It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the Gekko for the Sega Dreamcast, it's the Akura's little brother. It's an HDMI box that taps into the console's VGA signal for an enhanced definition gaming experience that's super easy to use. This is my review!

I still use my old trusty S-video cable. It works. When it will stop working I will use HDMI cable. After all PSVR set works with everything that has HDMI so I will be able to play -hentai adventure games- Skies of Arcadia in the way I wanted as a child.

Still amazes me just how good the Dreamcast, a console made in 1998 is capable of looking on a modern TV when hooked up with VGA or HDMI cables. Looks even better hooked up to the FrameMeister too which I was surprised about as people often criticise the FrameMeisters handling of 480p content, but I recently decided to give it a go by hooking up my Toro to it (Sending 480p over SCART) with FireBrandX's custom profile for the Toro and was absolutely blown away by how good it looks.

I'm honestly not sure why it's handling of 480p isn't that good, not really my area. I will say though that based on my experience using the Dreamcast and original Xbox with it, it still looks quite a bit better than it would going straight into a TV if you use the right settings. I've not personally used an OSSC but from what I've seen, they achieve rather comparable results, though the way they go about doing it is actually very different. The OSSC is not really a scaler so much as a line doubler / tripler / quadrupler. The FrameMeister is a more flexible / customisable device and has greater compatibility with TV's but does introduce about a frame and a half of lag (not something I would ever be able to notice in a million years but some people claim to be able to) whereas the OSSC is essentially lag free. The OSSC definitely seems to be better choice for 480p content whereas the FrameMeister is probably still the better device for 240p and 480i due to it's much more heavily customisable image and impressive de-interlacing for 480i content. You really can't go wrong with either though.

DAMO 08 do you play on a hdtv or hd monitor? What resolution is your display. Do you use a ossc or framemeister? What is the best way to hook this all up, hoping to go with a modern display

Kenneth Mitchell I just use a samsung 32 inch 1080p TV but I've also hooked it up to my 4k sony bravia xe9005 and it looks great on both so I wouldn't worry about which desplay to use just when you start a game turn the TV off and on again so it fits the screen correctly

That list made me realize how long it's been since I played Dino Crisis... I didn't know it was a game you couldn't force. I got my VGA Box while officially licensed game were still being pressed on GD-Roms in Japan (but after the final US/PAL releases).

Hi! Pound owner here, and my situation with it is...weird to say the least. The whole reason I got it (yes, price. Yes, convenience) was to record gameplay for my let's play series, and I use the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket (via Rerez's recommendation). The only time I have the screen issue mentioned toward the end is when I have the cable running through the Rocket. Turning the DC on first and TV second doesn't fix this, but if I have the cable running directly into the TV, the picture is fine. Just thought I'd throw this info out there.

I just got mine this week. I love it. I went from a pound cable, to a gekko/mcable set up for my DC. The difference is quite noticeable. I'm definitely a fan.

I’ve had a Dreamcast for a few years, and I’ve been using composite... on a 4K TV. UGH! Yeah, I just ordered this thing. Thank God it exists haha. Also, thanks for letting us know about all this Dreamcast stuff, Adam. I know I would never have found this myself.

Yess. I just ordered mine. THANK YOU! I was using one of the crappy cheap cables (not even a box) and combined with a VGA to HDMI converter, it was getting out of control. Now everything is going to be nice and neat behind my entertainment centre. I don't own any of the games that don't work or need to be forced, so I'm happy that I don't have to touch it once it's plugged in.

aaaaand your comment took me to this video! that's amazing! It baffles me how a console over 20 yrs old can still have so much life even after its maker gave up on it so quickly! I LOVE the dreamcast! It's up there with gamecube in the systems I love most. Reason being, on that generation, game quality was still so high! not a whole lot of dlc/bugs/p2win/loot boxes back in the day. Even the xbox offering the rare dlc (the extra halo maps) was still passable. Nowadays, it's rare to see a game dev pull off these things right. Anyways, great video!

HI Adam, I'm Riven Editor of Randomised Gaming, I'd like to point out your Dreamcast VGA list is incorrect for PAL users and you should state this in the list. Games such Skies of Arcadia, Kiss: Psycho Circus and Resident Evil - Code: Veronica all had the VGA support removed from the PAL release. In fact we cover the PAL release of RE:CV in a video we did and it added in ghosting due to the poor optimisation for 50Hz. So beware of this fact there are a number of NTSC games which support VGA normally or via forcing that will not work for the PAL version as it is removed or a bug prevents it from working.

