I believe that Mojang treats anything (outside of certain gamerules) which isn't default as a "cheat" or change to the game which would mean that it isn't legitimate. I can see why they'd do that in Bedrock Edition, since they would want achievements to reflect playing the game in the "Intended" way.

i almost liked your comment but that would be very demoralizing just like if athletes could start doing drugs so to conclude i agree with the current standards, keep inventory is a cheat because the core gameplay of minecraft is the fear of dying and losing your items, NOT dying and only fearing losing your coords also i believe that you are responsible for what you bring with your person when you go on a journey, if you want to live fast and avoid death you are rewarded with achievements, but you shouldnt complain when you live fast and die hard, because in a sandbox game you can create machines and build terrain in your favor, so blaming a mob or a fatal accident is not accepting the consequences of your actions knowing that you can balance gameplay side note im editing as i watch, and 4:00 through yes keep inv comes into play when you decide to engage god mode and break the whole concept of survival minecraft, for all we know waking up from dying is "cheating dying" but to me thats all the second chance i need, and to not have your spawnpoint set by loot is also being irresponsible 4:30 it took 30 seconds for him to cover what i said and for me to not agree because at that point you are worried about your coords and the punishment of dying is losing everything even in lava because im saying that if you want fire resistance you need to work and prepare, having your elytra break in the void is my biggest pet peeve because elytra shouldn't break that fast to barely survive the trip back, im still watching

Mojang changed the "Enable cheats" text to "Enable commands" in Java, and keepInventory is just a game rule, never labeled as a cheat, both of this things are precisely like that because Mojang wants people to play however it's more enjoyable for them without it being labeled as cheating. I think it's a difference in vision between the Bedrock and Java teams, hopefully the bedrock team takes it into consideration in the future! People who play in single player or private servers/worlds make their own rules and that's always okay :) games are to have fun. I personally mod the game to keep a balance between the two. I don't do keepInventory, but I add a mod that adds graves that expire in 30 minutes (instead of 5) and I can customize how much experience I get back (I usually set it at around 70-80%), it also helps prevent items burning in the case of an accident or being lost in the ceiling of water structures, butt that's just how I like to play my game c:

I think the word "cheats" communicates to new players that these are extras that aren't supposed to be a part of the normal gameplay but can be enabled as help. Maybe if they still called it commands but showed a pop up similar to what celeste does with it's assist mode
@Rikaisan
@Rikaisan 19 дней назад
@@rubylikessonic2 The issue is that saying "Cheats" means some player will try their best not to use anything in there, even if that means they will hurt their game experience. It also comes with a sense of shame: "ahh you have to cheat to play the game" kind of thing. That's why just showing them as gane rules or world rules would be so much better, it would present itself as letting the player personalize their experience instead of it being seen as something to be ashamed of.

First of all - this is a great video Second of all - nerd server owner rant on the subject incoming: Java does not have this issue, at all. Now thankfully only Bedrock (and it's related versions) are affected here, and while I fully respect the legacy console versions because I've played them myself and had so much fun exploring all the stock environments and such - I think it's important to remember that Bedrock, in it's entirety, is just bad. Nearly everything about Bedrock edition is just... inferior to Java, even the performance nowadays isn't worth it anymore and the only reason to play Bedrock Edition at all is if you have to because it's the only one available for your device. On Java Edition while you're making a world, you can just... tick the toggle, like any normal setting, and the game will not even try to punish you for it whatsoever. On older versions, you can just open a singleplayer world, disable cheats, but then > Open to LAN > Enable Cheats > change the gamerule > Return to menu > Return to the game it's never been an issue there either as I'm pretty sure most people know it works this way and the game won't punish you for keeping it on, and it's interesting to think that Mojang kept it this way in Java Edition My guess is that Mojang Redmond (AKA Microsoft, responsible for Bedrock Edition) have completely and entirely fallen out of touch with what the players want and more importantly what Minecraft actually should be... a Sandbox. Your game, your rules. Even the recent decision to remove crucial files that Bedrock Edition modders use to make mods proves this. Mojang Redmond, just like Microsoft, are trying a little too hard to control everything they own, and every single time they do it's building up to a big backfire, like the recent situation with people being unable to play Minecraft or access their Realms (which suck a lot by the way compared to real server hosting) for over 48 hours! I could really go on for hours about how Microsoft is just turning Minecraft into another terrible money printer with low quality content and their employees shoving their noses where they don't belong like private servers (it's why mine is cracked and I firewall all connections to Microsoft/Mojang services off the host machine, I have my own skin & login system to compensate) which in my opinion is a total joke and a glaring violation of privacy, not to mention their constant EULA changes that are borderline illegal because you cannot be changing a license agreement YEARS AFTER a purchase has been made. TL;DR - Bedrock is just bad, honestly, no matter how you look at it.

