Something a little different for this cover of an old gospel blues - Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning - recorded, mixed and mastered in my home studio space, Guffland Studios. Most of it has been recorded in the tiled bathroom, using just an SE DynaCaster DCM8 dynamic microphone. Normally, I'd look for a space with significantly lower room sound for recording, but I wanted to experiment with the natural reverb the tiles, window and large mirror in an essentially cube-shaped room, bring to the mix. The DynaCaster is not really the right mic either, but it has an inbuilt pop-filter and increased directionality, which helped focus on the recording target a little.
In the bathroom, I recorded a Martin Backpacker guitar (which has almost no bottom-end boominess), a Gretsch Resonator and a Peavey Ukelele, various shakers and multiple rounds of hand claps. The vocals were recorded in my main room, with a Neuman TLM103, and the kick is from the Garage Sale Kit sample pack I made, which is available free on the Pianobook site.
The DynaCaster input was recorded through a Neve 1073 Unison preamp and I have added no reverb to the final mix - other than delay on the vocal, the only room sound is from the bathroom. I think it worked quite well! :-)
