You hit the nail on the head with sound proofing the room. If you remember the singer Jewel from the 90's and early 00's? She had a house set up with recording panels in the walls and wiring running under the floors. She also had false walls built and covered with cloth to prevent reverb/echo. She used that house as a guest house for her musicians and recording studio. We now own that house. Its so cool. You could be talking in the kitchen and go into the living room and it sounds so different without any reverb/echo. Half the house is finished that way. I've set up my guitar amps in what was the drum recording room and with both sets of doors closed you can barely make out my playing at a volume level that leaves my ears ringing for a few hours. Unfortunately, the room that I set my aquariums up in (used to be a two car garage/now a second living room) does not have the sound deadening false walls. When I was in the Air Force, living in the dorms, the dorm manager gave me one of the storage closets to use as a sound room. I took ceiling tiles and glued them to the walls to break up and deaden the sound. Again, I played at levels that'd leave my ears ringing but you could only hear muffled sounds on the other side of the door and walls. The trick is to break up and absorb vibrations and sound. Now that I'm 50+ years old and my hearing is pretty much shot, I don't really notice the sounds of water flowing through my tanks or sounds of multiple return pumps. Great video! Thank you for sharing.
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 3 года назад
That is really cool. I would love to put up false walls with just sound absorbing in mind.
@strat1960s
@strat1960s 3 года назад
@@tidalgardens One thing I forgot to mention above was the use of angles to break up the sound waves. In the drum room, for example, there are no 90 degree corners in the walls or where the walls meet the ceiling.

Tip #10 - To eliminate cascading sounds of water gushing down into the filter socks in the sump, place an acrylic/glass DIY lid over that area of the sump. You can also buy from IKEA plastic kitchen cutting boards and cut it to size. An alternative way but more cumbersome long term is to place a small amount of filter floss on the surface of the filter socks (clinging onto or clamped onto something rigid) to allow the water to land on, silencing the falling water noise.

Tip number 10: avoid lights that have fans. They are by far the noisiest equipment in my tank.

There is a trade-off here, passively cooled LEDs tend to age out and lose color calibration faster than their actively cooled counterparts. To counteract this, passively cooled LED systems must have much larger heat sinks, making them more difficult to rig. Looking at a few actively cooled systems today, it looks like replacing the fans is pretty easy, which, with my experience with LED lighting over the years, this is pretty normal.

If you have bends in the plumbing in pipes that end up with a little air in them it amplifies the already noisy flow. You can apply foam pipe insulation to the pipes to deaden the noise as well as adding thermal stability.

if you have a sump in your stand, you can mount a sound dampening panel to the underside of your stand. I would recommend a sound panel designed for external use, less efficient but they are less likely for mold growth.

Unfortunately the skimmer I have is a little too large. The ones we are using currently are the 8000 series which uses a 870gph pump and the largest Varios DC skimmer pump is a 500gph pump made for a 6000 series skimmer. If it is an option in the future I am definitely going to upgrade to a DC model.

Hello Friend, thanks for the tips. Glad you are ocd 😁. I work in biotech and thought I’d give you insight on silicone tubing as I use it quite a bit, USP class vi plat cured. You are having issues sourcing large id tubing because burst pressures and wall thickness for silicone do not apply well industrially over 1 inch. At that point of flow/pressure urs, you design in hoses which can be lined with Teflon if you like. You could buy hosing and cut them and outer screw clamp them over pvc piping at transition points. There is also braided tubing for help with pressure or suction collapse. Check out VWR/avantor or Parker/scilog for tubing solutions.

For those who opt for vortech pumps, understand that you add external noise with the motor being on the outside..they've gotten better but with age do get louder especially at higher speeds...and you will get some vibration through the glass. Internal pumps take up more real estate in the tank but make much less noise if at all.

I personally wouldn't add silicone tubing just because the loops are connected through bulkheads on the bottoms of the tanks, mostly just to not tempt Murphy's Law into draining the tank because of damaged/ruptured soft tubing. Even with the trays, it wouldn't take long for it to drain a significant volume of water onto your floors given the head height at the pump, not to mention however much the sump holds that can be pumped by the return. Just my thoughts/word vomit

Than, you didn't mention the second drain of the BEAN Animal containing a small tube on top of the drain which runs down into the overflow box just beneath the surface of the overflow water. Any reason? This makes the second drain even more powerful because it deals with excess air in the drainpipe to flush away and thus creating a full siphon. The emergency drain is not a full siphon because air tends to always get into the straight pipe. The first and second drains are no straight pipes but have an elbow on top of them in order to silence the drain some more and create a somehow larger siphon. I have a Bean Animal type of overflow in my 40 gallon cube but as I had no experience (or the manufacturer I must say) the overflow box is a little too shallow which is why the first drain is positioned just a little too high so that it isn't as silent as I envisioned. RIP Bean Animal!
@tidalgardens

The second drain is the one that people modify the most. I favor the simplicity of just keeping it a straight pipe.

Be careful with telling people that they can DIY sound absorption panels. While this is somewhat true, sound absorption panels made by legit companies carry a special fire rating that you don't get with off the shelf cloths and foams that you can buy from your local hardware/sewing store. Just about anything that can be built DIY for super cheap is going to be fuel in the event of a fire while the pro-grade still will resist burning.
