The whole family has been a class act from everyone I’ve spoken to that I interacted with them. I grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati, about 2 miles from where Griffey went to HS (Archbishop Moeller). My mom was the librarian at Moeller for several years, and when the Griffey family (as well as Larkin and [Buddy] Bell families) came back or were asked to help out the school, they always did so. Even more impressive, they made it personal (not just phoning it in or having a rep send something).

So fitting his last hit was a walk-off for the Mariners. The most beautiful LH swing I’ve ever seen. If you weren’t a kid growing up in the 90’s with Junior, you can’t appreciate how popular he was and what he did for baseball. I will never forget his last season with the Mariners. I was 19 years old, landed a job selling auntie annes pretzels in the stands. Basically got paid to have free season tickets/access to whole stadium. Favorite moment was his first homerun back as a Mariner, they send him in to pinch hit, near sold out stadium gives him standing ovation, you could just feel something special was about to happen. I completely stopped working, standing in the aisel along first baseline and just stood there in awe as my child hero walks up to the plate and sends (If I recall correctly) the very first pitch deep over the right center field fence with the smoothest swing in baseball history, just like he had done so many times before when I had gone to games as a child in the kingdome.

My idle as a kid growing up. He started playing when I was 9. He actually got me to like the Sonics. I’m from Pittsburgh, played all sports, soccer, football, baseball, basketball, street hockey, billiards, any sport to be busy. My hometown teams I loved and also had idles on other teams.

I was raised in Brooklyn and am a fan of that team in The Bronx (I wont say the name 😂) But Jr.’s swing is something I can watch all day. It is pure perfection. If they can bottle that swing up somehow, they should display it at The Smithsonian. Great video. And the fact that Niehaus called both hits is legendary!

While I wasn't at either game, I distinctly remember watching both of these moments live on TV. Even late in his career, he still had some magic in that swing.

One of the most sweetest swings ever, when I was 9 years playing at little league, I tried to bat just like him

I grew up watching his Dad and the Big Red Machine. Jr. was Great and I was happy he played for Cincinnati for awhile. Class A ballplayer.
