Artist Ken Gonzales-Day gives an impromptu gallery tour at the opening of "Face to Face: Ken Gonzales-Day" at the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art on October 7, 2023. He speaks about his piece A SURE AND CONVENIENT MACHINE FOR DRAWING SILHOUETTES as it appeared in Essay on Physiognomy; For the Promotion of the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind (1789-98), 2008. He also discusses his work "Untitled" (Cephalometer of Dr. Du Moutier with Self-Portrait), 2011
"Face to Face" presents the unflinching and innovative photography of Ken Gonzales-Day, a Scripps College art professor since 1995, who has been exploring the history of race and its representation for over two decades. The exhibition juxtaposes two overlapping bodies of work, "Pandemic Portraits" and "Profiled", to confront our often unexamined modes of seeing.
"Face to Face" will remain on view through January 21, 2024. The Museum, located in the historic Claremont Depot at 200 W. First Street next to the Metrolink Station, is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free every Friday. For more information visit clmoa.org.
