This week in Idaho we put in our first line of security, a farm gate. We show how we dug our own holes, mixed or own concrete, and installed our gate off grid.

About Us:
We are a homeschool and homesteading family of 6 that farms our 1 acre permaculture organic acre in WA State. We are currently building off grid on our new 20 acre homestead in North Idaho. We garden, seed save, raise meat rabbits, raise chickens, process our own meat, save our own seed, can, bake, and do just about everything that we can ourselves to achieve a self sufficient and debt free life for our family.

You should install a wheel for the end of the gate to roll on. They have several different types available at most home/farm centers.

Yup. Wheels are pretty much a guaranteed necessity on these gates and will allow them to work properly for a lot longer than without that support.

I was digging a hole for a post one time and ran into water too. My solution was to dig my whole big enough around for a five gallon bucket. I put a bucket in the whole and filled around the bucket with dirt I took out of the whole. Then placed my post (4x4) in the bucket and finished filling in the whole with concrete. It worked very well and I didn't worry about the water rotting my post or the concrete affecting my water. So far so good for the past 15 years.

Nice job, just a thought, I always paint my entire post, (even though it's treated), before I drop her in the hole. I paint it with a good exterior oil base paint and always paint heavy on both ends. Very neat and clean job on the gate it looks great! Just a suggestion, when putting the cable around the tree....if you would have used a short piece (1'-2') of water hose, run the cable through the hose and put the hose on the tree, the cable wouldn't cut into the tree as the tree grows. Love the attention to detail that you show when you do your projects.

Anchoring to a tree might be an issue, in future as it sways back and forth in heavy wind and will actually help dislodge/loosen the cemented post.

Just for future knowledge, I have worked for several fence companies half a million years ago, you could dry pour the concrete with that much water and you would have been fine. Also if you leave a couple inches of dirt at the bottom of your post it will not rot as quickly. Love the video.
@GoodSimpleLiving

We talked about it but didn't want to get a poor mix by attempting to mix it I the hole so we took out the water, and just mixed those first few bags a little dry due to some extra water in the hole.
@randywatson9585
@randywatson9585 5 лет назад
Good Simple Living And Homesteading You wouldn’t have to mix. Just pour dry concrete in the hole. Even without the standing water you had in the hole, the dry mix naturally sucks in moisture the ground and hardens as it should.

Someone probably mentioned this in the comments already, but I didn't look. Here in Texas when it gets dry and hot, it can cause the cement to crack around the pole and then the pole is loose and the gate leans on the ground. I bang old nails in the post, the part going in the hole and I throw in some old, junk wire. This holds the cement to the pole. Keeps things solid. Just sharing, I dont know if you might have that problem in Idaho. I love watching ya'lls journey. Take care

Good job but here’s a few tips form an old farmer...1st great job with digging the hole and the turnbuckle bracing. With all the rocks you have, simply put some in the bottom so the post won’t sit right on the bottom in the water. Now with all that water in the hole, dump the sakrete right in the hole and mix it right there. It does just the same and speeds up the process. Everyone I’ve seen including my family and me, do that.

A very important part of having land is having a great gate! Y'all got a good one, too! We used to have people that would drive onto our property and either do donuts in front of the house at all hours or just drive through the yards looking at everything we have (and there were two incidents with people driving tow trucks up to the house at 3am) before we put ours up. It can get kinda scary without a gate.
