If the S1 had the PDK gearbox it might have been closer. That 5-cylinder engine sounds fabulous and having experienced them in the Forrests on the '85 RAC, they sounded biblical!
I heard that group B monster in real life during the Canadian rally and it made my head tingle. That was about 15 years ago. Still absolutely amazing today.
Heyy mat we need a drag race between an LFA, Carrera cgt, BMW M5 V10 and a Lamborghini Gallardo, literally the battle of the most iconic V10 super cars
S1 all day every day. Ken was a legend but the Hoonitron is just a toy. The S1 went on to win multiple WRC's and its soul (and engine layout) is still going strong today in the RS3
RIP Ken Block. Every time I see a 4wd car drifting I wait for the camera to go on the driver and each time when I see that it's not Ken a part of me dies...
*That's a FIRST!* How do you do a 360 in a 1/4 mile dash?! Incredible control!! Few drivers and cars can pull that off without crashing. But, I hope it DOESN'T become regular because people would start doing that on the streets - meaning more accidents.
Did the Quattro lose? Yes. But not like 40 years would dictate. I’m more impressed with the Quattro than the Hoonigan, although the Hoonigan is impressive on it’s own.
The ur-Quattro was a very tough car to handle iirc according to drivers who had experienced them. Always-active all wheel drive system meant that it likes to understeer alot and so heavy to change directions despite additional downforce that you'll have to flick it so often just so it turns. But the traction compared to other rally cars of the time sure is godly, especially when it comes to dirt stages. Being much much lighter does help with braking and tire consumption compared to the Hoonitron too, but the Hoonitron has much better weight distribution and balance due to being an EV, plus an AWD system that can react to changes very quickly, modulating it's power every second. Theoretically, the Hoonitron wins in almost every way possible outside of drag racing even though the Quattro is a monster of it's time.
Seeing that old Audi being driven right, and that guy banging gears like a right legend is awesome 💪 Dindo, I think Ken would have given you a thumbs up. Great episode Carwow!
@@purwantiallan5089 Where did you get that number from because it's alarmingly inaccurate from every other publishing site. Also, one speed does not negate how cool shifting gears looks in an oldschool car.
That 360° really made my heart ache a little. Knowing the person it was made for wont ever drive it again. Im glad Kens spirit can live on in so many ways, and that 360° was one of them.
With Matt and Yianni driving this will result in a mid-runway collision or both cars careening off into the grass with summersaults. (or both) So yeah... It should definitely be a regular feature.
Yeah, that rally chirp is something else, ha-ha! Back in '03 I turbocharged my '94 Celica. I used a Blitz Dual Drive blow-off valve from Japan I won on eBay. Combined with the compressor housing I was using on the hybrid T3/T4 turbo, it sounded exactly like that but way louder. It was deafening!😅
Lets just remember that the original S1 is over 40 years old, I'd say that's damn good going considering the gap! I'd still take the group B beast over any modern, solely electric car, for sound alone! TBH I'd have expected more development over 4 decades, nonetheless the Hoonitron still shines & is an amazing car in its own right! RIP Ken.
@@kpcart I wonder will people be getting hearing damage in the future from the high-pitched whine of the electric motors. My brain is just screaming "change up!!!".
@@Helios_1nesince exhaust goes through the Turbo and the sound waves gets distorted, therefore many turbo does not sound as good as an NA engine. Turbo cars usually has a bit lower max RPM. The Quattro sounds amazing though.
Must be an amazing feeling to drive Ken’s car. Also I honestly almost think the Hoonitron wins the sound check. The electric whine is actually really cool.
Agreed - Ken recognised the future and the options the power of electric motors bring When you don't have the loud engine, you hear the traction limits better :)
I think the hoonitron sounds really cool. A big complaint a lot of people have about EVs is the sound, but I like it. Of course the Quattro sounds better, though.
It’s a brutal sound! You would be deaf by the end of any race! No wonder he missed the brake from Matt! Even without the helmet the noise would have drowned out any radio chatter! 😮
This illustrates how irrelevant 'peak power' (the stats quoted) is compared to the area under the torque curve to determine a car's true acceleration potential. The Quattro loses boost every gear change, so it makes a lot less than 550hp until it hits peak power.
@@sjhudon386you can, but every time the throttle isn't wide open the turbo is losing boost pressure, which takes a moment to build up again no matter where in the rev range you are. It's not just about torque curve graphs.
Acceleration is all about putting power to the road, so peak power is indeed only useful when the engine is at maximum output. Peak power is much more useful for top speed, though.
Dindo without even breaking a sweat, what a legend. Results as expected, still I see an S1, I like. An all out Group B drag race with the S1, S4, 205 and RS200 is probably unlikely, reckoning you are at Audis?
Correct. 6000NM is what I heard too. I don't understand why carwow says it has under 700NM. That's the second time carwow uses that car and comes with the wrong statement about the cars torque.
