Thank you for your video. it contains many valuable information. I do, however, disagree with your advice about opening the shipment bag and leaving it open for a while in the room temperature. This could cause problems for fish that have been shipped for more than 24 hours as the water in the bag would be high in ammonium which is normally fine as it is non toxic when the ph is low. As soon as you open the bag and introduce fresh oxygen, you would end up offsetting the accumulated carbon dioxide in the bag. The ph will rise and convert the non toxic ammonium into dangerous ammonia, causing a a spike. This could result in burns and other complications. it is always better to get these fish out of their dirty shipment water and into clean tank water as soon as it is practical to do so. That’s why experienced discus keepers advocate the so called “plop and drop “ method and not open the bag whilst it is being floated for temperature adjustment.

How would you approach the fish that has already been quarantined and treated by supplier in Brazil and then by importer here in the US, without knowing the exact procedures being used? Also, as great as the discus fish in your tank looks, the tank looks rather boring to me. Are you a fan of species only discus keeping or do you also keep them in a community settings? Thank you!

Hi there! We recommend proceeding as you normally would, with two to three months in quarantine with good hygiene practices and minimized stress. Should any disease issues arise, start with a basic treatment for ectoparasites and consider a deworming food after the second month. If you watch part 1 of this series (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OHXDX_BJ7VA.html) you will see the entire length of the aquarium for a better overview of the setup. While it is simply submerged hardwood branches on white sand, that is the typical natural habitat Discus are found in. Our preference is to provide fish with a naturalistic aquascape, and in the case of keeping wild Discus, a simpler setup helps to control as many disease sources as possible!

@@fluval Thank you for the reply! I am a fan of natural looking aquariums and the wild fish, no designer variants for me. I do realize yours recreates similar to the discus' natural environment. Sorry if my "boring" remark sounded a bit harsh. What I meant is a bit sterile, no other species, even the ones found in their biotope. Is this for discus health reasons or just your personal esthetic preference? After decades of aquarium hobby experience I'm a bit afraid to approach the discus keeping as it sounds like constant struggle against the bacterial diseases, parasites, cross contamination, etc. Plus crazy amounts of water changes, at least according to the US hobbyists. Is it as scary as it seems? Is it possible to keep them healthy and happy with RO water, a great filtration system, UV sterilizer and weekly 25-30% water changes? Thanks again!