Oh I know, it's based on NTSC primarily because that's what I have. I was only able to test PAL games I own, which frankly is just the exclusives.

I thought that this may have been the case being that I'm in Scotland and have previously tried to run Code: Veronica through VGA, with no success. Thanks for pointing this out and too the info of it's added ghosting due to it being displayed in only 50Hz.

The PAL release of Code: Veronica is an utter mess sadly, we should get round to comparing the two at some point as the Japanese complete version just plays so much better than the PAL release. I would send a link to our PAL video, but YT classes all links as spam these days.

Thats why I decided to import the US version of both RE:CV and Skies of Arcadia. The second game has the additional problem that crashes all the time due to the fact that it is very sensitive to the smallest scratch.

I bought a dirt cheap china-adapter 17$. It's called bitfunx... The 480p quality is great, no crushed colors, sharp pixel edges, no noise (except the dreamcasts own dither pattern, which is a part of the rendering), however. one thing I didn't know was that the dreamcast has a resolution of 720x480. However, in a lot of cases it is treated as a 640x480 PC-signal. What happens with this cheap adapter is that aspect ratio is to narrow, and the pixel grid isn't 1:1, which makes the dither pattern having subtle vertical lines (due to some pixels being interpolated). It's a shame. I love the size, quality and price of the adapter, if it only interpreted the signal correctly. xD I heard a lot of people complained about the akura. that the cable header becomes flimsy over time and you loose red or green or blue signals... This is the only reason why I am not throwing my money at it. They could have resolved this by having cable support between the connector and the "exit" route of the cable..... Hmmmm... Perhaps I will create it myself! 😅

Kenneth Mitchell you shouldnt need an upscaler unless your tv doesnt like the 480p signal or the signal from non vga games. I have a 4k samsung that ill use it for.

I'd personally rather see a mini Saturn first loaded with a bunch of classics, then a Dreamcast. Since Sega and Nintendo are pals these days, maybe just hire Nintendo to help Sega manufacture the mini consoles. Theirs seem to be really good.

I've been diving deep into my Dreamcast lately, and figured you had a video about this device since I found out about it on Reddit. Just placed my order. I've been using the Kaico for awhile and am quite tired of it. I have a Pound cable somewhere but I lost it lol. Hoping this will be a step up in quality for me.

I just got my Gekko in the mail yesterday and I love it. I went back to the BeharBros website to get a little more clarification on what the VGA/RGB switch does and it says the Gekko is discontinued. Bummer since it's a great product.

The POUND cable is fine. Its a tiny bit softer image wise (not much but you can see it if you compare side by side) and contrast is higher (which can be fixed on the TV itself) then a VGA box. But at the 30 dollar price point its fantastic. Some people said the sound was not as vibrant and strong on the pound cable. But it seems that depends on the cable some have had no issues?

For me, the Dreamcast looks incredible on a VGA CRT monitor, main advantage is being able to play light gun games. My favourite VGA box is the Toro. Great video again 😎 I'm also looking forward to when Garo is available.

@Adam, the issue you pointed out i also have with my standard VGA box and my Samsung B7000 series Led TV. I use the adjust setting in the picture option menu. This works like the calibration buttons on CRT monitors. You'll figure it out !!!!!!

My old vga/hdmi set up died. Unfortunately they've discontinued the Gekko so I got an Akura. Works great and is a bit more expensive, but worth it. I wonder why the Gekko was discontinued.

got a dreamcast yesterday in more or less mint condition with 2 controllers, 2 memory cards and the starter kit chu chu rocket/dreamkey 1.5 for 50 Euro with shipping...i guess that was a good deal:)

Also another question... I have a Samsung 4k 60" SUHD TV (its the S7000/8000 in the us), i have the following setup: Dreamcast -> Output to VGA (with Split Audio) -> Porta Video Converter (Upscaler that will do 720p or 1080p) VGA to HDMI -> HDMI 1.4 Cable -> TV. I have the upscaler to 1080p (and i can confirm the output on the tv 1080p 60hz or 720p 60hz. My question is... Is this Coverter/Upscaler any good? It have 5 starts on amazon (from where i purchased it). Or its better to let the upscaler of the TV do its magic to 4K? Also, i have purchased an OEM Marselle Cable that have the Marselle Chip on it (the one that do a light AA filter on the HDMI), this is not the Original more expensive cable but the other one that costs half of the price... Should i plug it on the converter with it outputting on 1080p, or should i put the converter to 720p, and let the cable recieve that signal and send it to the TV? The idea here is to have the very best quality of image from the dreamcast (that is deadfull with all the alaising going on...). Best Regards,

I haven't used that specific one so I really can't say. But if you have the MCable and this, you wouldn't need any of that.