@Dolphin002 26 дней назад
Oh no Bedrock has a different achievement system from Java, that means it must be worse! The removal of mods is bad, but that alone doesn't make it inferior in every way. I'm a Java player btw. Not sure how they make low-quality content. The worst update recently was 1.17 and that was just because they had to delay the world generation update by a few months. How are they messing with private servers? Chat reporting may be a thing but the main concern I've seen from that is that there might be wrongful bans, but I haven't seen ANY reports of that happening yet. And that's a Java thing, not Bedrock.

I thought it was great, but as soon as I started PC gaming and started playing java I kinda realised how sloppy bedrock is. I mean, sure its minecraft and its enjoyable at times, but it just feels off, for me atleast. Keep Inventory: Keep Inventory in some way is actually a cheat. Commands take away the whole entire survival aspect as a whole, as you can get things from it. It's survival after all, so how does this relate to keep inventory? Well, When you die you don't lose your stuff, which is a cheat because losing your stuff is a punishment for dying, almost every other survival game makes you lose your stuff. Keep inventory gives you no reason to stay alive because there is no punishment for dying, it takes away from the survival aspect. You're supposed to lose your stuff, that's how it works. Peaceful Mode: You are "somewhat" safe when on peaceful but you can't have peaceful always on when it comes to beating the game, because It's impossible. You need blaze rods to proceed, however you can't get them without Blazes. I'd also like to point out, I've seen comments talking about the bonus chests and how they aren't a cheat so keep inventory shouldn't either. That statement is wrong because the bonus chest only benefits you in the beginning of the whole game aka a head start, Keep Inventory benefits you in the whole game instead of just being a head start.

Well made, but I heavily disagree. Returning to your spawn point isn't really that big of a punishment like you said imo, getting back to the level where you can find whichever resource you need is extremely easy, and if you have elytra getting literally anywhere is easy. Whenever I have keep inventory on I completely lose all fear of death, In fact I begin using it as a tool. Why travel back home when I can just kill myself? No more worrying about exploring too far from home, no more worrying about my pickaxe breaking while I'm at y-50, no more making sure that my pearls won't hit the side of an end island, no more being careful about how I land with my Elytra, no more worrying about getting lost, and I'm sure I can keep going. If I'm able to play the game with all worry removed and a free way to instantly get home whenever I want to then why should I earn achievements? I'm not even saying that the game isn't as fun, it isn't for me but games don't need lose conditions to be fun (animal crossing, any cozy game really). Also you bring up the comparison to peaceful which I actually agree with, I always thought the peaceful should be a cheat. If a creeper starts exploding behind you you should be punished for not paying attention to your surroundings not given a free ticket out. It also trivializes dying in say a bastion, where would be nearly impossible to get your items back if you don't prepare beforehand. It also trivializes XP. Sure you could find your items after you die but you went level 60 to level 7. That's what keeps me on my toes more than anything

Completely removing the punishment for death is cheating. Getting taken back to your spawn after dying is more of an exploitable convenience than a punishment. A massive part of the whole 'gameplay loop' is not dying. Peaceful mode may rid mobs and hunger, but you still have falls and lava to worry about. Keep inventory makes it so you have absolutely nothing to worry about, respawning at home is typically a 5 minute trip at the worst anyway.

