absolutely one of the best middleweight fights of my time. both sluggers, both ducked, so said fuck it, lets fight each other. both came right at the other guy, fought hard. classic middleweight fight.
The reason why this was one of my favorite fights was because at the time of this fight everybody in the middle weight division was ducking Edison. Kelly not only took this fight but he came into this fight knowing this win would put him in position for a title shot. Kelly not only won this fight but He knocked him out. (Youngstown Ohio) babe!!
Coming from Kent here. Met dude at B dubs in streetsboro. He was drunk...very foretelling. Mirandas cocky ass didn't want that smoke after the firt round...kelly knocked the dog shit outta this fool
Dude, me and my buddy had just hooked up sky TV in a new apartment. We were still catching up to who was who in the division. What a treat we got, couldn't believe these guys made middleweight, and poor Cory Spinks and Taylor having to try and match that lol. ( Not Taylor's fault I know)
@@jnestor481as I now fade I can never forget this and pavliks win against Taylor. That was the happiest time in my life as a 20 year old. Never forget seeing this live. What a fight. Miranda was never ever the same after
Truly, Pavlik is a special guy in an age where the basics were often overlooked. Throws the jab, and 1-2… good stamina, good chin. That’s all you need to be champ.
Steve Sanders Some people... As though acting like a pretentious twat gives credibility, right? I've been passionate about boxing since I was 7, 1984'ish, and have seen too many brilliant fights to count. But I'm positive that, like most, there are tons of great fights in the history of boxing that I have not seen. So does that mean that I also need to "do more research" too? Because this is a fight I enjoy going back and re-watching every now and again, that yaks nothing away from any other spectacular bout. Hell, this fight was great, no was around it. The night of I watched it with the man who first got me into boxing as a kid- my grandmas husband, an old-school Sicilian from Queens who's dad was a boxing promoter in the 1940's-50's. He was enjoying it as much as Hearns-Haggler, one of the first fights I remember watching with grampa Sully. Maybe *he* needs to "do more research" also... Besides, at the end of the day anyone who really loves boxing probably has dozens or even hundreds in their list of "one of the best fights I've seen." :p
@@zues2013 if that is one of his favorite fights he doesn't have to do any research. Everyone has their favorites. I like Hearns/ Hagler, Hearns/ Duran, Hearns/ Leonard, Ali/Frazier 1,3 Holyfield/ Tyson 1, Holyfield/ Moorer 2, Gatti/ Ward 1-3, Pavlik/ Taylor 1, Lewis/Rahman 2, Foreman/ Frazier 1,2 all great fights.
Miranda was a beast, and Pavlik came outta of the nowhere to knock him out. Both of these guys would give GGG or Canelo a run for their money for sure, or even knock them out.
Please! GGG and Canelo would beat the shit out of both of these guys. They make way too many mistakes in the ring to beat elite fighters such as Golovkin or Alvarez. Pavlik lost to Martinez who was very good but not elite either.
@@MB-fo2sk pavlik would track and kill canelo... GGG would be better match since he is more adaptable with power but... But Pavlik was more skilled than GGG... And likely more power too. Pavlik was already on his downslope when he fought Martinez.... Drinking and other issues. The pavlik that fought Taylor destroys canelo... That man was too tough, hit too hard, and too technical.
I was too. I had heard of Pavlik and seen him fight a scrub but he really impressed me this fight. i thought Miranda was going to knock his block off. Not only the fact that Pavlik won it was the way he beat Miranda. Took it to him and beat him down. I was impressed.
I hadn't even heard of either, was too focused on 168 these guys snuk up on me. But what a treat I got that night, buddys of mine were like, surely they're not middleweights lol
I loved Miranda but I was a bigger Allan Green fan and then his health got bad. He had to have surgery right after the Miranda fight if I recall. They removed some of his colon. That’s why he looked so gassed out shortly into the Miranda fight. He was absorbing water well.
Those slow motions replays are fucking awesome. You can see the skill that pro boxers have. After round 1 pavliks corkscrew rotation hoping to open a cut very cool.
@thewelshviper yeah smoger doesnt give petty warnings for wrestling or holding and punchiny. He lets fighters go at it. We need more refs like him. Most refs demand a game of tag and no rough housing.
I think smoger is great. He probably should have ended the fight a little sooner, but the Taylor fight was ended perfectly. He takes control of the fight so theres no bull shit and give us a good clean fight like they ask for.
Pavlick was a tough dude. To bad he didn't really start fighting til he was 28. I'm from Arkansas US and was following Jermain Taylor undefeated at the time. I'd never seen or heard of Pavlick when he killed Taylor a few months after this.
@@jamesdominguez8389 this guy is from arkansas. All they had to cheer for back then was Jermaine Taylor and the arkansas Razorbacks. So of course he hadn't heard of Kelly pavlik. Being the boxing fan that I am i felt that either one of these 2 men wouldve beaten Jermaine on this night. And they were the under cards.
He beat Miranda's ass, then beat Taylor's ass. Taylor made it a better fight, had him shook in rnd two, but damn good fight. B-Hop ruined Pavlik's career.
You better believe it. I saw a fight on the weekend and the referee, without giving the guy the chance to get up, just stopped the fight. The guy got up with his full faculties, walking straight as an arrow, shouting at the ref. There used to be a time when a guy would take advantage of the full 10 count and get up at 9 in order to get some recovery time. Now it seems that if you don't get up at 3 the ref is going to stop the fight. Yeah, we need more referees like Smogger.
Absolutely too bad garbage refs like bayless get big fights cause they break the fighter up every ten seconds .... Don't ever give a fighter q chance to come back when they are hurt smogger is the standard of good Reffing
@@atlbigbootyhos8232 a few people remembering Kelly or any other boxer is besides the point. The point is most people dont have kelly on their list. Yeah he beat Jermaine Taylor but I bet way more people remember Taylor than Kelly.