Do not confuse upscaler with simple converter. Gekko takes Dreamcast VGA 480p signal and only converts it to 480p over HDMI. That means that the actual upscaling 480p to the native resolution of your TV, 4K of your case, is done by the TV itself. Unfortunately that often adds noticeable delay to the picture and distorts quality. One remedy to that problem is to set TV into "game" mode which should at least deal with the delay problem. If you really seek the best possible quality you have to consider standalone upscalers like Framemeister or OSSC.

Sorry, my mistake, I was referring to the confusing title of Adam's video - Gekko is not a HD product. It simply converts VGA signal to HDMI output without resolution change. So technically Gekko is SD as in standard definition, which is 480p.

Other fix for cut off picture problem is to unplug hdmi and plug it back in. Don't do it until you're ingame though because of you do that while it's showing the dreamcast logo you'll just have to do it again ingame

I know that Dreamcast is using a PowerVR PCX2 (The same that was used on the Videologic version for the PC (i got one of those on the time). The main advantage of the PowerVR arquitecture vs the 3DFX Voodoo (released on the same time), is that was possible to output in native 800x600 intead of 640x480. Since the output is digital, why is needed to convert the digital cable to analog (VGA), its not possible to convert the video signal to DVI for example? Then use a DVI to HDMI converter retaining the digital signal and not using VGA at all? Also, the resolution is possible to force a higher resolution on the console itself? Best Regards,

"Since the output is digital, why is needed to convert the digital cable to analog (VGA)" The output of the Akura/Gekko is digital, but the VGA output of the Dreamcast is not becaue it was intended to use with PC monitors at the time and although DVI was created in 1999, it doesnt mean that it already existed compatible equipment for it. "its not possible to convert the video signal to DVI for example? Then use a DVI to HDMI converter retaining the digital signal and not using VGA at all?" Technically it is, but it will not achieve any good difference and it will just make eveything needlessly complex, instead of using the progressive resolution the Dreamcast already outputs and although the resolution is small to today standards, the image clarity and color sharpness of the Dreamcast is very good. This method only would benefit something like the PS2, which most games run in interlaced resolutions and modern equipment can have issues with deinterlacing, and the fact that the PS2 video output is not very good, even with component cables. The PS2 have games that support higher resolutions, but the console had less VRAM and buffer to work with compared to GameCube, Xbox and even the Dreamcast, so to achieve this, many games simply compressed the color space and it looks horrid. Gran Turismo 4 is very blocky on 1080i, for example. Big resolution is good but it doesnt translate to a better image quality alone.

So from what i understand its not possible to output the console to 800x600 (maybe the PVR chip is a dumble down version of the PC chip on the Videologic 3dX?)? I remeber back in the day using the API for the PowerVR to do side by side comparisons on the 3dFX Voodoo (using Tomb Raider, Quake, etc..) and PowerVR did have the edge on precision and resolution... Even the Game Demo for the PowerVR the Kalisto´s Ultim@te Race, run amaizing on 800x600... Best Regards,

@@LordPaulusCobris Yes, these external boxes / cables all use the analog VGA output of the Dreamcast, then converts that to HDMI. Many of these boxes are the equivalent of taking a cheap "VGA to HDMI" adapter chip, and packaging it with the Dreamcast AV port connector. (albeit sometimes with a better chip, better PCB layout, and better quality cable.) I noticed that neither the Gekko nor the Pound cable will output the image with the correct aspect ratio, though. The Dreamcast (in "VGA mode") actually uses timings for 720x480, but it only renders within a 640x480 frame, and then border pixels are added on either side. Many of these latest "HDMI" cables still output the 480p timings (720 pixels per line), but the rendered image isn't as wide, hence many displays will slightly squish the image horizontally. The only HDMI mods I know of that handle this properly are my own original mod, and the open-source one by Chris and Dan (Citrus3000psi). Both are also true all-DIGITAL internal mods. ;) (unfortunately, all of the demo videos on my channel were captured before I added the 640x480 option, so those vids are also slightly squished. lol) The aspect ratio can often be corrected on external scalers when using those other cables / boxes, but few TVs will allow that fine an adjustment without delving into the service menus. AFAIK, the Dreamcast CAN actually output at 800x600, but not in any commercial games that I'm aware of... There is a 800x600 code example for KOS (KallistiOS), which is a development library for the DC. I guess nobody used it in games because the higher resolution would have taken a fair chunk more of the DC's VRAM for the framebuffer (and more, for double-buffering). That wouldn't have left a lot of the 8MB of VRAM for textures, and I'm not even sure if the PVR2 core is capable of correctly rendering polygons to the 800x600 buffer? (not to mention the probable slowdowns that might occur due to the extra workload.) It's something that could be tested quite easily, so I might try it some time.

