Broadway leading lady Kelli O'Hara performed "If I Loved You" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel on the 2020 A Capitol Fourth. Aired July 4, 2020 on PBS.
There will never be another composer & lyricist team with the talents of R&H ever again. Through their words & music, they capture the heart & soul of human emotions. Their songs touch one's inner core, bringing one to tears, especially this song. Richard Rodgers once said that "Carousel" was his most favorite musical, out of all the musicals he and Oscar Hammerstein collaborated on. I love all R&H musicals, as I never tire of hearing the music, singing the songs, watching the movies and watching live theater productions. R&H are timeless! 💗🎵🎹🎻😊
devydu, I wholeheartedly agree with you and the other commentators here. Rodgers and Hammerstein's songs are eternal. The depth, breadth, and versatility of Rodgers music is pretty much unparalleled in popular music. Hammerstein's poetic lyrics are insightful and universal in their appeal. No, there will never be another songwriting team to equal the sustained brilliance of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
While I'm so grateful Kelli's performance in Carousel was captured by camera (an amazing production), I wish she would also be in a cast recording of this marvelous score. She is the interpreter of R&H of our time. Her singing is so full of longing and feeling. It's delicious. It's heavenly.
Could anyone be more worthy of the word lovely than Kelli O’Hara? Beautiful, flawless interpretation of this R & H classic. I’ll now drift off with sweet dreams.
I know Kelli is a big star but she really should be THE biggest female musical theatre star of recent times. She has an amazing voice and presence. Perhaps she just didn't want to commit to too many of the long runs that the big roles require? Maybe I am just P'd Off because I missed her in the King and I in London.
To see someone so gifted with the purest of voices is incredible to witness, Will be seeing O'Hara this Thursday and cannot wait! On a side-note, I feel the director of this video dropped the ball here. Way too many in-out-angle shots. With O'Hara, her voice, and the song's content, one camera, respectfully still was all that was needed.
Kelli O’Hara sings “If I Loved You” beautifully with clarity and emotion. The PBS musical accompaniment seemed lackluster, but the song was masterful. Sierra Boggess also sings Rodgers and Hammerstein beautifully as well, especially with the John Wilson BBC Proms 2010 production.
The music accompaniment was unfortunately dragging, which held her back 😢 you could sense her wanting to take control of the song and *go* (from the beginning) but the pianist was so slow!
Usser Kelli is a light lyric soprano not a mezzo soprano like its Joyce Di Donato .Hear both singers in the vídeo I postei and you will see the diffence
Just watched & heard Kelli sing at the 911 Memorial Tribute in NYC today (Sept. 11, 2021). She sang "You'll Never Walk Alone". Beautifully done. Applause.
If I loved you, Time and again I would try to say All I'd want you to know. If I loved you, Words wouldn't come in an easy way Round in circles I'd go! Longin' to tell you, But afraid and shy, I'd let my golden chances pass me by! Soon you'd leave me, Off you would go in the mist of day, Never, never to know how I loved you If I loved you.
