It's a great overview video on a topic that is valuable. However, while establishing PAR under your own tanks conditions is a very very useful metric; it's certainly not required for an average hobbyist. However, it can negate accidents like burning corals under lights a hobbyist isn't familiar with, or during an unfamiliar corals acclimation period. Where these things really shine is in aquaculture. Commercial producers should have this level of detail about there farm tanks. Having PAR data informs their ability to grow coral at scale across multiple systems. And matching the Farm's PAR value for your aquacultured Frag, is where having a PAR meter comes in handy. As you can match your own in-home placement at the same levels the farm grew the coral. This ability will improve success rates. But, it's not "required" by any means. And PAR is only one metric in how we measure the quality of light. Spectrum is actually a more valuable point of information, and yet it's still less-understood than it should be in the hobby. For example, the PAR charts in this very video intentionally mark from 400-700 nm for a very specific reason, yet how many hobbyist can dissect why? I really like Matthew, he does a superb job at introducing new hobbyist to a variety of topic they need to learn and presents the information in a way that is relatable and down to earth. But in that same consideration, care should be taken when trying to tell hobbyist's what is and is not "required". The new-er ones especially will not be able to tell the difference.

You're definitely not wrong here! You could easily buy lights and then copy someone's light schedule. But I do think it's important to not try to guess the PAR, and for that a PAR meter comes in handy. Necessary? I don't have a good answer for this, other than my own experience. I definitely messed around with my lights a lot more before having a PAR meter, because I never truly knew if a certain problem was a light issue. I definitely recommend all beginners to know what there PAR is.. Thanks for the comment!

A very important piece of equipment imo. Having a par meter handy will give you a good baseline through out your tank what your par numbers are. I’m using the apogee SQ-420. You’re right Matthew, it’s affordable and accurate..

I have the Bluetooth micro cache and I love it because it’s so easy to get a DLI reading, I believe DLI is far better to go off of then PAR just takes a whole day to truly measure

Oh that's really cool! Can you do that with the Apex PAR meter as well?

Charging $100 to return the par meter is WILD and disappointing.

Well this is the past! My new parwise is spectrometer - no more interference on 380nm! And it does DLI!

Avoid the expensive wand, get or use a handled algae scrapper, it already has the slight angle, you just need to make the screw hole a little bigger.

I got the new one love it and I have the apex I find from apex to the new blue is only about 5-10 par difference :) love both

I have an MQ510 but I don't seem to have an option for "Elec" or "Sun" (4:19 in the video), is this only on specific models?

Maybe Mathew should watch the BRS video on par meters that shows the Seneye is more than adequate for our needs.
@MyFirstFishTank

I did actually, but I also noticed it's an older video. It seems to be the recent reviews that are noting some issues with the PAR meters. I really don't like to recommend any product that doesn't get at least 4 stars, and this one currently doesn't.

How did people keep corals for decades without all these Costly "Necessities"...? It's just mind boggling...! I don't know why I keep watching these videos that are basically a $ale$ pitch... You "NEED" this and You "NEED" that....Then usually you need something to make it work better... lol Marketing has drove the cost of this hobby through the roof.... Great Job....!

Any parameters that don’t cost $300

The SQ-420 is probably the best cost effective option if you have a computer/laptop near your aquarium to plug the meter into. Still getting up there in price, but a good balance of price and performance for most hobbyists.

You could also just buy the same lights as a friend who has a par meter, and do exactly what they're doing. Or, buy a light that BRS has done in depth analysis on, and use their recommended settings.

Someone needs to fill the price gap!! Its like 200 or 600. These things are expensive for single use. More lfs need to rent these. I live in Miami and there are zero that rent then out. Very sad. Great video though 👊

To put it in as basic terms as possible, Step 1: Get a PAR meter (Matthew outlines some great choices in this video) Step 2: Test PAR Step 3: Adjust PAR until you're in your target ranges for your corals - you're shooting for 75-150 PAR for softies/LPS and 200-350 PAR for SPS. Step 4: Sit back and relax, knowing that you've set your aquarium lights up correctly the first time!

Any Para meters out there that don’t cost $300

I know Mathew said he didn't like the seneye but it seemed to work pretty good when Ryan tested it so your results may vary I guess... I have one and for 200 bucks I'm not complaining... Do I trust that it's 100% accurate? No... it's probably not, but what it DOES do is give me a general outline of the PAR in my tank and I can place my corals accordingly.

The Seneye is a decent option if cost is your #1 concern and you don't want to "rent" one. The SQ-420 is probably the best cost effective option if you have a computer/laptop near your aquarium to plug the meter into. Still getting up there in price, but a good balance of price and performance for most hobbyists.

@@alexguitar841 It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I struggle recommending products with under 4 stars. And I did watch that review, but it was from several years ago, and some newer ones, especially one from Parker's Reef and the subsequent Seneye response got me wondering if they changed their PAR meter somehow. I'm glad you've had a good experience though, and maybe I should give one of the new ones a shot and put it to the test!! :-)

@@MyFirstFishTank well seeing how much the cheapest apogee is going for I can understand the recommendation. The seneye isn't really great as a monitor. Hopefully they update their software one day...

A par meter isn't the only way to get there, but having some way of properly setting your lights is a must. That could be from using another reefer's settings proven to work, the data from the BRStv Investigates lighting episodes, or sometimes getting lucky 🙂