@@B4RDEthey quote engine torque. Like always. It’s the industry standard. And it’s correct. “Each MGU develops 250 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. This results in a total output of 500 kW and 640 Nm of torque.” according to the Audi Media Center torque at the wheel alone doesn't mean much unless we can see the complete torque and HP curves. Even a Nissan Leaf can produce >2.000Nm. Wheel torque.
Drag racing against the Quattro is the automotive equivalent of taking on the Flying Scotsman an a modern train. No matter who gets to Edinburgh the quickest, the Flying Scotsman is the winner because it is magnificent.
I had really so much fun enjoying watching this drag race, especially that Quattro Rally car, it's such a masterpiece of a machine and I seriously wouldn't mind seeing Mat bring it again in the drag racing videos!
Wow! He absolutely nailed that 360!! Don’t even think I saw any over rotation. As soon as that nose came around, he was ready and kept that thing straight down the runway! Impressive!
the electric hurts my ears, fuggn quiiiiii, like a pig. the original quattro, from my home, has the real 5cyl. sound what we want and need. after 1 year driver license, my uncle spent me his old quattro from 1980. pure 5 cyl. 200 hp, 2144 cm3. ok, it needs so much fuel ( 18 l. min. per 100 km, really more if you wanna have fun), but i hate myself today, selling it after 4 years. when he gave it to me, the car was 8 years old in 1988, but it was just THE quattro, best traction and unbeatable sound if it roars over 4000😎 rpm. so you know why i hate electric trash.and why 25 litres for 100km full power was it worth 😅😅😆😎btw, i know that the s1 is just over 10 max. not 11.4 or6. somethimg went very straight...and the last quattro, from walter röhrl at pikes oeak, had 640 hp. the prob is the gearshifting. otherwise, i'm pretty sure, the s1 640hp with modern doubleclutch will kick the electric pig in the ass.
@@purwantiallan5089Damn clear why the group was cancelled, though. Most of the cars had insane power and just kept getting more powerful, and neither car handling or safety could keep up. It was pretty clear that the only major changes in performance group B was going to have if it continued was yet more power, so it made sense to restrict it and force teams to innovate in other ways.
This quattro s1 is sure underpower because back to 80s the power and the sound of this car is definitely a lot of different! And for the the memories in 1986 the lancia delta s4 is lapped 6th in estoril formula one cirquit!
Why do you think S1 was underpowered? As far as I know its engine can produce 450-500 HP depending on setup, so 480 HP is definitely a good number for this car. It has really good launch and lost only 1.5 secs to a modern race car that has better aerodynamics, more power and doesn't have a gearbox. I think S1 could show better results, if it had another gear ratio, one that prefers top speed over acceleration. But for S1 top speed doesn't mean much, since it was created for narrow and twisted roads, where acceleration is more important. I was somewhat surprised that it has regular manual gearbox instead of sequential one. It definitely was loosing lots of time on every gear change.
@@ReasonX3Sequential gearboxes were pretty bad and unreliable until they started gaining traction in the 90s; most cars before that had a normal manual. You'd also probably be shifting faster if you weren't worried about damaging a $1.7 million car and were just focusing on speed, lol.
Probably only seems underpowered cause this is the only footage of one driving down a wide, straight road, lol. It'd look a hell of a lot faster down a narrow track
Wow that 360 was absolutely stunning ❤❤. We all love your performance Dindo, very amazing driving skills. You made Hoonitron driven like it should be. 🎉🎉🎉
The Hoonitron should have been untouched since Ken passed away. I know it's a great marketing tool, but it wouldn't have been exist without Ken. S1 is still one of the best cars that ever made, this sound is makes always goosebumps on my skin. Brilliant.
well the thing is it was build to race and to gather info to move the ev forward yes it was ken but at the end of the day ken and audi build it for a reason and they still working on that reason also to make you feel little better lia is now working with audi and with that car so it still within the block family racing (the video is on audi channel)
Rally cars need to be tested against each each on proper rally tracks: in the dirt, in the wet, in the snow, over long distances and doing mad jumps and crashes like I've seen in proper rally races. I wonder if the speed differences would even out when the Quattro is on its home turf.
Hey Carwow I'd normally give every video a 5/5 rating, However the only reason I'd mark this a 4 is because I wish there was more onboard footage of the S1 Quattro! As a viewer, it's always a surreal experience hearing and feeling the onboard from such classics. This goes for all rare vehicles you guys feature. Keep up the great content as usual! Cheers.
Electric cars are really getting in the job ,I like the way the kenblock put its power down and I like international combustion engines but electric is instant torque
I love the mechanical involvement you get in a manual ice car, the feeling of working in unison with the machine without a computer interfering with my inputs, im glad im old enough to remember pre computer assisted cars, I'd happily drive a 70's car around today if i could afford one as the prices seem to have shot up since evs came on the scene.
I knew both of the guys that drove those cars on Uncle Bobby and Ken Block channel was a personal friend of mine remember died January 2nd of this year
