Ken Tamplin Responds To Critics
It has been brought to my attention that a few people on the Internet have claimed that I recently have lip synced a show.
This video is my response.

Well, you could’ve fooled me. I was about 1 foot from Ken on stage during the live show and spent every day at rehearsal with him over four hours a day for three days straight. No lip syncing there. Why don’t these guys just challenge Ken to singing contest? My money is on Ken. I believe the message here is strong coming from Ken. It’s amazing to me how tall people are on the Internet. God bless you, Ken, you’re the real deal and I’ve been watching it for decades. Keep up the good work

Ken is awesome! I’ve followed his career since the first SHOUT album came out in the 80’s. He’s the real deal and I’m glad you have commented about this, Scott. The naysayers need to stop these false accusations. God bless you and Ken!

Ken do us all a favor and don’t use backing tracks anymore. Even if you’re having a rough day. Remove the stimulus being used against you and be free from it. All of our favorite vocalists lost some range as they aged. So what? You’re not 21 anymore and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact you can use it as a teaching tool and gain even more support.

dude you also have to remmeber he needs to wake up in the morning, do his thing, warm up, and then get along with lessons videos learning songs filming, tam meetings family and adult life of living etc etc. full time jobs can take 8+ hours depending on commute etc, being your own boss for a education company where you are the ONLY teacher, marketer, mascot, spokesperson etc. I am surprised he even learns songs.

Thanks, Steve. You are right that I'm no longer 21, but you might be surprised to know that I can still hit the high notes. I have to warm up longer than I used to, and this concert took a lot of energy, but I am by no means beyond my ability to continue to sing, and sing very well. I'm not saying I don't feel older, or look older. But my voice, if anything, is maturing, getting even more of that whisky/smoky sound when I want it, and clarity when I want that.

@@kentamplin I used to sing in late 80s / early 90s doing ballads for my friends band because their lead singer was more of a Bruce Dickinson style singer. I wish I was. However I could never do those type of songs in my 50s now. I am not a professional singer. I get that. However doing Tesla's Love Song back in the day was easy for me. Now. I have what you describe ... Smoky / Whisky sound. I have been baritone leading to bass most of my life from teens on. Didn't want it, but learned to deal with it. I have an old Brian Adams cover still on tape that I have dubbed to digital. My voice at 19 sounds like a kid. However, I had a lot more range. It happens. It's just that your career depends on your voice. You are a great teacher. Have fun with music Ken. God gave you talent brother. We stand up and shout, Ronnie James Dio style ... but sometimes we "crack". Just don't break.

I’m getting up in age myself, I know firsthand I can’t do everything I once could. I’ve always assumed any concert I went to had backing tracks. I mean I’m in the audience and see one singer yet for some parts I hear multiple voices. I’ve never claimed to be a genius but it’s pretty easy to figure out. My musical talent stops at adjusting the volume for songs I like but I’m pretty certain you are no different than I described above. My ears enjoy what I hear from your videos and that’s all that matters. I’ve seen a few recent videos made about you. My opinion is those guys have too much time on their hands and need to find a better hobby

Hey, don’t sell yourself short. No offense to Ken but he looks pretty old and he’s still capable of singing - regardless of whether he did or didn’t mime. Not only that, but take TobyMac for another example. He’s around my mom’s age. She has trouble walking. He’s still out there singing better than ever.

I am not against using backing tracks but nowadays with all technologies available lots of modern bands over exploiting these features. I recently was at a gig where half of the band’s sound was back tracked. We come to gigs to have an experience of live sound. Me and my band don’t use backing tracks at stage at all. We aspire for the raw old school sound on stage. Imperfect? Yes! Honest? Double yes! And more and more people appreciate that!

Ken, I have your course and I love it. It's been very helpful to me. I also love to hear u sing. But I would love for u to have some one play the acoustic guitar and u sing one of ur songs all the way through. I've seen Bruce Dickinson do Tears of a Dragon accapella and he nailed it. Do something like that. No studio enhancements, just straight singing. The proof is in the singing (only), right? That will shut the mouths of the critics.

