Kelly From LA contacted us through our iNSPIRE site asking for help turning his small garage into a shooting space. So while we where in LA we found an Aussie model and Peter showed what he could with his space.

I can't believe how much the light changed at the end when you moved her back in front of the blackdrop. Goddamn you know your craft Peter. I've learned so much from your channel. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. You're one of the greats mate.

Definitely one of the most concise and useful tutorials Peter has done. Great procedure description. Not everyone can keenly observe and figure out what they are seeing in a way that is transferable to other situations. This example goes a long way to helping fix that. Lovely model as well. She obviously liked the photos of herself. We all did. Thanks.

beautiful girl. Wow. I miss having a garage to shoot from. Great teaching day. Lot's of great modeling agencies in LA. I kinda miss those days, maybe because I was still a kid back then and all the beginning photographers would help each other out.

I love this. I have a similar setup right now, I turned a 2 car garage in to my studio space. I painted my walls matte black to eliminate any unwanted light bounce. I'm curious where you told him about hanging a black sheet over the opened door to darken the garage if I were to get a 20 ft curtain rod with white sheers along the garage door opening if it would help soften the light coming in on that angle while still providing privacy since I often shoot boudoir in there as well.

Peter teaching style is very old school and learn as you do. Others of seen through the years focus to much on their personal style and how to copy them. Making your own journey will develop your own style. It evolves and develops as you discover. I dont need ten tips on anything...direction and not being afraid of trying everything is also very enjoyable. I play with flash outdoors doing landscape style photography...its fun and really keeps me creative. Love this mans work and his patience with others in teaching.

Any suggestions for doing Full Length shots with low ceilings similar to this garage? (My Kitchen I think is 6x4m and has 2.4m high ceilings) Was recently trying to get a medium Octabox positioned overhead and in front of the model in an attempt to have it facing down and sligtly in front of the model to feather the light from above, unless the model is hobbit sized there is not much room. Half thinking of trying to just point the octo at the ceiling to bounce the light back down instead or bare bulb it with a small reflector.

Oh does this give me some ideas, this concise tutorial is just smack full of information so, thanks to you Sir!! Also, much thanks to Kelly, Madeleine and of course, Bec!! I will be building, or re-working a small area of my basement for any portrait work I may want to do, from my days working in TV I am making a cyclorama, or cyc (said - Psych) and hanging two bars from the ceiling in a cross formation to hang small lights and boxes from. Debating on a backdrop between a couple of grey shades, a black and a scene of some kind or simply going with a green screen and then choosing a backdrop or image to use, the downside to that is that I'll have no perceived depth of field so hopefully the budget allows for some backdrops, even if it's old sheets or curtains from a yard sale or something. Cheers from Canada!! - Dave

I've started to garner a little attention in my area and somewhat regularly have models reaching out to me to work together because they love my work. But I don't see it, really. Imposter Syndrome. They tell me they love what I do, but all I can think is that I'm lucky enough to have learned a couple of tricks that work for me, and if anyone ever finds out, that will be the end of it. So, it's such a salve to me to hear it laid bare by Peter, one of the photographers whom I greatly admire ad learn from in every video: "The longer you do something, the more tricks you learn. That's all it is." That should be lesson #1 for any aspiring photographer. Put that on a t-shirt.

Peter people do not learn very well think back to school marks some always failed others always achieved 100% people will not learn by practice in a reasonable time what they will do is practice their failures over and over as a example look at the owner of that garage. people will blame their camera, lights, model ext. but not themselves. the best way to learn is through school or a mentor or maybe your workshops, could i do a video on that topic

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Didn't mean to overly dumb it down. This video is great as they all are. I was commenting on the idea in the first few minutes of the video that the light is better as she comes from the back of the garage out closer to where the source of light is coming from...seems rather obvious. Similar effect bringing a model out towards the light in a parking garage or window in a smaller room as you've done in other videos.
