OMG!!! The video started very nice, them you started to scratching that nonstick with a metal fork and to top that to clean that pan throws dirt in them...🤔 WTF man, how many uses you get from that pan before its became unusable? That's completely wrong...
I love titanium also. To clean your nonstick surface like that it is best to put some water in the pan and put it back on the fire bring it to boil and then use a flat wooden implement. The food will come right off. That way you’re not ruining the pan. That is Extremely important with anodized aluminum. Be blessed. John
I have several videos on my channel that demonstrate how to clean kitchen items out in the woods. I use an old eye drops bottle and fill it half way with dish soap and use a small piece of green scouring pad to wash my pot or pan out in the field. It leaves your hands and pots sanitary and clean and takes little more time than your dirt method. For multi-day excursions, it's quite easy and little water is needed to rinse. As for those Titanium items, pant, pant. I'd love to have a set. Thanks for the review.
you really do not want to use metal on your non~stitch cause your spork WILL scratch the coating off . You could make a spatula really fast out of a fork from a tree ....
a little on the higher side for cookware made in China so I would have to go Snowpeak instead, which is similarly priced. But I would admit they look better constructed than other the Toaks brand.
Informative video. Don't use a metal fork on your nonstick use a wooden spoon. Not a good way to clean either you'll wear off the nonstick surface. I love titanium. Where did you get a frypan that big. Toaks is too small where do you buy keiths
The biggest issue isn't that it shortens the life of you cookware, its that small bits of the teflon (and whatever other chemicals are in the non-stick coating) flake off and you ingest them. There is lots and lots of research that points to this stuff causing all kinds of long-term issues when ingested.
He's right, though. Even @ home. You don't wanna bush up a $40 pan because you accidentally scraped off the non-stick coating. Even if you, specifically, don't heed the warning, someone else might not have the funds to be so lackadaisical about their coatings ;D
So to this day what is your favourite frying pan to use for backpacking? I’d like one for backpacking that is big enough to cook small trout in. But also non toxic and light weight. That keith pan looks amazing. Have you been happy with it? Or other recommendations?
I ordered the Keith ti6015 pot upgraded .and there 4 bowl set and a titanium 35.5 oz titanium water bottle with wid mouth open and I can't wait to use them
I know that in terms of cooking , it is the best to cook in stainless steel cause it will not burn the food . I have snow peak titanium cookware but I prefer the stainless steel for that reason. I would recommend to use a wooden tools when you use non stick coating....otherwise it will ruin it fast.
Youch! Scratching the non stick coating with metal. Kiss that pan goodbye! :) "Don't care" means "oops." :) As an " "demonstration" (read instructional) video I would hope there would be "instruction" about not ruining your pan, too. ;)
Nice demonstration, convinced me to buy the 3-piece Keith titanium pot set. At the moment it’s $46 on Amazon with free same day shipping....also ordered the Ti6300 multicooker....
I'm right there with you Ben. The nonstick coating is temporary no matter how you baby it so I don't worry with it either. Excellent video my friend. You made me hungry and I just ate dinner lol
A lot of people I've met and camped with are scared of a little dirt in there food.... they don't know how I clean my pots when out of soap. It does work very well and a little dirt just gives you some flavor and minerals.
cdawson198600 And bacteria, protozoa, fecal worms, etc. I wouldn't use dirt personally, unless I have no choice or will thoroughly boil water in afterwards/prior to cooking again.
Mr. Tangent you don't fry anything in a cold pan or boil water in a cold pot. The pot or pan would be plenty hot to kill all of those you mentioned. And as I said only if I was out of soap.
cdawson198600 Aye. Nothing wrong with field expedient methods; but as you say, wouldn't be my first method unless I am desperate or ill prepared. Food/water/dirt borne pathogens can be "shitty" deep in the bush, if ya know what I'm saying. ;)
Mr. Tangent yeah I only use it as a last resort for cleaning, there are some pathogens I've heard that are hard to kill with heat but they're not common. And yeah when I do use dirt I use dirt that's away from visible poop and poisonous plants.
I have a Keith 650ml Titanium cup that my Nalgene 32oz bottle nests perfectly in. I'm super happy with it. So as far as I'm concerned, Keith cookware is a very safe buy.
It's a real shame you couldn't test out the regular version of the pan, because I've been considering it myself. Non-stick is great, until it starts to flake, then it becomes unsafe to use. I'm very hard on my cookware, it goes directly over coals or flames. I'm not sure the non-stick would last in those conditions!
Between keith and toaks , their the only two I buy . Good gear , works well , takes an ass whipping and is still fine gear . And still use my msr xgk and Svea stoves and Titan wood stove . All serve me quite well .
Your videos are slammin' dude. You're probably very cool to go packing with. You had me at nature's washcloth & steak 'n eggs!!! Keep up the great videos.
I'm down with using pine needles and sand to clean pots and pans , but that is a quick way to fuck up the non stick. Better to use a soft scrubbie after getting most of the junk out with a paper towel. And a metal sporks fucks up non stick too. Non stick needs wood, plastic or high temp silicone nor metal sporks.