In the beginning of starting the Vocal Academy, it seemed kind of too good to be true. After over 4 years of training at my own pace, I'm on vol 3, KICKING ASS at my live shows! Singing songs I always "pretended" to sing and now its full tilt. What can I say other than, proof is in the singing, mine, Ken's, and the thousands of other wild souls that love singing rock n roll who've learned from KTVA. Haters gonna hate, sucks to suck!

I think that a LOT of artists are playing to clicks, because they’re also using backing tracks for impossible backing vocals, maybe some ambient instrumentation (strings, etc),etc. I know the band Shout are not singing those high backing vocals (because they’re actually Ken’s studio vocals). But that being said - I believe his lead vocals are live. We all know he can sing… 🎶🤘🏼

Yeah, I noticed some people don’t understand what the accusation was. For clarification, it wasn’t that Ken can’t sing and has been lip syncing to someone else. It’s that he’s lip syncing _to himself_ . Either way it goes he can sing for sure, which is a big part of why I find this so confusing. Why is it such a big deal if he lip syncs to himself?

The Pegasus guy made an analysis that was pretty convincing, to me it looked & sounded like you had backing tracks on the chorus to thicken up the vocals, which is understandable these days with the volumes we play at. Whatever, I don't think anyone seriously doubts your ability to sing. Rock on Ken. 🤘🤘

@@earld158 Sorry, earld, but I was not miming. I was singing into a mic that was the lead vocals. Nothing is "dubbed in". There are backing vocal tracks playing, most notably on the big multi-vocal intros and choruses. The band had not seen one another for 15 years, and could not possibly pull off the multi-voice backing vocals and intros. There is no effort to have the tracks handle the high parts of the lead vocals or anything like that. Miming implies that I was not singing the vocals that you are hearing. You are hearing my voice as the main vocal, and hearing tracks in the mix. Disbelievers will continue to disbelieve, regardless of what I explain. It was a killer concert. I wish you had been there.

Every one uses backing tracks. I just saw an interview with Michael Sweet of Styper and he said yes their background vocals are backing tracks. His lead vocals is live. From what I heard his vocal are’t holding up nearly as good as yours Ken. And they are tuning down a half step.

I've listened to both Shout albums as well as the Tamplin albums hundreds of times and it's quite obvious that you're actually singing. I don't know what anyone thinks they're trying to prove by saying otherwise when it's quite obvious they've never immersed themselves in your recordings. Sure, you're using backing tracks, but who cares? That doesn't take away from your live vocals. Even Stryper during the 80s used backing tracks, but that doesn't mean they weren't singing the main parts. Don't let the critics get you down Ken. You've still got it and I'm still a fan!

Okay, I was really hoping to hear your response to this nonsense. I've been an aspiring vocalist honing her skill for over 20 years. So I've been through my fair share of voice teachers. Mr. Tamplin - I must say that I am absolutely HOOKED on your vocal academy! You touched on subjects I've been wondering about for decades; i.e. when you explain how singers who are self conscious about their tummys hanging out may be inhibiting their breath support! GUILTY! LOL. But more importantly, your vocal abilities and your instructions are impeccable and have confirmed many things for me. And I'm only on like, day 8 of your course. And for any haters reading this -NO I wasn't paid to post this! I do NOT know Mr. Tamplin personally. I'm just a very self-conscious vocalist hoping to gain the guts to sing for a crowd one day! I’ve been creating and performing to tracks since 1991. Because I’ve been doing solo gigs or duo gigs and obviously you need tracks. But even at one point I had a four piece band where we used tracks to put the background vocals on because like you said we didn’t have 10 people on stage, sometimes I put the lead vocals on there too and just double them singing live if a part was really high and you’re singing three hours just to save your voice. Tracks are tool and awesome to use. The ones that got nothing going for the lives are always the ones that are criticizing. You have to be completely clueless if you can’t tell that you can sing your ass off no matter what .

