A Davis County family believes their luggage was stolen right off the airport carousel, and they're hoping to warn others to be prepared. Read more: ksltv.com/658303/keeping-lugg...
Decades ago many airports used to provide luggage checkers in the carousel area, whose job it was to check the tags on luggage against the luggage receipt stubs carried by the travelers. No one could exit the area carrying luggage without going through this relatively quick check. That process helped prevent theft of luggage from the carousel. It’s time to reinstate that system.
Missing part of the point. The man whose luggage was stolen had been forced to check his carryon bag. He wasn’t expecting to have to relinquish that bag to the check in process, consequently losing control over items he expected to have with him in the cabin. Even so, his bag happened to be uniquely marked and distinctive in appearance. It was easy to spot. Yet the bag did not make an appearance on the carousel. Either the bag was stolen by airport or airline personnel, or it was pulled from the carousel by a thief before the owner was in a position to spot it. Luggage isn’t always “lost” because it’s not easily distinguishable from other pieces of luggage. Sometime it’s just plain stolen.
@@kepckatherinec805 I never check bags, and I only use a small backpack that will fit under the seat. It astounds me how much carry ons are allowed and how big they are. No wonder they run out of space. I recently flew to Vegas and people literally had 3 carry ons each. One roller suitcase, a backpack and a purse. Most also had bags of stuff they bought in the airport.
By now, Air ports should install a security check in to the entrance of the baggage areas. You must scan your checked luggage bar code to be able to get in to claim your luggage. Only boarding pass is not allowed. This way, it will minimize the theft stealing the luggage. America is a freed country but not very safe anymore.
You know I remember back in the 80s you could not take your luggage out of the baggage claim area without security checking your ticket stubs for luggage and checking the tags on your luggage to be sure it was yours. Nowadays flying costs minimum of 10 times more than it used to in the 80s and there's no security
It usually takes 10-15 minutes to deboard the plane, then the gates are a 20-minute walk away from the carousel, so it's a joke for the police to say, "Get here right away." Security needs to do better.
Put ribbons, stickers, something to identify your bag - that’s the stupidest thing they can say considering there are so much documentation and news that TSA and airport staff are the one stealing the luggage.
Nothing new here-happened to me 30 years ago in Honolulu, except I saw my luggage and the thief headed to the door and ran over and got my bag. The thief, a local, quickly left the airport property.
This would be easy to resolve by cordoning off the area to at the very least, the paying returning passengers. And then have ticket scanners if that doesn't work. It would be cheap to section that area off from the public (non screened) access. But SLC Airports will do a feasibility study costing millions, and then they will roll out the plan which requires a remodel costing hundreds of millions and then in 20 years we might get a sectioned off area for baggage.
It puzzles me why SFO international arrivals have it closed off, but if you're domestic anyone can get in and take it. There should be something similar to Costco's exit procedure where they check your luggage tag against your ID before you can leave. Sure, it sucks by adding more time on your exit from the airport but at least you bag doesn't get stolen.
With all the surveillance around us, I would imagine that they could review the "tape" and make an identification of the thief, especially in this case with such distinctive baggage.
The way checked luggage is handled is akin to leaving it on the side walk hoping no one steals it. There is zero security and anyone can walk into the carrousel area to take what they want.
There use to be claim tag checkers to verify that it is your bags before leaving, Airport did away with them... Bring them back.. Put a tracking tag on all your bags..
This is B.S. The gentlemen had already had his valuables in his carry-on but the airline forced him to gate check it. America has failed! Each seat should be guaranteed a space for one check-in bag. These reason this fails is because others are selfish and bring on oversized non-compliant bags.
1:36 put ribbon stickers to make your bag standout so thieves can steal them before you get to the carrousel. This guy wins idiot savant award of the year 🏆
This has GOT TO CHANGE! It is NOT okay for anyone to come up to the carousel and grab anything they want and leave with it. There's got to be a claim check system.
Someday people will learn to pack lighter. I went to Europe with a travel backpack for one week. The family of four checking in next to me literally had seven suitcases never mind their carry-ons. What in the world are they bringing?
The airline has NO way nor interest in tracking passenger luggage. For the last 40+ years every time they were tested on determining the location or even the existence of luggage, they have consistently failed. Look at all the cases where passengers ask "where's my bag" and they get different answers for each call made to the airline, even when asking at the desks AT the airport. Put trackers in these bags.
Short of a clerk matching baggage tags to customer tags, i don't know what they can do. That would slow things down 1000% . And the howling from customers would be heard on the space station
Just have people scan their luggage before they leave! We have a code and everything! Now I don't want to land in the States if I have a transfer.😓 How can you trust the airports if they are acting like they don't care. Even if it's not checked luggage. My family has gotten their luggages lost and stolen IN the airports. 😣
Not going learn a traveling tip from a guy in utah we had pretty similar luggage and i grab thinking it was mine he showed probably thought inqas doing this 😂😂 then he showed a picture of his ever sence that the last thing i do in the airport is take a picture of it