This is 1 of my all time favorite fights. I was sitting down bout 2 smoke sumthin & asked myself " what should I do while I smoke? " figured It been sum years since I watched this fight & needed a fresh view. Thanks a lot Shel Fuck man Miranda was eating sum fuckin heat in this fight!
There will never be a time I'm not amused by an entire room clapping for Cory Spinks hitting pads in between rounds 5 and 6. The word entourage was invented for moments like this.
I think Lennox is right when he said he thought Miranda was gassed from making weight. For an absolute knockout beast coming into the fight his punches just seemed to lack a lot of snap to damage Kelly, which Larry picked up on in the 1st round. Full credit to Pavlik, he pressed right off the bat for the entire fight, was utterly fearless and his shots were incredibly accurate with power. Anyone with a lesser chin would have dropped much sooner. I came here from the final HBO telecast where the final montage had Pavlik knocking out Jermaine Taylor, which led me to this fight.
pavlick is the biggest middleweight I've ever seen. this dude was 6'3'' and rehydrated 172 easily.... thats why he beat my boy jermain taylor. Taylor was 6'0'' athletic and tough, but pavlik was a 6'3'' bomb thrower who had a chin like a crackhead
Love Kelly Pavlik, loved the way he fought. Ohio is one of those places where we really love and are proud of where we are from no matter how nice or shitty said place is. Pavlik is no exception. He was one of those guys whos toughness and power are deceptive. He doesnt have great speed. But when his punches land his opponents body language says it all. I remember Max Leddernan stating he had the kind of punches that stayed with the opponent throughout the fight. Taylor got caught with tons of straight right hands much like the couple that led to the stoppage and took them fairly well, however you can only eat those for so long
His corner seemed incompetent. With the "where's the frickin' bucket!" and lackluster insights. Now reading this comment I wouldn't have any problem believing that he was mismanaged.
He makes sense a lot ...That damn long count , Lennox keeps talking about Miranda losing weight making him weak ? Larry I think Kelly is making him weak
weight drained? miranda was a great fighter and one of the best to watch but he just lost to a bigger guy that hit harder. fact. miranda should be proud of how many punches he took. your not going to out punch pavlik. everyone who faught pavlik said he was the hardest hitter they had faced. hopkins showed how you beat him and so did martinez. only one person tried to knock out pavlik was miranda cause thats how he boxed and look what happened. if anyone was weight drained it was a 6 foot 3 inch pavlik hes not 6 foot 2
LOL!!! Great? Miranda? I would end it there, but let's go ahead. It was already clarified that Miranda had issues making 160 for his fight with Pavlik, which is why he had to be weighed twice because he didn't make it the first time. It was also clarified that he had been throwing up after making weight because he struggled to get there. So yes, he was weight drained. The commentators even mention it during the right and they also mentioned that Miranda lacked the snap in his punches, which is another clear indication that he was weight drained.
he never had snap in his punches he didnt pucnh like mayweather ali or pavlik or those guys he hit like a foreman or joe frazier. i said he was great to watch not an all time great and all the guys that make it to this level are great. there are hundreds of players starting in the nfl. how many great boxers are there? its all relative. miranda was a great fighter to watch like a kirkland. and if you have ever boxed you know that throwing up b4 weigh ins in almost everytime for almost all fighters. thtas just a part of it. whether its cause youre trying to lose intentionally or just nuasea from not eating
Miranda"s corner , a group of irrational idiots; allowed that young man receive unnecessary punishment. The referee, was very indecisive. Big mistake Mr. Referee, that poor man was unable to defend himself. Where were the ring doctors and the comissioner?
dude if margarito and pavlik where in the same weight class at this time i owuld of fucking loved to have seen that fight different weights though damn.
+Norman Samijon I don't think so. Pavlik is only 2.5 inches taller than Margarito and has a two inch reach advantage. Add to that the fact that even when Margarito would drain himself to 147 he'd still come into the ring in the mid 160s, I'd wager that he'd _easily_ come in on fight night in the mid-high 170s if he had ever fought at 160. Pavlik was a large middleweight for sure, but Margarito most certainly wouldn't have been a "small" one. Antonio has the frame of a middleweight. He's bigger than GGG for god's sake.
Don Johnson no way he is bigger than GGG. Margarito is slim lanky while GGG bones is obviously bigger than him. look at the shoulders of GGG compare to Margarito. very big difference in size
for three rounds, that's punchers was very slowly, they moving as a heavyweight punchers, man, leave alcohol, leave drogs, leave night life, and do it boxing... as a refferee, you must to see how show or moving a puncher, because the fits of Miranda shake it,and refferee did not see.
you mean how hes trying to suggest Pavlik stop fighting the way that has got him dominating the fight and start jabbing on the outside like lennox does? i thought that was whack too
Larry Merchant please listen to the Ex Pro World Heavyweight champion Lewis please i think he knows whats going on inside that ring than you do. (25:28)
Being from northeast ohio, im a huuuge kelly Pavlik fan. I love this fight, I was 17 or so when I saw this and Miranda was a scary guy but Pavlik came out like "Bitch this ring, this fight is MINE! Wanna get some bombs off? Thats fine but you wont hold up to these youngstown made howitzers Im throwing your way"...and he didnt. He beat the black out of Miranda, and Im not even racist, dude was a shade lighter! Although that coulda been the fear and blood loss haha
look ay how brave miranda boxed this fight. i wish us smaller guys had power in punches like power in lifting and miranda would have pushed kelly around the ring. i dont get wy miranda didnt fight more on the inside