Nice backpack you have there. Savotta minijääkäri from Finland. Got it too as well as its big brother Jääkäri. I'm here to check how's Keith titanium products perform, seems to be nice!
I have been looking at moving towards titanium vs. stainless steel or anno aluminum. And... I have been looking at this brand. I think it is comparable to others, just need to fit purpose to needs now. Thanks Ben.
Great kit, now the only problem is after watching you cook all that I am hungry :) I do like that pan, not many cook kits come with a pan that is big enough.
Thanks for another informative video man. A lot of folks have asked Toaks or Keith? I have one better, Keith or Evernew Ti products? You were all in several months ago with Evernew, has thought process changed? Both have the long handles of which you like. One is made in Japan (Evernew, I believe), the other China. Curious to your thoughts now. Several months ago I asked you regarding Toaks vs. Evernew and you told me definitely Evernew? I have NOT pulled the trigger just yet, but I plan on this for Spring/Summer hiking. I have always purchased based on your recommendation. Thanks Ben.
Evernew and Keith seem the same level of quality for titanium. For me instead of calling one better than the other I pick products from both that suit my needs. I like the nesting pot set from Evernew but like the larger keith pot with bowls since it works well with my firebox and keith canteen set. Plus I can nest them all. SO I think building your own kit from these brands is a good idea.
Ben I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to respond back--I know it's not easy as you have a lot to do these days. I will look at both kits and possibly integrate both systems. As always I thank you for being transparent. -Shane
Looks pretty practical and not the slightest strain to lift and carry. Loved the xpot of cooking there too. I just wish someone made a spork-family utensil with a _can_ opener in the handle. I feel it's better to have than a bottle opener, because for real, what are you gonna use in the woods that comes in a bottle with a non-twisty cap? Some of us are heretics that don't drink beer, you know! 😛
Thumbs up at first. Then removed thumbs up after seeing metal spoon scratching non-stick pan. Then thumbs down for using dirt as a way to clean cookware. This video was an emotion roller coaster.
You sold me on the pot and lids but lost me on the non stick. Like you I use metal sporks and such. Wouldn't want to pay the cost and then ruin it right out of the gate.
I saw a video of a Japanese man that use a scott towel and put it inside the pan. Then he put a little cooking oil, and the egg. Once cook, you remove the scott towel with the egg inside and eat it with a plate. No cleaning of the pan! :)
Ernest, for $260 you can get a Heavy Cover (with two lid options) and a far better canteen cover (Mother Canteen Carrier) than what they offer. Been sporting this set up for a year now and I'm extremely pleased. That Mother Canteen Carrier is very built like a tank and just solid--it's expensive at a $106 I believe--the set-up will last you a very long time. I believe both Ben and Black Scout Survival did a review of this and gave it a huge thumbs up. I'm not sure with Ben, but I know Black Scout did a review and was stoked about it. Ben owns the Mother Canteen Carrier I believe--could be wrong. Check it out buddy. www.heavycoverinc.com/heavy-cover-us-gi-style-titanium-canteen-mess-kit-37oz-includes-tritan-plastic-and-titanium-canteen-cap/ lrbushcraft.com/html/titanium_mess_kits_accessories.html Peace!
The titanium point is not weight. If you put same size aluminum and titanium pot on scale, no reasonable difference between them. Only advance is hardness and durability. More weight loss can get under own skin.
understood. i don't carry plastic utensils or other ways to clean so for me it works well. It will take a while to wear down the non-stick coating to the point where it wouldn't be cost effective.
Louis, I reached to Steve regarding this very issue. I love his Nano Ti stove, but I was hoping for something lighter with the Firebox stove and he is well aware of the weight issue. He let me knows months ago that he was doing his best to bring it on board, but that it would take some time. Hope that helps.
Sand in Michigan? lol. looks like a good kit and good cleaning info for those who dont care about the non stick. Otherwise a plastic scrubby would work. Had to throw that in there cuz so many people commented about it,lol. peace.
Why get a nonstick surface if your gonna wear it off right away??? If you don't want a nonstick surface, save yourself the trouble and buy nonstick coated cookware. Not sure I understand your logic on this one...
First thing, love your work. BUT, using metal and harsh grit on a non-stick pan will very quickly ruin the coating. That said, when is comes off, it gets in your food. Care to research the health benefits of that... And obviously, when you scrape the surface up, it's no longer "non-stick". So waste of money and potentially a health risk as well. Just an observation brother.
Yikes! Word of advice: Never overheat a non-stick pan, and never scratch the non-stick surface with metal..... especially a coarse titanium spoon. If you can sear a steak with a non-stick, you've already exceeded the threshold of safety into the redzone of danger.
Those things will be black as coal dust inside them. The first time you burn food in them. They good for one thing. Boiling water..I gave my Titanium shit away. I kept the Keith 3 piece utensil. They are strong and don't bend..Bought the GSI Pinnacle set. Only added 7 oz. And if 7 oz is going to break your back. Don't carry 7oz of water...Problem solved..