I used to play with keep. But once I tried turning it off, it made me actually fear dying. So I had a reason to build walls, light up caves yadiyada. With keep, death is more like a way to TP back to spawn, rather than a punishment because you went to the nether with a stone sword. It encourages the player to get better and play smarter. You actually have to evaluate risk vs reward. I do consider it a cheat. The end gets way less scary knowing that you won't lose your items to the void. It also makes bosses and the warden riskless, as the only thing you're losing is a bit of armor durability.

I'll add on by saying that getting mad after losing your items is a you problem. Not a game design flaw. I find it fun trying to retrieve my items no matter how valuable they may be. It's a memorable and exhilarating experience. It's one of the reasons why we play survival rather than creative. I'm not gonna say "git gud" but I can't help but think that these people are actively ignoring one of the most important aspects to survival mode.

After getting ripped out of the core gameplay loop too many times, I just went “ugh, I don’t wanna do this anymore” and then switched to a creative mode world where I blew stuff up or something. To all of the commenters defending this design choice with “bUT IT MAKES THE GAME HARDER!1!”, you may have a point, but that doesn’t make it cohesive with the rest of the game’s design goals, or even fun to begin with. counterargument: you made a valid point comparing keep inventory to peaceful which made me wonder what the core difference between the 2 game rules are. I think the reason why keep inventory is a cheat and peaceful isn't* is because the fear of death is still present in peaceful. yes there are no mobs but that doesn't guarantee that you won't die and lose your stuff. you could fall in lava, fall, drown, or heck even cactus. all things that are made a lot less likely in peaceful but still possible. keep inventory takes away the fear of death entirely because there is no long term harm caused by death if you were to die playing keep inventory. I would also like to add that peaceful mode IS a cheat according to minecraft... technically. you see when playing peaceful, you are unable to get some achievements. monster hunter, zombie doctor, sky's the limit. the end can't be reached in peaceful mode so all end advancements aren't possible which includes the fastest form of horizontal travel in the game: the elytra. also because no mobs spawn you can't get wither skulls so no nether star and therefore no beacon. no challenge, but no advancing beyond a certain point. those would all be possible if keep inventory was not a cheat but there would be no long term punishment. lose to the wither with keep inventory, no problem run back and finish it. get lost in the end, dig down and respawn with all your riches. these are problems that don't exist with keep inventory and therefore have no real challenge. keep inventory also encourages greed because there is no potential punishment for staying in the cave a little longer. to remove all punishment would not make you deserving of the achievements. to earn all the achievements, you must face the challenges laid out before you by the creators of the game. what good is a reward if long term failure isn't possible. this is why I think keep inventory should remain a cheat. thank you for you time and thank you for a good debate. I really enjoyed this.

You still don’t want to lose a location when playing with keep inventory on, though. There might be some stuff there that you won’t be able to come back and get because it’s too far away or too hard to reach. Plus, after a certain point, you’ll have enough resources to replace your gear immediately no matter if you have KI on or off. This is also why I don’t think durability is a bad mechanic (IN MINECRAFT ONLY) because you can make new equipment.

Peaceful mode is for map-making. It isn't a cheat because you can't beat the game in that difficulty (unless you cheat and use a 12 eye portal seed) because blazes don't spawn. However I do believe that it should disable achievements, and I'm more concerned that certain texture packs turn off achievements. Keep inventory is a cheat because it removes the survival aspect of the game. If you die in lava you get all your crap. back like nothing happened, and going back to spawn isn't enough because a thing called moving beds or respawn anchors exists

