Sang this in middle school about 6 years ago. This song still goes hard.

Fun fact- This song was created during the 1800s when slaverey was still legal. So basically, the slaves made songs that are like codes. For this, it says “keep your lamps trimmed and burning” which means, “don’t give up, we still have yet to escape”. Another lyric in this song says “soon I will be done with the trouble” the trouble being, slaverey. Lol my choir teacher taught me all of this.

Fascinating! Victor Johnson always delivers. This piece would be difficult for many groups as the harmony is so entwined, the dynamics change quickly & the accompaniment can easily throw parts off. The chorale deserves kudos as every word is clear & their rhythm is spot-on despite the rapid pace of the song. Ditto the pianist...lot of hours went into practicing this piece & it was clearly worth it!
