It's amazing that I'm watching this video 11 years after it was made and in that time Keith hasn't further decomposed at all. He looked 100 then and still looks 100. Hopefully he will be around for a long time. I would rather listen to a Keith Richards interview than just about anyone else in his business.
Mick is the man, but Keith is the Stones. Jagger would be a great frontman anywhere, but Keith gives the Stones that unique sound you don't hear anywhere else.
+ladistar I hear Keith influence in almost every rock song made. You hear his style, whether it be country, rock, alternative. That certain sound,or hammer on or bend you hear it and you think of Keef.
You're exactly right. They're kind of like hydrogen and oxygen. Put them together and you've got water. But it's the HYDROGEN that is the MOST important. Wait ....
Agreed. I was a bartender at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC back in the mid-80s and Mick came in with his family for lunch; he needed some alone time and came to my bar in the mezzanine and just hung out with me alone chatting and enjoying his Jack and Coke. A totally unpretentious 'normal' guy.
+Audfile I never realized what a cool cat he was until I got to watch these interviews on youtube.....when I was growing up the focus was always on Mick....He's a great interview, obviously a smart man, and with a great sense of humour....I suspect that's why he's still with us.....
I met Keith back stage long while back. He’s a genuine man’s man . Mick was protected by huge body guards . Keith was alone and friendly just a down to earth gentleman.
We will never know a more honest, intelligent and talented musician - thank you Keith for your amazing body of work. May you continue you to rock - and roll - for many years to come.
I love this man. I could take or leave Jagger as a person, but I'm solid on him singing the songs at least. Keith, on the other hand is the man to hang with - and garden with. I'm okay with the neighbors stealing the crops. I'm not a consumer myself. The point is, Keith seems like a good chum.
Keef is ALWAYS smiling and laughing. .... He has the Joy Of The Buddha in him. .... Being happy is something you decide to do consciously and He's living every moment to the limit. ... DAMN I wish I could do that!
@@ryanjavierortega8513 Yes Sir,He is that, and In my opinion has written THE BEST SONG'S IN BLUES,ROCK N"ROLL HISTORY,AND WITH MICK JAGGER TOO,THEY ARE THE BEST SONG WRITER'S AND BAND,OF ALL TIME,REALLY, ALL OF THEM ARE,KEEP ON ROLLIN,FOREVER,WALTER B.MEMPHIS, EVERYBODY TAKE CARE AND STAY WELL AND SAFE. Walter B.Memphis.!!!!
The Rolling Stones have never been one person. They have always been equal in their contributions. Each one being a necessary component that compliments the balance of their sound.
Well if the lead is not confident the rest of the band fails. It's like a team look at football players the lead is like the quarterback sure they get more glory and attention but if the rest of the team wants to win a championship they just accept that.
The majority of the attention is on the lead singer so why would you want to injure their self esteem that is like biting the hand that feeds you. It's a luxury for some of the other musicians they can be more or less flamboyant if they want for a frontman it's the expectation every night consistently. If Charlie Watts wants to just relax and keep the beat no stage antics no one minds it's an easier job in many ways.
@@AnnaLVajda or a pitcher in baseball. He maybe the best pitcher in the game but if the 8 guys behind him in the field and the catcher dont buy in the pitcher will lose every time
The Rolling Stones are an amazing unique band, living legends and Keiths guitar was magic. Not many guitarists can fall in behind Keith and I heard a really good guitarist say he has riffs that cant even be copied, I am glad Keith is still alive.
I wish I could time warp this back to the late 60's and tell my idealistic young self, here's keith Richards in the future. and by the way, the beatles are breaking up next year but the stones will still be there in 2013. it's like we said, it proves you can only be innocent for so long but you can be a badass forever.
I love Keith. I love Mick. I love Charlie (RIP). I love Bill. I love Ronnie. I love The Stones. Mick soaked me with a hose at Slane Castle in Ireland in 1982. It was a hot July day and people were dying in the heat. We waited and hour and a half for them to take the stage but it was totally worth it. What a great gig.
cahillgreg - I can remember that day like yesterday and my wife would say I still act the age I was then too! We spent the time waiting for the Stones to appear with the crowd trying desperately to knock two huge inflatable balls up the hill. 40 years certainly went by in a hurry. I’ve had a couple of other lives since. Now Charlie’s gone. And J.Giels. That was a great line-up, with George Thorogood too.
