Programme Note:
Through writing ‘Shitatari’, I sought a musical expression that incorporated the advantages of both traditional western score notation and the different compositional methods involving recording that have developed since the mid-20th century. ‘Shitatari’ was an attempt to embody this combination through the use of a hybrid instrument - a piano modulated live via a pick-up microphone and whose soundboard is simultaneously being excited by a vibrating speaker. This, combined with the sounds of murmuring water obtained from field recordings in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, was an attempt to create a kind of chamber music piece for hybrid piano and electronic sounds. (Matsumiya; translated and edited by Jamieson)
