Your tribute to JP brought tears to my heart. He was my mentor in song and life. I met him in Chicago. It’s quite a tale to tell

Thanks man. I just discovered John last year. Love his songs. The first one I stumbled upon was Sam Stone. John was older in the video but I could tell it was awhile back. Im thinking like 05 maybe. I served in Afghanistan and Iraq and that song hit me hard. Love his style and sense of humor. Thanks again. I've been playing chords for a couple of years but I want to learn this picking method. You do a great job explaining things.

Good lesson. I love John Prine and Hello in There. You are so right about the clarity of his note strikes. Yours are real good too!

Thank you, Thank you, THANKS SO MUCH, I spent my 80's& 90's a southern rock bass player, songwriter. Not a formally trained guitar player, i struggled trying to find a good picking style. Johns style gives me, and i'm sure many like me hope to write a better song. I am sure john smiles down on that. Thank you for making it so easy to follow along. Thanks so much for lifting John Prine up to help others like Me to learn a better way. God bless

JMK's one neat guy! Takes only about three seconds to figure that out. Perhaps even less? If you ain't old like me. He's just allowed a couple of folks in Washington State, to have a little happier Christmas. They always enjoyed my singing, now they can enjoy my playing, too. Thanks JMK.

Your comments about John Prine are so true. He's much greater than the sum of his parts. 👍

Hey Guy. Best video on the John Prine style out there. Hello. LOL I'm 79, was a commercial radio C&W DJ for years in Southern California, and had never heard of John Prine. Have now. Love his stuff. Thanks to you I'll have it down before this Christmas so I can send what's left of my family some Christmas audio/video Cheer. Yeah, I can still sing, too. God knows why. Take care, man. And thanks again.

Ron, stick with it and you'll find you've learned a really versatile way of backing your vocals! JMK

@@48king24 I will guy. I could always sing pretty well, but all of my bands, (had several) always asked me to please not try to play my guitar along with them. Yep. I was/am that bad. That be a changing now. Finally. And thanks a lot of that to you. Here's wish'n y'all a great Christmas from East TN. Unless of course, you have other plans? I'll send you a video via Utube, when the time is right. Ain't there yet. Dang!

Thanks for the John Prine finger picking style video. I only have my index finger and thumb on my picking hand to pick with so i have no choice but to play with one finger. Many guitarists here on RU-vid say they are teaching John Prine's style but they always use 2 (3) fingers plus the thumb. I find that very annoying bcuz that's not how Prine played and it is so hard to find people teaching one finger picking. I know that Etta Baker and Merle Travis used only their thumb and index finger for playing. I wish I could find someone online who actually teaches playing guitar using only the thumb and index finger!

Doc Watson also was a thumb n index guy when he wasn't flatpickin'. 'Doc's guitar", and" Deep River blues" are two great examples of his finger style playing. Lightnin Hopkins is another one.... then there's Gary Davis!!! in fact you'd be amazed how many of the old school guys were Thumb n index players. It's a much grittier way to approach the instrument. I learned a lot from Ernie Hawkins. He has several really good videos where he teaches or performs. It's mostly high level intermediate or advanced. I need to get off my butt and make some new videos. Got any suggestions?

Hi, thanks for replying! I am really a beginner at index finger picking. I checked out Ernie Hawkins but it’s mostly too advanced for me. I have tried to learn Sugar Babe and I think I can learn it with some more effort. I have listened to a lot of Doc Watson and always thought he was using two or three fingers! I have two or three Lightnin Hopkins LPs and was aware he was using just his index finger and thumb but I’ve never tried to learn any of his songs. I know of Reverend Gary Davis but I’ve never heard him play. I like Mississippi John Hurt and have a CD of his. I think his playing would be accessible to me. And of course there’s John Prine. I love his songs and his guitar playing. Again I think I could learn some of his songs. So if you’re looking for ideas for new videos, I would love to see more John Prine and also John Hurt. Thanks again for replying to my comment. It is much appreciated. Gordon

Thank you, sir, most instructive! I really enjoyed how you managed to explain the essential nut and bolts here, in the true spirit of keepin' it simple. I doubt John could have explained it any better, bless him! Bless you! Take care! May 2021

Hello music friend. I discover this great artist only 3 years ago....;when he died. I must say that Mister Prine was not so well known here in Europe. On april 7th ( in 2 days) I will do for the first time one of his song, as a tribute. I can only agree with what you say about his guitar playing: simple, but each note fits with the song and is just here to support the lyrics he wants to share. I feel this must have been a beautiful and kind person. May he rest in peace.....and I hope he can do all he planned....'when He goes to Heaven'. I thank you for sharing his guitar's playing style. Great video: well done. Like 316. Greetings from France.

Oh, Zsolt, I know you are a fan of him. I will soon share the song ' Long Monday'. I now don't have so much time, so I don't often make RU-vid music video ( maybe one every 6 weeks). Take care Joseph