Is it just me..... or does Keith seem to get more coherent and lucid the older he gets? Here is a man who has truly seen and done it all in Rock & Roll - an authentic legend and iconoclast. Keep rockin' Keith... Your legion of fans across the globe are right with you.
There is a documentary where he plays guitar with Chuck Berry. Chuck chews Keith out. Keith just laughs and takes it. Most big rock stars would not have been there.
What Nils Lofgren said: "Keith wrote two- and three-note themes that were more powerful than any great solo." That sums it up. You are right, but he is a great guitarist nonetheless.
@@JohnBJr , Yeah,ok maybe??? What is your point? That is not what we are talking about? Are you upset that I said Mick isn't a great guy? Heard it from three celebrities, so I'm guessing it's probably true. I even read that Ron Wood bumped into a girl years ago that happened to be the daughter if one of Mick's former girlfriends, and said " Your Mother was a nice girl, and Mick treated her like shit".
@@lorraineforte9175 Oh dear, it appears that I misread a comment. My mind saw "...Keith is a great guitarist but no one ever said that about Mick" See? that silly mind even cleans up the "know one" error so we're even now. :)
Good insights from Keith. It's a complex personality dynamic, much like the chemistry of cooking a great meal. There's a formula but it needs variety to keep it alive. Thank you, I enjoyed this very much.
In the Webster dictionary for the word cool, they should just put a pic of Keef,In an interview Charlie said Keith had so much gravity that people would hang around him for 15 minutes and become heroin addicts, it was ridiculous. They all wanted to be him, I always said Keith never stops being Keith,24/7 365 he lives up to the image, and that is a very hard thing to do. Keith has chain smoked, drank ,shot up you name it and he's still going, Longevity has to be genetic, His mom was in her 90's last time I heard she may have passed by now, but it's all in the genes.I saw them last July 2015 and they never played better, I have seen them 8 times maybe 9 and I have always compared them live to get yer ya ya's out and they came up short, mostly because of Mick Taylor missing, but last July they could be compared to Ya ya's they wern't just making their way through the songs, they were feeling it, and you could just tell, their rendition of moonlight mile was amazing! it was the best I've ever seen them. I'm glad I went. One day he's gonna be gone, that will be a very sad day. but look at all he has left the world. That will live long after we are all gone. Great band No gimmicks, no make up just guitars drums and bass in your face, It's only Rock n roll but I like it.
He leaves the house wearing kohl??? OMG, I love him even more, if that's at all possible. And...children, there's a huge difference between eyeliner and kohl. Anyone who's spent as much time in Morocco as Keith gets a free lifetime pass on kohl.
I often think his daughters are his spitting image....they have that "cool chick" vibe too. Patti Hansen HAS to be a saint! Read Keith's book....excellent!
I think that Keith is that grateful, public grousing aside. Really, when you get down to it, it cuts both ways with these two. As often they sometimes can't stand each other, I think they both implicitly understand how much they sometimes need each other.
Hey Richard you know what you worth. Far as so called guitarist. When you wake up in morning don’t forget to thank god you fulled so many for so long. And made a living
He's the heart of the band. When he dies, it's over I'm hoping Keith outlives Mick. Mick will sell them to the highest bidder. Fuck the fans, the offically Rolling Stones site is $50 a month............Keith's site is free. But I BOUGHT Keith's solo albums and THE BOOK.
Interesting how everybody has an opinion about Keith in this situation. When you've been together for 50+ years in a band, you're bound to have issues on occasion, no "marriage" is perfect. Both Keith and Jagger can be rather full of themselves, but Keith seems like someone who stays somewhat more planted. Looking through it all, they have managed to cope with the fame, abouse and what not fairly well. So hats off to everybody involved.
unbelievable how well he can still play the AX with arthritis ..you can actually see it in his fingers and knuckles how inflamed his knuckles are ..one of the all-time greatest
Say what you want about him, but he sure has got his shit together. He's been off heroin since 1982 and that's pretty amazing considering how available it is to a guy in a rock n roll band of their stature. Most addicts fall off the wagon more often than not.
pac401Most normal people don't need a pat on the back to NOT abuse heroin. Anyway, sure he's off it now but then he rolled up his father's ashes into a joint then smoked it. I don't consider that "getting your life together".