I personally agree with this video. Ever since I started playing Xbox 360 Minecraft back in 2012, I always had keep Inventory on as a way to not lose my stuff. And ever since then, I have always had it on. I know some people might call it cheating, but this is Minecraft. You can't dictate what is cheating and what is not. Afterall, it's a sandbox. Plus the only game that also has this same mechanic (like keep inventory) that isn't Minecraft, is Terraria. It's just that you lose your money on death and not your items that you have gathered so far. Edit: Also in Minecraft Java snap shot, I think Mojang reenable the label "Cheats", as "Commands". Because there is no way you can't ever cheat in a sandbox game.
@SunriseMaster

Great video but I personally disagree. I think that Mojang should reconsider the ability to switch game modes while you’re still inside of the game to stop people from randomly switching to peaceful mode when they’re being bombarded by mobs on low health. I don’t think the difficulty of peaceful mode within itself is a cheat, but I do believe the ability to switch to it whenever you feel like it possibly could be. I have a firm stance that keep inventory is a cheat because whenever you want to leave or get out of a situation, you can just kill yourself and go back to your house / spawn without any repercussions. Having keep inventory enabled, almost encourages the player to kill themselves whenever they want to go back to their base which isn’t what mojang intended for people to do when playing the game. (hence why it’s a cheat) I think a good middle ground option that isn’t as lenient as keep inventory, but also isn’t as harsh as vanilla is the Gravestone Mod (add-on if you’re on bedrock). This add still makes the player lose their items upon death, but once you respawn you are given a map that acts as a recovery compass, leading the player back to where they died. On top of this all of your items will be stored inside of a gravestone at the site of your death that you can retrieve once you use your map to get there.

They should add a system where if you die a container spawns where you died and carries all your stuff and wont despawn to vanilla game not disabling achievements 4. How is peaceful mode not a cheat but keep inventory is? 😭

Being a less impactful cheat than other cheats doesn't make it not a cheat. Improving the gameplay experience doesn't make it not a cheat, it just means the game design is poorly done in that regard. Peaceful difficulty being more impactful doesn't mean keep inventory shouldn't be clasified as a cheat, it just means peaceful should.

I agree that calling keep inventory a "cheat" might miss the mark a bit, but I dont think that the consequence of not being able to earn achievements is unjustified. A lot of the late game activities, notably any tasks in the nether or the end before you have late game armor, tools, and weapons, pose significant threat to not just yourself, but to much of the progress you've made so far with keep inventory off, especially since some of the biggest threats in these dimensions arent just the mobs, but the ways to lose everything in one fell swoop, in just one tiny error, the massive lava lakes and the void. Without the risk of loss of items, there is not much keeping a player from just mindlessly throwing themselves at a task until it is done (except for maybe the time it takes to run back to where they were). And to be clear, I have spent plenty of time playing with keep inventory on (even if nowadays I prefer to play without it), and I know it can still be a slight struggle even with the gamerule on. Im not a hater of keep inventory players, or anything. I just think that with no real risk involved, a minecraft achievement isnt exactly much of an achievement at all if it can just be grinded out, and requires less or even no real skill, only a bit of patience. TLDR - I dont think keepinventory is cheating, and I dont think theres anything wrong with it. I just think many late-game achievements arent earned if you dont need to approach them with caution and planning, and can instead just attempt them over and over until you get lucky. BTW, I think this is a very well made video, and you have definitely convinced me that keep inventory is not something to be shy of enabling, and you have DEFINITELY convinced me that peaceful should be a cheat. But I think you missed the mark of what you started this video about, which was the advancements/achievements. you really only talked about why keep inventory isnt cheating, but havent made an argument as to why you should be able to earn achievements with keep inventory on, aside from claiming that if peaceful allows achievements, then so should keep inventory, to which I agree that peaceful is an issue here and would suggest disabling achievements for peaceful mode, not enabling them for keep inventory. well sorry for the essay anyways. Hope your day is well, and that you are still having fun in minecraft.

so many keep inventory haters in the comments, saying it "removes the consequences of death" as though its a bad thing. If the only consequence for dying is respawning at your bed, then it makes world exploration easier and safer as you dont have to worry about going back to where you were to pick up your items, instead you can think "That area has hostile mobs or a large drop I didn't see in the dark , ill avoid it until they despawn or I have better gear"

Although I kinda wish that there was an option to have a grave-like system when playing without keep inventory. A friend of mine hosted a Minecraft survival server, and he setup a grave plugin. And it was nice not having to worry about items despawning. If this were ever to be a vanilla feature, then it should also be a game rule.

