Norton's left hook counters were so crisp. He had a lot more extention on his left hooks than most fighters do. He usually got full extension out of it, and it's very accurate.

Norton for Ali was like Randy Turpin was for Sugar Ray Robinson and Sandy Sadler was for Willie Pep. The three gave the superior boxers grief because of their awkwardness, strength and relentlessness.
@mskidi
@mskidi Год назад
Ali wasnt a superior boxer at that point. He was ring savy enough to use his natural advantages, against the big hitters, who all were slower than him and the swarmers, who were all smaller than him. Those who could outmuscle him, would gass out trying to keep up on points and those who could keep up had to take 3 punches before they could get close enough to land one. Norton was as big as Ali, as strong as Ali bodywise, had as big of a reach, had stamina, and could hit strong enough to keep Ali constantly on the backfoot. So, it all came down to skill, and Ali's deficiencies, especially on the defensive end, were being exposed round after round.
@michaelwilks6268
@michaelwilks6268 Год назад
@mskidi Ali was always a superior boxing to all of them. Norton was just a hard punching awarkward fighter that had Ali number. You always run into guys like that that give you hell because they have an unconventional approach and movements that offset your rhythm. That's why I equated that fight to those fights that I described. Especially Pep and Saddler, Pep was definitely always the superior boxing out of the two. But Saddler's wiry cobra like strength used to wear him out. And smother his attempts to mount a sufficient enough offense to contreract his steady and relentless countering attempts .
@mskidi
@mskidi Год назад
@@michaelwilks6268 Pep was a scientific fighter, Ali wasnt even close to one. He had enough physical tools in his arsenal to allow him to excel without being one.
@michaelwilks6268
@michaelwilks6268 Год назад
@mskidi That's bullshit, and all that's needed for me to prove myself right. Is to point to the three fights in which he showcased, in my opinion, the most veracious evidence for me having this opinion in the first place. Which were the Liston, Williams, and Forman fights. His agility and quickness did not win those fights for him exclusively, His mastery of the ring and his above average ring prowess is what won the day in those fights. Not just his fleet feet and fast hands. He out boxed Liston before he beat him down, and he out boxed Forman in the same manner. Before he wore him out and took his crown. Whatever, you might think of the rope a dope. He was out boxing Forman while laying on those ropes. And as for the Cleveland big cat, Williams fight That was like watching the Nicholas Brothers or Baryshnikov and Michael Jackson all rolled up into one. It was simply superb,extraordinary, mesmerizing indescribable all these words and more, more, more. Also, let's investigate the latter stages of his career. Where you can't blame your hypnosis of his speed of his hands and the fleetness of his feet. The fights that I'm referring to are the Spinks and Shavers fights. You mean to tell me that wasn't superior boxing that he exhibited to regain his title in that fight. No matter how slow the delivery might have looked. And if he had lost his mind and tried to slug with Shavers what do you think that the outcome would have been. You can say that about Roy Jones because we all witnessed his demise. After his speed and natural attributes waned and erode over the years but not Ali. Ali was a Zen Master in the pugglists' art.
@mskidi
@mskidi Год назад
@@michaelwilks6268 The Listons, the Cleveland Williams, the Foremans, the Lyles, the Shavers, all of'em werent gonna beat Ali in a million years. He was as big as as them, he was faster than them, he could connect from more angles than them, he'd tie them up and mandhandle them, the moment they managed to connect and because they were punching with full strength, they'd get tired by round 5. Them especially, could never beat Ali, but not because he was some complete master of the boxing art. His defense was attrocious, he couldnt defend a left hook to save his life, his inside fighting was non existent, he couldnt punch hard with either hand whilst light on his feet, rarely he threw any combos but a 1-2, he couldnt stand and trade, but he was tall, big, fast, smart, could jab, could move and could tie, could eat a good punch and thats about all you need in boxing. You know who put up a boxing clinic vs Foreman? Jimmy Young boxed the heck out of that fight.
@triplejunction7073
@triplejunction7073 Год назад
Ken was an exceptionally crafty pressure fighter with a great jab and heavy hands. He could hang with any boxer or counterpuncher. His problem was that he had to come forward to be effective Norton wasn’t able to fight off the back foot. He was extremely vulnerable if the opponent was powerful enough to force him to go backwards. He would completely unravel.

Before Norton's loss to Garcia, he has been getting confident enough to ignore his handler's instructions/training. Only after getting KO'd did he start to listen to whatever advice they were trying to give him. Same thing happened to Joe Louis before the first Schmeling fight, got apathetic or complacent believing in their invincibility, cutting corners in training, diet, etc.

Three of those 6 Norton losses were categorical thrashings versus Foreman, Shavers, and Cooney, and going out in 1 or 2 rounds is not necessarily the preferred thing on one's scorecard, but with the other 3 of those 6 losses he put Ali and Holmes totally to the test, and it was not just going the distance with an honorable loss on points, but it was split points and / or entirely debatable.

Honestly, I think he beat Ali 3 times out of 3 fights. The only problem is that you aren't going to win a decision 3 consecutive times against Ali in extremely close fights because the judges will tend to give Ali an extra round or two when it comes to the swing rounds, and that goes for many of the great fighters that are beloved by the public more than average. In order to beat Ali even twice, Ken Norton would have had to knock Ali out, or at least get a knock down at some point in order to win or get another favorable decision. Joe Frazier had to do that against Ali in their first fight. Without Joe Frazier getting the knock down against Ali, Ali might have been able to edge him out on points in a split decision just based on his work rate, and the swing rounds.

The announcers doing Ali-Norton II should be ashamed of themselves. Ali through a 6 punch flurry in round 10 and missed EVERY punch and one of them screams out "NORTON'S STAGGERED!!!!" I grew up with Ali as champion and when he KOed Foreman in Zaire I thought he entered the pantheon of the all time greats but...when I look back at these fights...he got so much adulation from broadcasters, judges and his fans for doing little. His myth was so overwhelming judges would give him rounds for laying on the ropes for 2 1/2 minutes. Dunphy was always mesmerized by his myth. In Manila, Ali threw a similar 7-8 punch flurry and missed every one against a bobbing and weaving Frazier but Don yells into the microphone "A big rally by Ali!!" I wish the efforts of his opponents were judged and spoken of in a more fair and equitable way. Dunphy had Ali beating Frazier in a romp in the Thrilla while Muhammad was telling his second, Herbert Muhammad at the end of the 14th round..."Cut my gloves off...I can't fight anymore..." If his efforts, especially after his comeback in 1970, had been judged more fairly and on the merits of his effectiveness in the ring, many of his fights would have been much closer on the judges' cards and the fans' mind. You shouldn't be lauded for doing a little dance and flicking out light jabs but he was given many rounds with just that kind of showmanship with little substance.
@stevecvino
@stevecvino Год назад
I can't agree with you more. Don Dunphy was horrible. In the first Ali/Frazier fight he kept saying how can Frazier take this kind of going over. Yeah Ali had his rounds but Joe wasn't just in there taking it he was dishing out a lot as well. The best thing about his announcing is when he wouldn't say anything for a minute or so a round.
