Kelis Rogers, known mononymously as Kelis, is an American singer-songwriter and chef, born on August 21, 1979. She attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York, where she played the saxophone and joined the Girls Choir of Harlem. Post-graduation, she became a backing vocalist for the hip hop group Gravediggaz and later collaborated with music producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, leading to her signing with Virgin Records in 1998.
Kelis released her debut album, Kaleidoscope, in December 1999, which, despite critical acclaim, had moderate international commercial success. The album included singles such as "Caught Out There" and "Good Stuff". After her second album Wanderland (2001) underperformed commercially, Kelis signed with Star Trak Entertainment, releasing her third album Tasty (2003), which included the hit single "Milkshake". Her fourth album, Kelis Was Here (2006), reached number ten on the Billboard 200.
Following a musical hiatus, Kelis studied culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu. She then signed with will.i.am Music Group and released her fifth album, Flesh Tone (2010), exploring electronic music. Her sixth album, Food (2014), connected her music with her culinary interests and achieved critical and commercial success.
Kelis has been nominated for various awards, including the Brit Awards, Q Awards, NME Awards, and Grammy Awards. She has collaborated with numerous artists across different genres and has sold six million records worldwide, with significant success in the UK.
Born and raised in Harlem's Frederick Douglass Houses, Kelis is the daughter of an African-American jazz musician and Pentecostal minister, Kenneth, and a Chinese-Puerto Rican fashion designer, Eveliss. She grew up singing in church choirs and playing multiple instruments. Despite being kicked out of her parents' house at 16, she continued her education and formed the R&B trio BLU. Before her musical breakthrough, Kelis worked as a bartender and sales associate.