"Midnight Rambler" is a song that Jagger performs like a virtuoso and the band backs him up beautifully during it. See it live and you'll never forget it...
"80" was like saying "a mile long." The point being really, really old. He was never that good of a guitar player. He is a sleazebag and he needs to stop wearing the eyeliner.
Maybe, therefore attempting to copy Keith is a bad idea (even if copying is considered the greatest form of flattery) a frustrating attempt in futility trying to copy masterpieces. That is why they are masterpieces. Keith is a golden eyed living legend, and when he lays it down, it is his alone. He has lovable dig-able mojo, THE REAL KIND. Looking at the Stones, his sound provoked amazing creativity from one of the most seriously acclaimed and beloved bands in the world. (works for me)
+Spankyblack69 stupid kid, stones created amazing songs without tayler, 65 to 69 and 75 to 81 are amazing stone era, steel wells vodoo and bridged has great songs too
Jagger obviously wrote the lyrics to Midnight Rambler. Keith, who is the greatest, and whom I love, is exaggerating if he is implying he wrote Midnight Rambler for Mick. Please. Mick has even said elsewhere that the song was written by them both, and it’s obvious.
@@geoycs exactly. They wrote it together on holidays in Italy. I once heard Keith saying he wrote Sympathy For The Devil. Everyone knows it was Mick's song, words and melody and Keith just suggested to try it as a samba, among other takes the band did for this song. Now he says he wrote Midnight Rambler for Mick. Amazing.
Keith is great and when he goes after Mick he just does it, kind of like when I go after my brother or he attacks me. They are who they are and will always attract a large large audience. The stones are the last of my generation but the new generation has to know them. That is their magic....
they were friends...all thru life...band or no band...they had friendship....maybe I am too old...i understand....it is a sort of love...isn't it...brotherly love...childhood to adult...i had that with my love...childhood to adult...rolling stones to...2013...everyday people need to move forward...that is what they have been doing...
Stones greatest hit?!? How much of the Stones songs do you actually know? How could ever subtract any track when the Stones truely peaked? The four best albums of the the Stones, Let It Bleed, Exile On Main Street, Goat Head Soup and Sticky Fingers! Yet you came up with Little T & A? Geez Bro you really don’t know the true Stones roots
Keith was a beautiful young man and now he's a beautiful old man. Kudos to him. As for the interviewer, he looks exactly like the type of guy Rolling Stone would send out to do this - the kind that lays awake WISHING he was half as cool as the Rolling Stones EVER in his life, but has to be content with just basking in their aura.
Man none of ya'll haven't got it by now and never will. Keith is the best guitarists as well as being the best British secret agent the world has ever had or seen. Why do you think they do world wide tours. Being in the band is a front. Clandestine meetings in various countries. Why do you think they were the only band to play Cuba since Castro took over. Hello!!! Am I painting this picture any plainer?
Founder and boss of the stones was Ian Stewart-Period. All the stones say it, Jones did too. Even keef recalls in his book going to rehearse for Ian Stewart to get into the band that became The Rolling Stones. Ian Stewarts sudden early death hit them all hard. He was always there, in the back playing, he was the "Unknown Stone". Saw them the other night, true Legends and ICONS. All respect to them. Charlie Watts was his usual, engine driving backbone of the group. Wont be another like them.
What an interesting dude. I wish I could have seen them, or see them if they ever tour again. I had chance on the Steel Wheels tour in Indy, but it was sold out and street price for a decent seat was over $400. That was bottom end, and the better seats were going for $1200 or more. Same with the Pink Floyd this year. Wish I had the extra dough.
@@Revolver1981 He was actually up until the late 70s. He was hot and he was punk. Then he turned into this weird dad joke kind of guy like David Bowie. Bowie got mysterious again. Bob Dylan has always been cool.
