Keenan Ivory Wayans and family have brought us all so much laughter and joy throughout the years and for myself, if you can make me laugh so hard it hurts; I love you forever…and I do!!!
I don't remember her name, BUT that white girl was funny too. AND let's not forget David Alan Grier and Keenan's brother together that's was funny as well.
You ain’t never lied. Gen x at least had rebels with causes, laughter, and created things based off being latchkey kids. This generation is phucked. Rebels without a cause, unfunny, & no creativeness. Just remakes of whatever is out there in a corny way
I Agree This Is The Worst Generation That I'm Witnessing growing Up U Went To The OG's For Advice, And U Learned! And Listened, And Lived A Better, Healthier Life. This Is The Worst Generation In My Family, And In The Entire Hemisphere! The World Has What God JAH Said From The Bible, " People Have No Natural Affection Or Love For Each Other"! God Said When We Start To Hear Of These Kinds Of Things, Know That I Will Soon Be There On Earth, To Deliver The Righteous, And Destroy The Wicked! I'm Just Tryin To Be Ready!
Amazing how EVERYONE from that show branched off and left their mark in Hollywood. Even Jennifer Lopez dancing self hop scotched her way into Hollywood
@@clone1eighty7 Welp. Most out here “blowing domes” for free & struggling to pay their bills. JLo is rich & cant keep a hubby - so definitely don’t have good head game (apparently practice didn’t make perfect). 😂
Kenan's explanation of firing Kim Coles doesn't make any sense, which tells me that there were some problematic shenanigans going on that unfairly impacted Kim. But I'm glad that Kim was able to do more than bounce back with her role as Sinclair on the LEGENDARY "Living Single".
I agree, but the Writers in the last couple of seasons had both Synclair and Overton acting as if they had maybe half a brain between the two of them them!!! As if they were slow...😔
The rumor at the time was that was that one of the Wayans brothers wife saw that she was going after her husband and that's why she got kicked to the curb.
I loved 'In living color', I used to watch it every week & was 1 of the best sketch comedy shows of the 90's, hands down. Great recurring characters, fresh writing & the main thing, it was funny af!
In Living Color had some of the most incredible talent of any show. It was amazing they had that much star power. Other shows (SNL) did have popular stand outs, like Eddie Murphy and a few others but nothing like In Living Color.
Don't forget Chris Rock from SNL. SNL was maybe a bit more cerebral and not as much silliness. It may be time for SNL to end, not as good as it used to be. I did like ILC and have fond memories of that time and sketches. Mention it throughout the years. And, of course, Jim Carey kept the memory alive throughout his career.
Are you kidding me! Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Chevi Chase, Dennis Miller, Dan Ackroyd, , Adam Sandler, Dana Carvey, John Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealan, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Norm MacDonald, Will Farrell, Jimmy Fallon. Yeah, I guess you're right, just a few others!
as a middle aged white man....Let me just say this.. I PHUCKING LOVED THIS SHOW GROWING UP!!!! I honestly think today...no one, not even Jordan Peele or even Dave Chappelle, could pull off a TV show that would be 'out there' as ILC was in its hay day!
I've never seen a show as huge as In Living Color. The thing that surprised me most was that Tommy Davidson didn't become a huge star, but it makes sense now knowing about his struggles
The sad part about it is quite a few stars who started out struggling with substance abuse were able bounce back and soar Robert Downey Jr is one of them. He had a strong support system. Tommy doesn't
This show was definitely before its time. It was PHENOMENAL!!! It would air on Sunday night, after Martin. We would talk about both shows first thing Monday at work. I don’t think it could make it in 2024. Everyone is entirely too serious and over sensitive about humor.😅
Yes it was definitely before it’s time. Because he could air everything today and there would be no restrictions, since the media put any and everything on TV. Some things I don’t even wanna damn see they have it 😂 it’s sad that the reason he ended it is because of all those restrictions, that They kept making up on a weekly basis. And then started exploiting him or his show by showing reruns without his consent. SMH wonder if he ever sued them for that because it’s not right! They wanted to make their own money off of his show …or make more money rather. Greed at its finest.
Don't no body throw no stones Keenan signed the checks and catapulted the cast careers to do other work in the entertainment industry. Take the good with the bad and keep pushing
Keenan was one of the few who had that ' comedic genius' in his blood. When they look back now on America's funniest guys, Keenan is left out of discussion too often. Brother Damon was pretty much as brilliant as he was.
Tommy Davidson might be the most underrated and ought to be our generations 'Sammy Davis Jr' (still time) and its stunning the talent packed in that show's run.
The rumor was that Kim Coles was going after one of the Wayans brothers and the wife had come on the set and picked up on that and that's why she got kicked to the curb.
Not believing that Kim slept with Kenan. I'm guessing she did NOT sleep with him, so she had to go. "Living Single" would not have gotten her had she not left Keenan's show, so that cloud definitely had a silver lining ❤
I always noticed a drop in quality when he stopped appearing. But I also think the first two seasons had the highest level of writing. Season 3 started strong but seemed to get more low brow and vulgar just for the sake of it as it went on
@@justman4891 I unfortunately had absolutely no choice at the time to go to bed because I was in jail while in living color was in its prime, and when dayroom was over, IT WAS OVER and back to the cell. 😂
We need a new form of in living color to address alot of nonsense we see nowadays..a lot of things need to checked..we need shaming & honesty back..this new generation is weird and very sensitive..I miss the Wayans material..they called it like they saw it..
The fact that I still quote from: ILC, Dont Be a Menace, Scary Movie, Im Gonna Git You Sucka...testament to their impact on my entire life. Lets not forget Keenan also used to write for Eddie Murphy with Robert Townsend! "Hey Mon Got to go to Work"😂😂😂❤