To each their own. I only play hardcore in every game including Minecraft but who gives a fuck how someone else wants to play the game. if the game considers it a cheat then it is. I would personally consider keep inventory to be a cheat for the same reason you consider flying around a cheat. It fundamentally removes a key aspect of the experience. Removing the need to care about death or your decisions because it could lead to resource loss in my mind is the same as how flying around removes the need for exploration.

I don’t agree with the premise that the death run is not apart of the core Minecraft game loop. I do however think that any feature being a core Minecraft experience doesn’t mean you have to do it in your sandbox game where you can mod the game to be anything you damn well want. Which is exactly why in actual Minecraft the “cheats” were renamed. Because there is no cheating in your sandbox game as long as you agree upon what’s fair in your multiplayer worlds. Glad I don’t play Bedrock for this and many other reasons.

Very interesting dialectical discourse; however, if thy person permits the undersigned, I'd like to contemplate your argumentation: While I agree that "Keep Inventory" is hardly considerable a cheat compared to using commands, I'd like to remind you that a "cheat" is objectively known as mean to ease the difficulty of a challenge with no concrete drawbacks. For instance, the act of grinding in Role Playing Games is definitely a common and rather annoying part of the experience, and (as I compare it to what thee said) it breaks the circle of the game play. However, grinding is also a way to prevent the player from being instantly ready to face a foe that has not yet earned the necessary needed to defeat it, therefore avoiding the experience to be fast and less memorable. "Keep Inventory" somewhat fills such gap, making the player less distracted and more focused on the game in fear of losing the goods. Just being forced to go back to the "spawnpoint" doesn't act like an actual punishment, as you can technically just have the spawnpoint set very close to your death since beds do not require night anymore to set it. Also, while removing the need to retrieve your lost items doesn't technically impact the game play cycle, neither do achievements (if you don't count the small amount of experience you get when obtaining them), making your statements feel more like a lament of not being able to "having cake and eating it too". Despite your rather "lacking" argumentation, the undersigned has to agree on the OUTRAGEOUS hypocrisy of letting the player change difficulty with a simple setting swap. That's something that the undersigned always found silly and illogical considering that the game is labelled as a SURVIVAL-SANDBOX game. In conclusion the undersigned believes, still, that "Keep Inventory" should remain a labelled as "cheat" (even in the Java version, as it's currently NOT considered as such) and Mojang should instead make the difficulty of the game unchangeable to prevent cheap means of avoiding punishment. or they can do whatever the fuck they want is not like a give too much of a shit tbh minceraft is piss easy anyway

Like when is your spawn point ever not your main base. I don't think Peaceful is considered a cheat because of both you can't really do much in it anyway, sure the ender dragon spawns but you're not getting eyes of ender for portal cause blaze power is impossible to obtain and you aren't able to get eyes from anywhere else (least in current Minecraft.) and it's probably a remnent of Legacy console where you couldn't change the difficulty without exiting if host privileges aren't enabled (I think, I might be remembering incorrectly.) Honestly I think it'd just be better if something like the gravestones addon existed in base game, risk of losing items just without risk of permanently losing them

Like if you go exploring and die, oh well, I guess your home now. or if you need to get home, or fill your hunger,, then dying will fix that. Dying IS supposed to take you out of the gameplay loop as a punishment for losing a fight, or not being careful and falling etc. I think as soon as the game is beatable in peaceful it should be considered a cheat too

Its not like every game rule (at least in java) makes things easier, you can do some wacky things like making water not create source blocks, or disable health regeneration, but those actively make the game harder, so is that "cheating"?