Dude, Rush used to use backing tracks live on almost every song back in the day, because they had so much going on in the studios, they couldn't reproduce the sound with just three guys! And those were nothing more that some of the most talented musicians every to grace the earth. Forget the haters, they are out to do the devil's business! Love ya, man, but unfortunately, I can't afford your program, so I get what I can from your RU-vid channel, and it has helped me a ton. I have been singing and also have been a multiinstrumentalist my whole life. I have albums all over steraming sites (Pandora, Spotify, iTunes, etc.), and I just turned 61 years old. Yikes! Noticeably, things have taken a dark turn (vocally AND healthwise), with age, but you have kept me above water, at the very least. I am about to release my next album, and I have you to thank for some of what you've done for me on those rough days! Love ya Ken!

@@fruitcaketravel First of all, I never said the vocals were mimed! They never did many or any harmony vocals in their songs, so that wasn't an issue. They had backing tracks going for rhythm guitar and some bass and synth effects when Geddy had to do both at the same time. He did use a foot pedal when he could, but sometimes a song would require bass runs AND multi-fingering on the keyboard simultaneously. They even talked about it in a Guitar World interview done in the late '70s or early '80s when they were asked how they produce the mountain of sound when live in concert. So, no, not everything was live. Take a hike, fruity.

Probably because when you go see a bigtime artist or band like the eagles for example you pay a lot of money to see those shows. That's a lot of money to not see someone faking it. To be real no one cares what Ken is doing he is not a superstar demanding mega bucks so I really don't know why anyone cares if he is doing it or not.

@@AllenPendleton I go to watch and be entertained. I saw Motley Crue about 8 years ago and Vince Neil was at his worst. Dude could barely even breathe. He had two ladies singing behind him doing all the high notes and Vince would throw in the occasional sound, wasn't really a word or lyric, just a sound. Probably would have been better had he used backing vocals recorded and would have enjoyed it more instead of listening to that torture.

Def Leppard don’t use backing tracks. Drum loops are not a track.. it’s reasonable for someone who has 1 arm, and keyboard parts that Sav uses with his foot pedals are not tracks either. Vocals are 100% played live. Their in ear monitor recordings prove they’re singing for real. Processing with reverb, delay and echo is not tracks. Please do not list Def Leppard in that category. It is extremely disrespectful for a band who works hard at being a live band, they have come out many times to say they don’t use any tracks for vocals or guitar parts or anything. Drum loops ARE NOT TRACKS.

I seldom see shows without backing tracks. So this is in fact a practical way to perform. Just imagine to use a synthesizer and keyboards is always a fake instrument but it got accepted as the way to bring it all on stage at once. So I never see a whole orchestra to a rockband. So just get used to the way modern bands perform. Also as I know the green TAMPLIN album super well I always am happy to see it as close to the original as possible. So I am happy if it is close. Good musicians will be able to not only have the sound on the album but manage to have it sound the same on stage without too many backings. So Tamplin used some stuff but that was the exact right thing to do. I saw him live in 1993 and 2010 and all live stuff was just professional. I never ever felt betrayed or faked.

Personally I don't like bands using backing tracks, I know is a common practice now for a good number of reasons, but that doesn't mean you're not legit. You REALLY can sing and I really like how you sing classic rock songs, if I were nearly half as good as you are I would become a pain for everyone because I will be singing the whole day lol. Don't fall for the RU-vid drama, rock on!

If Ken have used backing tracks or lipsync at some point, I don’t give an f. He can sing, and he has lots of students that can sing amazingly as well. That’s all I need to know. If (God forbids) Ken loses his voice today, that doesn’t take away his ability to teach and educate others about singing.

