Great how to video. I bought a similar second hand keg with the intent to convert it into a kettle. I was originally going to use a plasma torch but this method looks a little more simple, and there's no slag! Many thanks to the uploader!
There was a man in Campbelltown, Australia some years back, using an angle grinder without a guard in place so he could cut an opening in a brick wall for a door. The blade shattered, and split his sternum and then cut his heart open. He didn't do well. It is BLOODY INSANE to use an angle grinder without the guard in place.
If you do not have an angle grinder, the thing that worked for me with a saws all or recip saw is to use cutting oil. I had someone spraying every 2 minutes while I cut. I only used 2 blades cutting the top. If you can do it Jon's way it is a much prettier cut when you are done

+Peter Mangold Dang $38 is great! That screwdriver thing was a $2.00 dollar tool that I've had forever, I had recently been using it to pluck dandelions so figure why not, I only use titanium tipped drivers now :)
Quick tip. I did this in my garage and i draped the power cord over a 2x6 on my ceiling so the grinder was hanging down. It makes it so the power cord is above you and the keg and you will not have to fight it while you walk around cutting. Be safe ya'll!
Good point. These Kegs only had a couple pint left but your right. If these Kegs were more full depressurizing them standing or using a sanke coupler would be best.
Thank you all for your comments. I've already built my single tier hybrid rims/herms system but I hope to showcase this soon. With this system I can do two batches simultaneously. I usual do 2 (12gal) batches in 5hrs and would love to share the process.

Hi. Maybe you can help me. I'd like to convert a 7.75 gallon keg to a pot brew to make my beers but I have noticed that the surface is not plane for kegs in this size like it is in the big kegs and I'm afraid the ball valve couldn't be well fixed there (there is a salience in the place we normally put the tap/ball valve at the keg bottom). Actually I haven't seen people converting 7.75 gallon kegs but mostly 15.5 gallons keg size. Do you think it's possible to easy convert a 7.75 gallon keg? Thanks
How did you get the handle on the DeWalt in that fashion? Most of the grinders I have found only allow for the handle to be placed in a manner that is not suitable for your orientation.
If there is still beer in the keg when you depressurize it laying down then Tilt it back up violently like that...you are just going to build pressure back up your keg from the gas releasing from the beer. I'd recommend getting your hands on a tapper and emptying the keg or just depressurize it standing up.
What is that file used for? You have a nice dewalt grinder laying on the ground. Just change the blade to a 1/4" wheel and it's called a wheel and not a blade like in saw.
Hey the nut holding the cutting blade is up side down. Look at the nut itself and you will se is that one side has this side up for 1/4" wheel on the other side there is a metal ring on the nut that fits into the bottom of the 1/4" wheel. the other side is flat and does not have that ring, that side goes down on the cutting wheel. I don't know how you got the nut to tighten and keep the wheel from free spinning.
+Jay Clark Call your local beer distributor and ask for kegs that are out of commission, that's what I did. I'm located in a college town so pretty easy for me. Good luck!
as a mechanic i cringe at your use of hand tools and the grinding of a screwdriver when there are other tools available in the size and shape needed. But good video haha
I know the feeling. I was waiting for that screw driver to pop. Flawless filing though. Swift side-to-side motion is sure to remove all the burs. lol. Still a great video
it costs a brewer about 90 pounds plus vat for a keg. I hope you bought this yourself rather than take it from behind a pub somewhere. in the uk its illegal as they are the property of the brewery.
+Peter Martin - Lets not go jumping ahead. There are literally millions of old kegs floating around out there. The grand majority can be bought legally. In fact, if you go to a beer distributor, they will often sell a dinged or dented and even a flawed keg on the cheap. Old smelly beer could mean a bar/pub went under an it was stored a long time after the tap thus oxygenation. If the deposit is lost and the brewer walks away, they often get resold for near the cost of the deposit. In either case, what a naggy grandmother thing to post.
