I recently had to take a corruption awareness course at work. The end test had a question about forgetting a pen, having to use one from your client, and the type you should accept. A gel pen was considered inappropriate. Yet here we are.

People think it's bad but it's also worse. Starmer is a lawyer and, supposedly, a good one. He knows that you do not get to decide for yourself if something is a conflict of interest, even the idea that something might be perceived as a conflict of interest is a reason for you to no just do it but also face consequences *for doing it*. My job explicitly bars me from accepting any for of gift, benefit in kind or reward with a value of more than 50 euro (and that assessment can be made by other parties to declare that the stated value of a thing can be less than that but the retail value of it can be more). I work a counter in a coop, serving family is a considered something I am barred from doing.

Problem with politicians getting gifts and so called freebies is what's expected in return, there's always potential for abuse with favours expected. You need to be beyond reproach when your in positions of power that have far reaching implications, but anyone receiving gifts is not.

Literally last night, a friend of a friend, after getting on my nerves, being rude, then later discovering I could be quite "useful"; offered me a nearly new bag, of not high, but not insignificant value. I asked several times what he wanted for it; he stressed and emphasized that it was a "gift". The moment I said, "alright, thank you very much..."; he starts trying to tell me about a favour I could do for him... Before he could finish; "That's not a gift, mate... Thanks, but no thanks..."
