Oakland is in the house! Today, we welcome Bay-area native, singer-songwriter, Kehlani to Sway in the Morning to talk about her new album, SweetSexySavage, and the journey to this exact moment.
It's no secret that Kehlani was homeless just a few short years ago, but she always made the best of her situations, no matter how dark her life was. From battling depression, to being figuratively "reborn" last year , she breaks it all down and how she pulled herself up from it.
While in-studio, she breaks down some tracks off her new project - Sway specifically was attracted to "Crazy," where she tips her hat to Sway himself,

So many people are making ignorant comments about depression and suicide. If you have never been in that state of mind..good for you. You're very fortunate. But you can't act like it's not a mental illness. It's a real thing and millions of people go through it. Many people have gotten to the lowest point where they feel like they don't need to live anymore. Suicide is not something to joke about. Maybe it wasn't the right move for her to be a HUMAN BEING and express how she felt for her social media but that was then and this is now. Her album is amazing and so is she. If you can't see that throughout all the bullshit rumors and lies then you're just ignorant.

I agree mental illness def isn't taken seriously enough... but by the same token I think alot of ppl's response to that is to over inflate the empathy and confuse it with pity... and its def not a game, this shit is real!! and ppl def dont ridicule anybody solely for being born w/ or developing a mental illness... I believe she is well on her way, not only in terms of her musical career but also in terms of her own personal journey on the road to enlightenment. When somebody is on the right track, that's when demons (both internal and external) begin to obstruct their way because of course that fundamental darkness is always fighting to dim the light. It's in their nature to do that. Thank you Kehlani for being a shining example of somebody changing their karma for the better and being a public work in progress. It's never too late to turn things around. It's refreshing to hear a young artist be candid about their flaws and mistakes as well as their conscientious actions to correct themselves.

Eric White it's extremely ironic that you are replying and asking me this now. I just went on a little road trip earlier and listened to over half the album and that shit sounds good to me. She got something. Its way too early for me to call and I'm NOT saying she is the next Aaliyah or anything remotely to that degree but she offers something to the game that I think has been missing since Aaliyah.
