To KEF: My research into Kef brings me to this video. All reviewers say that KEF speakers are not so forgiving in that they hv low sensitivity, therefore requiring powerful receivers to drive them. I am looking to purchase LS50 to pair with my tube amp. I am afraid that my tube amp may not be powerful enough to produce the kind of sound that KEF is known for. I wonder what KEF's response would be to reviewers and users who frequently find that KEF speakers require the strongest amplifiers, the best DACs and high power
@Paprika526
@Paprika526 3 года назад
I think their answer would be: Buy the wireless versions where the DAC+AMP is integrated in the speaker. As a bonus, that matching of the DAC+AMP+Speaker is done by a KEF engineer so you know you get the best combo that sounds like KEF intended to. For me, the KEF LS50 Wireless 2 would be the ideal solution. Unfortunately, I do not have the cash to splash up 2000 euro's, so I bought a second hand LS50 :)

@@Paprika526 Would any sound be degrade when transmitted wirelessly, as opposed to wired connection? Would the timing & soundscape be off as well, thereby requiring a very sophisticated calibration?

Wonderful loudspeakers. I've owned C55, C95 and Q300. Just wish the current Chinese manufacturing would stop.

Nowadays chinese doeesnt always mean worst quality. In fact i live in germany and many products with the tag "Made in Germany" are lower quality than random chinese products.

Really? I would never have thought this. Always thought made in Germany was always top notch considering the Engineering behind it.
@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120
i'm 100 percent With the KEF name being on the speaker the quality control is top notch !

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but is this not just a fancy way to describe a coaxial speaker? 🤔

I get that this system is pretty much perfect so long as the midrange / LF part of the driver is idle.... But as soon as you put bass through it, you essentially get a waveguide that's constantly moving back and forth... Doesn't this cause problems with dispersion? I believe that they sound utterly fantastic, but the relationship between the tweeter and the moving midrange / LF driver while excursion is happening isn't really mentioned at all which kinda baffles me.

It's a very good point -- one that our founder, Doug Schneider, brought up with designer Jack O'Clee-Brown. According to Jack, since the tweeter and the midrange work together and never change, they know how the tweeter is behaving inside the midrange at the various SPLs, so then can tune the tweeter, via the crossover, to iron out some/most of the anomalies the midrange causes.

Ah that's super interesting! Would've loved to hear them explain it a bit more since it's a really intriguing aspect of designing drivers like these!

oh absolutely the KEF Q and R series will blow your mind how easy they are to listen to. in particularly the Q100 and R300. The LS50 speakers are some of the best I have ever heard. I am no audiophile or at least do not consider my self one. I just love music.

yes. Speakers serve different purposes. A studio speaker has different characteristics than a home 2.0 setup, and a 5.1 or 7.1 have different qualities as well. Since the LS50 is a studio speaker by design I was concerned it may be too analytical (ear fatigue) or have too much treble. As opposed to something more laid back.

Zimba's Doom Corner no brightness at all with LS50 or KEF in general unless you're using a class D amp or a not very well designed class A/B amp, it could become bright if your source is bright. Feeding KEF speakers with class A power + a good DAC/record player will blow your mind! Regarding your studio concern, they do not sound like studio monitors. Most studio monitors are have several drivers that are not even optimised in the time domain and are powered by class D amps. This usually makes them sound bright and fatiguing, not the flat frequency response that they usually have. You could use KEF LS50/Reference/Blade for recording studio use. They sound superior in realism to all active monitors, especially in the soundstage department - no non-coaxial/non-single driver setup will ever have as much temporal resolution as KEF speakers.
