“The message of [the GOP] is really whatever Trump wants, having nothing to do with conservative principles.” Former Republican Colorado Representative Ken Buck joins Jon Stewart to discuss his early resignation from Congress and why he doesn’t align with the principles of the MAGA wing of the Republican Party. They talk about the shift of news media to entertainment, Trump’s claims that everything unfavorable to him is “fraud,” and whether Trump’s hush money trial and verdict was a step toward eliminating corruption or a dangerous precedent of elected officials being targeted by the justice system. #DailyShow #TrumpTrial #JonStewart #MAGA

Ken buck was my "representative" when he held a veterans issues town hall with less than 2 days of notice. I was working out of state at the time, took unscheduled pto and booked a last minute flight to attend. After showing up 15 minutes late to a 1 hour meeting, spending 20 minutes congratulating himself on the trump tax cuts, and complaining about not having enough money to properly fund veterans programs, the obvious question of how tax cuts would increase funding for the VA was asked. After he and Phil Roe outright lied to a room full of veterans, I called out his obvious lie and he threatened to have the armed police officer in the room arrest me. I am a 100% disabled veteran. Ken buck and all the rest of the gop can pound sand as far as I'm concerned.

Loyalty to a felon, lol. Really grabbing that propaganda by the horns huh? Anyone who isn’t an “ideologue” understands that a prosecutor running for office on the platform of “I’ll find something to persecute Trump over once I’m elected.” A judge that didn’t inform the jury of what the actual charges were until after closing arguments and daughter campaigned …oh never mind, you meant the prosecutions started witness who was a felon.

The nearly unbelievable thing is that when Jon was accepting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, he joked that his brother was so intelligent and academically gifted that he knew he would have to go in a different direction. Very few people have the debate skills, political experience and pure charisma of Jon Stewart to "politely" eviscerate a person live on air, much less a professional politician. The Daily Show people that have those skills have gone on to have their own successful shows.

The civility of this discourse *is* refreshing. It also highlights why he's been able to have guests agree (or even ask) to come on across the board. You have a session that - although light-hearted - starts with the person saying (sincerely) they and the host will not agree; yet there is a *discussion* and room is made for the answers to questions being asked. Unlike - and all the U.S news networks are guilty of this though one "entertainment" co. is the most blatantly so - bringing in a "opposing voice" to simply talk over, humiliate, and ridicule for as long as they can wring the snip dry. 24 years it's escalated to rhetoric in News Media to the point of division being the sole purpose. After a quarter century of it - yes, it's refreshing to see someone finish their sentence before (in many cases, quite literally) being shouted over/at halfway through because the host simply wants a visual to stawman. Jon listens. He may have counterpoints, but they're based off of what is *actually* said - not a preconstructed narrative then forced on the person if they deviate from preconceptions. The fact we're getting this from a self-described "professional clown" is simultaneously refreshing (simply because it simply exists and shows it can be done) and *immensely depressing* because *no one else is.*

Firstly, I appreciate Ken Buck coming on the show despite being an unfriendly venue. Jon Stewart is a master of framing a discussion in ways that disarm his guests and open up a fruitful dialogue. I'm a left-leaning independent living in Texas. I love talking to conservatives and breaking down the seemingly dichotomous relationship that we see in the mainstream media. When you are in an echo chamber, those outside of that chamber are the enemy. That's the polarized partisan environment we have today, and it needs to stop. I think Jon is demonstrating how we should manage relationships with those with whom we disagree. Not with causticity, but reason and friendliness.

@MrBrock314
@MrBrock314 18 дней назад
That's not what he meant and I'm pretty sure that was clear by what he said. He said specifically that the DA took the case because of Trump instead of because of Trump's crimes. That is a targeted prosecution if he's correct. This is not a major deal when the person you're trying is ONLY a criminal. But it's a bigger deal if the person being targeted is a political opponent as it's a potential conflict of interest. For example, a democratic DA would generally have a conflict of interest prosecuting a Republican by the name of Trump. Because DA's run for office, he'd have an inherent benefit to convicting a political opponent as it would near guarantee his re-election. This is why DA's shouldn't have party affiliations so they can prosecute members of the public without a conflict of interest. Don't get me wrong, Trump deserves to be convicted of many crimes but this is an inherent flaw in the system that Trump and his lawyers are pointing out and they're not wrong even if Trump still IS guilty and should be convicted.

I would submit that most people outside of Maga's and the far left can have those conversations. The problem is, those aren't the ones that bring ratings for the 24hr news networks. They would rather have someone on that when backed into a corner on their views, either eludes to violence or says they're right because they said so. Those sound bites get engagement on social media. Like John said, the media wants us to be in a constant state of 9/11 because you'll keep watching them. Unfortunately we'll be stuck with Craig Kilbourne level of hosts till we luck out and get a comedian who actually cares about the underlying issues rather than its a gig

How can he say stuff like "a black guy robbing a bank for 20k gets more time than a white guy that steals millions and its not right" then do all these mental gymnastics saying politician's can't be held to standards because they are known liars. Trump fluffing the books is just a "legal expense" but ignore the entire motive behind it and the laundering of campaign funds to pay for that? He claims to not be a Trumper but a conservative, but then bends over backwards to defend Trump? These people really are the "rules for thee but not for me" party. As their billionaire donors puppet them to be.

Such an amazing interview. Jon would be a better President than anyone else I could think of right now.

This discussion on a comedy channel (no less) leaves CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS reporting in the dust. What Jon Stewart did was hold a master class on how to interview. Buck is correct, after Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, the news changed to entertainment. We as a country are lesser for that change, less informed, less educated on the events of our time.

But are we not entertained?

And sadly there's a clear reason why the news changed and it's the same cause of many of our other problems.

It's refreshing to see an interview where a Republican isn't treated as a hero just for opposing Donald Trump. This guy is just Trump without the spray tan, he voted with Trump 90% of the time in Congress and even still doesn't think Trump should have been prosecuted!

Yes, agreed. Ken Buck looks like a deer in the headlights here. Jon Stewart seemed to be talking over his head at times. I don't think Buck clearly comprehended what Jon Stewart was trying to say, but by the end of this episode I think he started to come around.

Yeah like i was expecting him to have some choice words instead he just falls in with “this wasn’t really a crime” and “it was politically motivated” and these are the people that are being ousted from the circle of purity? If this dude is a critic of Trump you’re going to have to point out how. He was happy to obfuscate like a 2 hp motor running a spirograph.

The Republicans created Trump when they went all in on Nixon's _Southern Strategy_ . It was only a matter of time till the monster they created broke loose

I don't think Jon persuaded him at all that Trump's NY trial was legit. He sees it as Braggs targeting and only Bragg- not grand jury, more due process than anyone has received EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD! 😅
