Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

For me, I finally learned that is better to fail trying, than not try it at all. For a very long time I was afraid of uploading any of my acting on my RU-vid channel. But, this pass year I shot my own short, that I wrote and performed and that film got me a feature role on a film that deals with the same conflict as my does, guilt and substance abuse. I realized that my fear was my worst enemy and I had to overcome NOW!! Thanks, Josh, I agree with you, "being authentic enough" and showing the pain, the bad, the ugly of once self, through our characters, is key in connecting with your audience. Keep shining, brother.

EXACTLY what I discovered this year. It wasn't until I produced my own work that I realized, "Why the heck am I waiting for other people to purchase my script or validate me?"

Yes, and it was after I read a tweet. I realized that no one is going to help me, I have to help myself, so I promised myself to work hard and make a feature by 2021.

Go for it. Nothing is impossible if you put your mind and soul on it, and have friends you can depend on to help you. I made a short I always wanted to make, and if you read my message on the comments, you will see, that even if not perfect, the story I wanted to tell, I told it. I called it, "Redemption" and is in my RU-vid channel. Good luck, brother.

You know what... I love this guy so much, it's the only channel where I actually watch the videos from start to finish without wandering off to the next thing in the middle of the video. I just bought a Sony a7III lately after 2 years with an old Canon 5D MK2, it feels right... we'll see. Thanks Josh, keep up the good work, what you do is really special... Much love from Israel.

I congratulate this guy for breaking through to find what is right for him and his interview inspires me. I really identify with his journey. I would add though , (being a little older than him) that although it may seem like perhaps a waste of energy or time, as you get older and reflect you realize that all those auditions, meetings and rejections not to mention classes were teaching you the skills and giving you the muscle memory to make your art to be much more professional and powerful. So I would say the ideal is some kind of hybrid of both lives.

I was spending too much time waiting, dreaming. Dreaming is good, but if you don't pursue your dream with actions, by taking control, then you really don't want it really bad. Now days is so much easier to show your work in film, all you need is a smartphone, a story w/a beginning, middle, end, a good friend or two, and if you are a an actor/writer, you have a film, a calling card!!

I’ve been telling myself I’m gonna direct a feature or at least a short for the past 7 years but I’ve come up with every excuse not to from sound quality, video quality, finances, location, timing, personal life etc & had I started back then I’d be on my 3rd film by now maybe even Hollywood who knows! Smh

Thank you for posting Jayful Filmz. We imagine that isn't an easy thing to admit. Hopefully this is part of a change coming in your life. You don't need to chase perfection on your first short film. You are putting far too much pressure on yourself. Start now with whatever you have. Going through the filmmaking process however you can is what matters most. Even if it is getting a couple friends together and filming one scene. It could even be a rehearsal. If you are worried about sound, then think of a two minute story you can tell with no dialogue. Embrace your limitations and use your creativity. Filmmakers are some of the most resourceful people on the planet. Focus on what you do have, not on what you are lacking. No reason you cannot film something and have it finished by the end of this year. Hope you accept this challenge.

I went thru a quite similar journey - just finished my own 3rd feature - but despite viewership in the millions, positive feedback and a number of fest awards - reaching any kind of "commercial success" or actually making back even just part of the budgets is still largely an impossible fantasy. Im all for taking a project into my own hands instead of eternally waiting for the right circumstances - but as fullfiling and liberating it may feel at first - financially its a step down, not up...

Hi, Ive been following my passion for acting and its been 5 years. Ive had only a few formal training but have been involved in theatre, short film and music video productions extensively. However, the film industry in my country, Nepal, is very small and hardly recognised by the rest of the world. So, it has got me thinking whether if I should try to fly over to a city such as Los Angeles on a student visa and try my chances where my craft could probably be better recognised, or should I stay here, back in my country and continue to stay rooted where I started?

I've shared my story here on F.C. before, and I've shared my scars as well. My very first spec is titled, "Shared Scars." I have been writing since very young, and acting since 1982, on and off, but this pass year I decided to film my very first short, which I wrote/directed/edited and performed. It's not perfect, but is a story, it's acting, it's film, and a labor of art. Fear is debilitating for any artist. You conquer your fear of failing and things start to happen. This passed year I worked a lot as b.g actor in two huge, upcoming feature films and one of them gave qualify me for SAG, which I am now. It was the fact that I lost all fear when things started happening!! Hope this helps someone. My Short film "Redemption" is up in my RU-vid channel CAPRI Films. Hope you check it, not perfect, but still proud of it. Always a fan F.C. Josh, great advice, sir. You have a new fan in me.

Nope! I was lucky to learn, early on, self producing was a way to give yourself what you deserve and to showcase your talent. Not to mention, it challenges you and makes you think outside the box on how to get what you want. I may work off of "no budgets" and be judged by others on productions value (i.e. I don't have access to Red cameras and amazing sets), but I am always working and creating. Never waiting.

I want to make this film but there is no trust in me. I believe I can do it but the trouble with film that is different from other art is that it is not something you can do on your own. If you want to paint then paint. If you want to make a film you need actors. For is particular film I am making I don’t need a lot but the people I have are never free. They don’t participate and so many more factors are going against me. So I tried to think of it as a positive, I thought “this is an instance of creative restraint.” So I consider it but it as a creative restraint but it alters my film so drastically. No two actors of mine are free at the same time so I considered doing split screen. My film has dialogue, not a lot, just enough to service the film but my actors don’t even try to deliver it. Everyone is complaining I’m trying my hardest to make it easier. I give them compensation but I don’t get any decent work in return. The deadline for this project is in less than a week and I feel like I will come up with a product that is drastically far from what I had planned for so long and when my teacher sees it he will mock it and tell me I don’t have what it takes to be a filmmaker. When that happens I would like to believe that I was just unlucky but the comment would overpower that and I will truly believe I can’t do it. But why can others do it? Why can’t I do it?