I was working Stage Crew and working with the Sound Crew at Immortal Fest… and I had the opportunity to stand at the monitor board during Shout’s set… and put on the monitor guy’s headphones to hear Ken’s voice directly coming from his mic… and HOLY MOLY what amazing live vocals! 😎

Ken, thank you for being an inspiration. When I was younger, your teachings helped me improve dramatically faster. backing tracks or not, who cares? 99% of anyone successful uses them live and the average music listener has no idea they're listening to autotune and sampled instruments being playing by no one.. The proof is still in the singing, the point of a live show is to give those watching an experience they will never forget. Those who attended the SHOUT and Tamplin shows will never in their life forget it. We are spoiled to Ken, the guy is a legend who's been walking the walk for like 100 years (sorry buddy). Everyone needs to take 15 steps back and think for themselves.

The thing that upsets me the most is how the haters have not only created a narrative that you cant sing but have gone on to say your methods are damaging to the voice. Ive been using KTVA to varying degrees for last few years and im now a gigging musician in my thirties. How come I dont lose my voice after a gig anymore? When I was 25 I would burn my voice at every show. Now im 33 and have been working diligently on my technique for years with the help of local vocal coaches and also KTVA to fill in the gaps and im feeling better than ever. Ive also had my voice scoped by an ENT 3 times in the last 3 years and I have zero damage to my vocal chords. Thanks Ken for helping the singers you have over the years!

Ken, there is no doubt you can sing. To hit a big note is somthing you can do. I think it's fair to say that it's hard to sing at a high level for an entire show especially at your age. I do believe the conspiracy that you sing under backing tracks. The evidence I have seen is way too compelling. But I don't think any less of you as a result. Just don't engage the drama, keep just doing what you are doing.

You know… I’ve been quiet about this and I want to say TWO THINGS. I watched Ken Tamplin’s set top to bottom. 1) At some point, Ken had a very slight vocal mishap. That SHOWED it wasn’t lip syncing. I mean to the detractors: Are you telling me Ken Tamplin purposefully place a faux paus in a recording to “perform” a mistake??? That’s just idiocy. 2) There’s something with mic technique called “proximity effect”. All microphones have a PE in varying degrees. Proximity effect can be heard when your mouth gets close to the mic, hence the name of the term. If you were paying any amount of attention instead of witch hunting, the proximity effect on Ken’s microphone was HUGELY EVIDENT. You simply cannot fake that. Proximity effect in a live setting just isn’t possible to recreate on a recording. He sang. He sang his tail off. Deal with it!!

The mere fact that you had to even bother to record THIS rebuttal video is just more PROOF that you're exactly what you sell yourself as. You absolutely NAILED it. The RU-vid algorithm is basically programmed to sell sensationalism and 'shock factor' for click-bait and view numbers. I actually stay down and watched a couple of those videos, and, not surprisingly, they borrowed material from each other rather liberally! I also found the fact that they purposefully omit the fact that HUNDREDS of artists and bands use backing vocal tracks in their 'live' performances. Again, you mentioned it, it's just not logistically or fiscally feasible to have dozens of back-up singers standing in the back of the stage waiting for their cues to belt out their parts. Hopefully, enough of the 'haters' will actually watch this video and then either apologize, (yeah, right) or at least take their erroneous videos down. Probably NOT going to happen, but one can hope. Still, even with the myriad technical issues the festival suffered, your set sounded PHENOMENAL!!!! Like you mentioned in your Q&A video with Gabbi a few days ago, your voice got even STRONGER towards the end of the show. THIS is the PERFECT way to respond to the 'critics', with grace, humility, class, professionalism, and TRUTH!!!

