-----------
Welcome to MASpets! A channel dedicated to providing high quality information about exotic, alternative, and unique pets, as well as traditional ones. This channel supports the freedom of pet owners to care for the species of their choice as long as that animal has been shown to thrive in human care under the right conditions. We strongly believe that facts and education, not admonition, is the best policy for encouraging potential pet keepers to choose the best pet for their living situation. We believe there is no such thing as a ‘good pet’, and do not promote any particular species as pets, however we understand that the desire of some to own something different is essential to their expression and existence as an individual. Whether you are considering a pet, or are just interested in the subject, this channel invites you to become informed about the exciting world of animal diversity.
There are hundreds of species of exotic pets! Some examples include: fennec fox, porcupine, serval, wallaby, boa constrictor, rainbow crab, bush baby, zebra, squirrels, ostrich, kinkajou, macaws, springhare, lemur, leopard gecko, tarantula, capybara, sloth, owl, cockatoo, muntjac deer, lion, short-tailed opossum, raccoon, scorpion, green iguana, and more.
Domesticated exotic pets include domestic rats, hamster, gerbil, goldfish, guinea fowl, Bengal cat, peacock, fainting goats, and sugar gliders.
We post introductory videos to animals that can be kept as pets, care tips, address controversies, legal issues, and more. Please see the posted links for more information about this subject!

It's funny, I have found and even played with oregon Ermine... I should say they found me and played with me. I was fishing on the Columbia River next to the roots of a tree and this little white head pokes out and stares at me surprising me for a little bit. I treated it like a cat and clicked at it while rubbing my fingers trying to lure it over to pet it and when it actually came and started playing with mw I was even more surprised when a secound one came out and started to play to and after about 30 minutes of play they left. Imagine my surprise when I came back couple of months later to the same spot and a brown head pokes out and comes running up to me and then another shortly after. I played with the again putting 2 and 2 together and just like the first time they leave when they were done playing. Haven't been back there in several years so I am sure they are gone but it was certainly a very unique memory.

I keep the larger domesticated version in my home... Ferrets. If you like weasels and want one as a pet, just adopt a couple of Ferrets or more (never get just one, they are incredibly social and need others of their kind to thrive mentally).
@chewyjello1

It's hard enough to keep ferrets from getting bored...I can't image how hard it would be for stoat! It would take a very special person to give one the quality of life it deserves. Ferrets are definitely the better option. Just wish Marshall's wasn't the only option for some people (in the U.S.)
@michaelchambers7770
@michaelchambers7770 3 года назад
Good news for you if you are State-side, there are a LOT of good ferret breeders in the US. Marshall’s, and other large ‘mill’ breeding farms are not the only option. Unfortunately they are just the most common/accessible. If you’re interested look into local clubs, shelters and shows. The ferret community is a small but solid one. Likely, you can even work out transport if there are no breeders in your immediate area. Personally I am a huge fan of adopting from shelters(yes, these will be Marshall’s/mill bred 98% of the time). And responsible private breed(love you, shelter-fluffs, but we all know your health is unlikely) ferrets. I usually try to keep both.
@michaelchambers7770
@michaelchambers7770 3 года назад
Hey, Mithrennon of Aegwynn, a single ferret can be absolutely fine IF you are able to provide adequate socialization time yourself, and it is not one that has an established pair-bond. Sometimes a single ferret is the best, as in having an intact hob in rut(oh man, the stink!!!). They can become extremely aggressive(so can the ladies, honestly). The times you have potential for trouble is when you don’t have enough time, or when one of a pair bond perishes. Which absolutely can lead to devastating situations and risks for the surviving ferret. The general rule is either keep a single ferret, or three(or more!). Two is a little harder as you will eventually have to face the situation of a ferret missing their cage mate. Over the years I’ve had all combinations of scenarios. Including a brother-sister pair that spent half the year apart since both were intact(though the female was taken out of season with hormonal ‘jill jabs’ and later chemically spayed with implants). They would be separated when rut hit to avoid any unwanted uh… everything. Fortunately they were very bonded to us, so we could step in and fill the role until breeding season was over and everyone stopped being a hormonal nut job. They also were totally cool to go right back to being littermates(very lucky). It definitely comes down to the households lifestyle and the individual ferrets involved.

Agreed, a glass aquarium would be cruel and negligent. You cannot keep a ferret in glass. They need ample ventilation to remain healthy, I could not picture a stoat or any mustelid being different in that regard. I don’t keep rodents, so I won’t weigh in beyond the opinion it’s probably cruel to keep them in glass too. Even though lots of people do. Honestly aquariums are only good for aquatics or species that require humidity levels higher than our homes.

