Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

One of the best lectures on writing books I heard, the speaker stressed "You can't go home with your book." If you have to explain ANYTHING to a reader, it is your fault not your reader's. Information deliberately delayed for effect is OK, but omitted is not. This sounds like the screenplay version of the same important advice.

The version of that expression I always heard was "Are you going to go to every member of the audience and explain that?"

Thanks Matthew. In all we think our interview with Corey is about 3 hours long. It's excellent from start to finish. Think we have almost 2 hours left. We're excited to publish more in the coming weeks.

I am not a scriptwriter, nor a published author. I write short stories and vignettes for my own entertainment and hope to one day have something that is good enough to publish. I had not heard of this technique, but it makes very good sense to me - ask "am I communicating everything I need to so the story stands on its own?". I believe strongly that many of the complaints by audiences of films could be eliminated or greatly reduced by this type of testing. Having an overall arc or theme for the story, especially when dealing with franchise films, makes a huge impact in how the details would be shaped in each of the stories within threads. Creating the details that remove all questions from the audience's minds (or at least most - sometimes that lack of knowledge can be used as a plot device or setup) makes for a much more entertaining piece.

I think the biggest challenge isn't even whether people do the testing; but whether they actually listen and properly interpret the results.

I think segment goes well with Paul Joseph Gulino's feedback and book "The Science of Screenwriting: The Neuroscience Behind Storytelling Strategies". Why people feel what they feel when viewing a visual artwork, which my be a tangent of what Cory Mandell is stating here.

If I write a story, I am only telling a part of the story. My readers also contribute the to story. If I describe the butchering of a sheep, Senior Daughter will be pretty much unemotional about it. Other readers might be quite upset. I know her reaction, at around age 8-10, she watched my father do exactly that, throat cutting, ripping open the belly, the whole deal. She subsequently read Amazing Voyage and Amazing Voyage II (Asimov), she was studied the human body in high school and subsequently in university. I would expect very different responses from groups of seven different readers, and If the story is depressing some readers will feel that.

I sent out a script to my cast to look it over. They loved it. Not a single one noticed I failed to introduce the villain until the very end where he gets nabbed walking across a parking lot. So work with other script writers when possible or with other authors. (Though the arguments I got into with a novelist were rather interesting as we read each other's works).

I've experienced a similar thing when asked to critique scripts. I start out by saying the deal is that I'll only do it as long as you agree not to take anything that I say personally -- let's remember that it's a business. Those who are mature enough to accept that 'notes' are a given are well on the way to becoming professional writers. And bear in mind that notes are just the beginning. After the sale, when you no longer own the work, a partial or even total rewrite of your script by another writer is not unusual either.
@SpockvsEgon
@SpockvsEgon 4 года назад
Where the hell are you finding seven people to read your scripts AND give feedback? I have one guy who gives me lots of feedback, two guys who give me a tiny bit of feedback, and a lot of people who don't want to hurt my feelings and just say, "It's fine." And I can't talk people into giving me feedback on my story, how is someone else going to persuade people to read my story?

@MAtthew Spaonar -- yup, and he has an ENTIRE video describing how BIZARRE, complicated, elongated, and transformative to the original script/idea that entire thing was. It's... pretty bananas. In the sense that he started with "an apple", and after all the input, studios, buy outs and failures, re-starting and more... they came out with "an old muddy shoe". Basically. I summed it up, but... watch his video on it. It's a DOOZY. Long. But... lots to explain, clearly.

Hi Yolanda, Corey isn't saying you need 7 friends for this level of feedback. You don't need any friends. You just need to know 1 person who knows 7 people. We think this is actually more about people you don't know than ones you do.

While he was the primary credited screenwriter, he wasn't responsible for the disaster that film became. Screenwriters usually don't have control over what happens to the scripts after they are handed over to the studio or whatever.
