Keeping your leatherwork knives sharp will not only help you with cleaner cuts and less frustration but a sharp knife is always much safer to work with as you use less force to cut.
This video goes over sharping the replacement blade I make for the lindispensable brass handle.
There is so much I could go over when it comes to sharpening but this is a good place to start. Like anything, sharpening is a skill and with practice it becomes easier.

I bought from France(I'm in Canada) L'indispensible Sans lame - Vergez Blanchard 22,61 € and Lame 3,73 €(both 2 blades one Blanchard another Mundus. Charter made. The Chartermade costs 32 dollars in S. Africa and 36$ in the USA. I think the blade is very expensive. I just bought it for collection, maybe I will resale it if not much is needed. I have tried or have at least 15 different knives starting Japanese version and Olfa utility knife(best knife and I'm using since 1990 and only buy the blades(you can actually sharpen them. Here in Canada, you can't find those things, except Olfa and the rest of the cheap Chinese ones. Leathercraft recently started, but I made before my own stuff for 25 years without knowing, but watching pictures copied or made similar ones. we have a Tandy store and most of the things are boring there, but recently they are importing Chinese tools and some Japanese stuff, but still shitty and expensive than I buy overseas and get by mails.

Awesome and simple techniques that work beautifully. Loved the explanation on how leather can wear down knives of any steel. No matter the steel type, you'll still have to sharpen that edge 👍

As a new subscriber and just getting into the leather working craft I've really enjoy your videos! I find the level of detail VERY helpful. While I'm not new to sharpening of things this video really explains the process well and provides a great foundation for someone that is practicing what to look for and how to do it at each step. I'd love to see something like this on stitching more of the beginning and ending. Your other video with the saddle stitch is very good (albeit the camera loses focus at some critical points) but just a quick 5 min here's how I begin, some things to watch for in the middle and reverse stitching. I'm loving all the content as I am just getting into this. Thank you so much! Hopefully I'll be able to come take a class with you someday!

Thanks for your message and letting me know what works. Yeah, our stitching video was I think our 3rd attempt at making a video so we had loads to learn, hopefully you notice the improvement as we have gone along. What would be helpful to see in the beginning of stitching? eg Threading needle ?

CHARTERMADE LOADS of improvements! It's very evident that you not not take pride in your craft, but also in showing it to others! 😁👍🏼 As far as stitching in the beginning, just really probably basic stuff that I'm not sure if there is a "better" or "right" way to start. Everything from threading to which end to start from and left or right first... it's all in your other video a bit, but ambiguous and I feel like maybe I'm missing something? Maybe I'm not though and I'm over complicating it haha. I'd love to see some stuff on rolled edges too! Thanks for responding! I love talking with content creators!

I actually prefer diamond paste for stropping. Believe it or not it works faster and better than the buffing compounds.

I have both the L'Indispensible replacement blade and the pattern knife. I know that at some point (no pun intended), I will need to sharpen them. I've never sharpened a knife of any kind before and have to admit that I am a bit terrified. I'd hate to ruin the edge on my pattern knife! I've watched your sharpening videos a few times each, as well as Leathertoolz excellent videos detailing sharpening a few of your knives. I am certain that I will be revisiting them repeatedly as I muster the courage to sharpen these wonderful knives. BTW - +1 on following Leathertoolz here on RU-vid. He provides excellent content!

Hi Ken, firstly thank you for supporting our work in the knives. Sharpening like everything becomes easier with a little practice. Get yourself a real cheap knife (kitchen knife) and practice sharpening this using what you have learned here and with Jun from leathertoolz. (He is very knowledgeable) This will help build confidence and a feel for moving an edge along a stone. Also, this blade is great practice as the edge is so small that even mistakes can be easily corrected. Regards Terrick

I have your blade for the L'indispensible and I'm planning to order your skiving knife very soon, but I'm not sure if I'll actually use a pattern knife.

You have a great way of presenting in detail, but not going to fast or speaking needlessly. I enjoy your videos! Do you ever butt stitch items in the round? I'd love to see a video on that technique!

@@CHARTERMADE How do you mark your stitches for that? Do you still use a pricking iron, at an angle? or a marking wheel. Since butt stitching often uses a curved awl it is not straight forward!

Does the size of the burr matter? Or is it more about consistency? Whenever I sharpen knives I just feel for the slightest feeling of the burr and make sure that it is consistent. Am I doing it wrong?

Great video! Can you please help with my problem! I bought a japanese style skiving knife like the one in the video but it has two angles..one cca 20` angle and another one at the very tip of the blade. The second one is impossible to feel on the sharpening stone or ssndpaper. What would you do? 0

Someone recommended to me if I'm right handed to purchase the left handed blade because it will sit flush with my ruler. Is this a accurate recommendation?

I have a “Right” handed version of your blade. I am curious why the bevel is on the left side vice the right side of the edge. It seems to me the flat side would be on the left side in order to run flush against a straight edge. It is crazy sharp and I use it all the time... Just want to understand the design. Cheers.

I have that blade and I can’t seem to be able to sharpen it so it’s that sharp. I did that exact technique that I learned from one of your older video. Kinda frustrating. I’ll try again.. i really want to use that knife instead of the xcato blades 🤷🏻‍♂️

Keep working on that sharpening technique, it takes a little time but you will get it. What are you sharpening on and what grit?

@@AlexisSaab Difficult for me to answer but if you are using sandpaper then glass, granite or marble slab will work better. If you want to get the best results the stone I have used for years is a shapton glass 1000 grit

You didn't talk about the flat point or show us why that is there or how to replicate it. I have sharpened my Chartermade knife many times now but I have a sharp point on it now.

I do that flat part because it gives more strength to the tip but will not be needed on thinner leathers. You can give your blade that flat by working it down on a piece of 120grit sandpaper. I will have to add that to our next video.