@@michaelchambers7770 Aquariums (and other solid sided enclosures made from glass or plastic) are often recommended for small rodents such as mice, gerbils, and hamsters. The ferrets in Petco are always kept in glass (or maybe acrylic?) octagon enclosures to no opposition.

They can’t really be domesticated. They are so excessively high energy they get very stressed in a cage, and even injure themselves in their constant efforts to escape. It’s better to make friends with a wild one you can convince to come visit you. They love bits of raw meat you can leave out for them and will eventually become curious enough to come check you out, even responding to your voice. They have a powerful bite, however, so handling a wild one is not recommended.

@@delicitymd6670 well, if these aren’t native, it’s likely you have similar species. The same cautionary rule applies: wild animals belong in the wild. If you want a weasel, get a ferret because they have been domesticated, bred to be comfortable kept indoors in cages. They’ll still BEHAVE the same as other weasels, just far less likely to rip into your hand or frantically pace to and fro if contained.

Stoats and weasels are not pets. They are wild animals and not domesticated. Get a ferret which is a domestic polecat, much better idea. I have a rescued EU polecat hob and he is not a pet. He can’t be reintroduced into the wild hence why he’s here. He lives with us and a group of ferrets but he can never be regarded as a pet. A stoat would give you the same problems as they like the polecat are not domesticated.

While I appreciate the general discussion you've provided on the stoat, the suggestion about the cage or containment you'd need to house the species was truly sickening. As shown in your video, being kept in such a small and barren container they become frenzied and eventually worse, I would expect. How would anyone think such an option was viable? This is poor advice and is irresponsible if you value and respect wildlife and want to encourage others to do so. There is a good channel on stoat care and habitat here by Robt Fuller.

You have no idea what's going on in that clip, where these rarely owned animals are from, how long they've been there, or any other details yet you imagine some photographer is an expert on their care or that the animals in his care never act "frenzied" which I'd find hard to believe. Nor is that my enclosure it's just one of the rare clips available for my use at that time, so spare me the whining.

@@Maspets That looks like a young weasel, not stoat. And stoats in a cage sized as mentioned can be kept for at least a month if looked after. I don’t consider that very funny “better for observation” heh? Well in that case don’t keep them as pets, a living thing should not be used for observation in a cage. Just like how I hate that people keep birds in a cage without letting them interact with you, if your going to even have a pet you should treat them as a companion, a best friend more than something pretty to look at, as well as give them the proper care. Like birds in captivity should not be fed seeds because seeds are very high in fat and they are not getting the same amount of exercise as they would be in the wild, so you should be feeding them high quality pellets (non colored) as well as a variety of veggies. And keep them in a large horizontal cage letting them out to interact for atleast 2 hours and 30 minutes a day, more if you can. People should be aware of this issue, nobody should use their pet as a pretty ornament in a cage, imagine how you’d feel if you were just something trapped for people to put their dumb faces up at the glass or bars of a cage, you’d be frightened, and depressed (yes animals can get depressed too, I’ve witnessed it)

No mustelid should be kept as a "pet." In fact, they are not and never will be "pets." At best, they can be your friend if you want to play with them (the mustelid family all love to play). They are wild and that is where they should be. Any video suggesting keeping them and what you will need to do so should not be allowed in case anyone is encouraged to give it a try. Not only are they wild, they are a member of a very intelligent family, none of whom should be in captivity. Furthermore, they are carnivores and you will get a bite sooner or later even if by mistake. Their method of letting you know they like you is to nip you (to them that's gentle) rather than bite hard (and like all members of that family they bite like a steel trap). Also, you do not mention the smell this family cause in their living quarters, the skunk being the worst (although they are recently no longer considered a mustelid), due to musk glands. They can also be expensive because they require a diet of a variety of fresh meat. In short, they should not be promoted as possible pets and they do not want to be pets either.

Once he grabbed something, it was "his" to steal, hide away, and sometimes destroy. He was an excellent animal companion (who would wake me up by licking my face), and if I didn't live in San Diego, I would get a pair of them. I agree that no other mustelid should be kept as a pet. If it weren't for zoos, many animals would've just been put down, and there are lots of animals that would've gone extinct. They often take in animals that can't be released for various reasons, and if it wasn't for zoos, those animals would've just been killed. Yes, there are some zoos that are horrible, but that doesn't mean that they are all bad. Some zoos work very hard to make sure the animals are happy. Also, zoos teach a lot of people about different animals and why they should be respected and helped. If it weren't for zoos, there are many people who wouldn't donate their money to conservation efforts and other things like that that are helping animals in the wild that need help and could go extinct without it. So, in my opinion zoos are necessary. You can't just judge them all because some of them are horrible. We should be making sure that all zoos take care of their animals properly instead of trying to condemn them all.