Great Reply! The problem here is the Framebuffer size and not the horse power... the PCX2 in PC was capable of rendering 800x600 in several games (Tomb Raider, Ultimate Race, POD, Quake, etc). It was the only real advantage of the PowerVR chip over the Voodoo. When the Voodoo 2 came, it left the PowerVR chips behind in terms of performance with 8 or 12mb dedicated and full 800x600 power (1024x768 if used in SLI)... So i believe the same could be archived with the chip on the DC. Maybe the CPU was weaker then pentium mmx of the same era... Best Regards,

Very nice and detailed review. Good thing that you also mentioned the aspect ratio problem and how to solve it. As A European I am currently using my Dreamcast with RGB Scart over the Framemeister. And I am happy with the quality although it is just 480i. I am planning to enjoy my games in 480p too though. Was interested in the Akura for a long time but it was always a bit too expensive for me. The price of the Geko is pefect though. I think I will get one of these soon.

Kenneth Mitchell You certainly could play on a CRT and have it look nice. However, I would look for a different device (unless your CRT has HDMI) to use the VGA output. You probably wouldn't get a huge benefit in image quality from using a Framemeister or OSSC with this device on a HD TV. From all of my research, the Gekko functions and looks great out of the box.

I can confirm with the Akura the displayed image has an offset to the right side of the screen. If the game does not have a screen adjust option you are stuck with it. My second concern is the white noise I get every time a white or bright image is displayed. After contacting the seller I was told the problem is with the connector pins on the Dreamcast. I tried to fix it but so far I was not successfull.

Found another one not on the list, got Hydro Thunder white label NTSC (non greatest hits) and it doesn't show VGA box compatible. You forgot to list the first print of Mortal Kombat Gold again.. So which would those 2 fall under?? Also where can i find Code Breaker? (thanks in advance)

I use a 27 inch BenQ monitor. It has a display mode that allows you to show widescreen content at 19 inches 5:4. The image looks great through HDMI and it looks really close to the original 4:3 aspect ratio (but better in my opinion) without looking squished despite the borders. It can also display 4:3 natively but I've only seen it working at the original resolution so it's a 640 x 480 box in the middle of a 1080p screen. I've never figured out how to stretch it. I'm currently using a generic scart to hdmi converter (not the one he's shown before but a slightly better one). The image is pretty good but I've been looking to get a VGA box for my dreamcast for a while now.

Entropyms 001 also I have benq 24 inch monitor, and I just looked at my displays options and it shows a 17”(4x3) and a19”(4x3) options plus a few others. You saying it looks best selecting a 19inch option? I don’t have a Dreamcast, but if i was to get one later definitely want the best picture of a modern display. I tried a cheapy $60 upscaler with a rgb modded n64 and on a modern regular hdtv, it looked like crap so I sold it.

So I have two monitors. One is a 24 inch benq xl2420t which only shows 4:3 at the sizes you mentioned. The other is the 27inch benq rl2755hm which has the 5:4 option at 19 inches. If you can find it I'd recommend this scaler www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ABOB1NU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It works well for my Saturn and Megadrive though it still stretches the image to widescreen. It's better than the one Adam featured on his channel, it still has the softening effect when stuff moves but it's a lot better at handling the image. I also found a great and relatively cheap solution for component cables recently so my PS2 and Xbox now look amazing on my monitor. I'm getting Sega saturn component cables to test them out next (not the hd retrovision ones but the ones meant for professional monitors which are a lot cheaper). For N64, I'd recommend doing the scart to hdmi option and using a scanline generator like this www.ebay.co.uk/p/HDMI-SCANLINE-Generator-for-Retro-Games-Gamers-Mame-Arcades-Emulators/3010312240?iid=142596498787&chn=ps, if you're not happy with the image, it might help. Of course the best option is always the framemeister but when you factor that and the cables, everything gets more expensive.
