My grandfather came to Wales with Thyssen in late 50s to work in cynheidre. it was only meant to be for a short time but he ended up staying in Wales for the rest of his life. I know he worked across Wales and at a number of pits in England in the midlands and doncaster also so its great to see a bit of the work. I dont know if he was involved in Kellingley at all
Contractors like Thyssen (pronounced Tiss-en) got the job done. Big Big money, no striking and no whining. There were others of course, like Williams etc, but Thyssen brought the long standing German expertise. Many were former Eastern Block workers like Hungarians and Ukrainians and Poles. The work was hard core and they got it done.