Ive seen all the videos now out there. One of the things that floors me, is that alot of them seem to hate you, more than they do the act of you lip syncing. Theyre complaining about your ego and how you talk yourself up. In my head, the salesman side of me goes "well duh, dude sells a SINGING COURSE. Is he supposed to believe he's NOT good at singing but can still somehow teach people to sing?" Anyone who turns a camera on pointed at themselves and tells the world they are good at something and are going to teach it, surely has an ego, and I see no issue with that in the slightest. In fact, people who dont have enough of an ego are typically the problems. The other thing I think is really low, is that they attacked your work in the form of your songs. I dont know, just seems low, like they used this window of you using backing tracks or possibly lip syncing to open the flood gates of pent up hate for you. My belief is if you feel the need to come at a mans dignity, dont attack his passion at the same time. We need to be more civil. Regardless of whos right in this situation here, I can respect your civil response to it all. Undoubtedly you have a powerful singing voice too, so i guess at the end of the day, I dont care all that much about the lip syncing and backing track rumors. Besides, its like ww3 out there this year. Im just trying to spend the majority of my time watching guitar lesson videos so I can get better at guitar while the world is still intact. Lmao

Honestly I wish Ken would stop doing the criticism of other instructors. Thats why they are coming after him. Just do you. You really don’t have to compare against other instructors, people know who you are, man. And you’re right, some of those other instructors don’t even sing and when you pull old footage it’s so so. But we’re not dumb. Let us do that work on our own. Don’t give them anything else fuel wise. I’ve always admired your work, it stands on its own.

I just stumbled across one RU-vid video of a musician analyzing the live performance. He was saying how similar the performance was to the recording by using vocal software with the wavelengths. My first thought in that was wouldn't you want them to match up? I mean, you're singing the same notes. So, therefore, wouldn't they be the same frequency? So, it proves he was in tune and singing the same notes. Great... Was he or was he not lip syncing? I don't know. I wasn't there. But, I can tell you that they didn't prove that he was. That's for sure.

It’s just a personal taste thing. I know Kenny has a strong voice and can sing. That he chooses to use backing vocal tracks and some backing tracks is where his haters and critics come in. Me personally? I don’t like any backing tracks and I think everything should be played live. But Kenny’s music is in the big hair era (in my estimation) way over studio processed sound. I personally hate that genre but it does lend itself to using a lot of backing tracks to replicate that ‘heavily studio processed’ sound Kenny’s band is known for….kinda like a ‘brand’. So, I don’t judge Kenny in a condemning way. Kenny does his thing and he’s really good at it.

I have been a Tamplin fan since 1989. I worked with Ken at Rugged Records when he released, We The People, and have kept in touch since. I have seen him sing live, playing only my guitar and he was great. He continually inspires me keep growing. I wish, I could have gone to the show in Ohio but enjoyed the video. Unfortunately, there will always be those who stand on virtue to tear down others. Music is art and Ken’s is exceptional. If you like it great. If not, listen to other stuff.

My friends and I were the first row behind the railing (for VIP area) so like overall row 4 from stage. Probably 10 - 15 feet from stage our seats were center stage as well. Ken did an amazing job. He was singing, full powerful voice the entire show. One thing I noticed was Ken even took some creative changes with the melody early in the set (which you can hear on the videos everybody posted) which was really awesome. I think like when he talks about the first couple of songs finding himself (after his 1 hour warms ups !) and just feel the song and his voice out for that day. Those creative changes are clearly different than the original recordings. You guys just killed it and it was a blessing to see all of you guys just jam for the first time in decades. Ken is the real deal and it's unfortunate that people have taken this approach to bash him. I want to see a sing off !! :-)

The non-stop uploading of videos against you in my thinking just shows they want view counts and have to keep loading vids to troll and trash you to get the counts. If it was that drastic of a scenario and diabolical event wouldn't one solid truth vid take the platform over going off in a viral storm? I'm totally turned off by the vids even popping up at this point. In the meantime will you pull up an old father daughter vid of Foxes and Fossils Our Lips are Sealed cover and tell me what you think of the harmony and the timing ... I think it's incredible. So, I have known Ken Tamplin for over 30 years and saw him perform live many times, back in the day. He was an incredible talent then and still is today. I am also an avid follower of his work and his vocal academy. Ken is one of the most honest, genuine and sincere people that I have ever known, it is truly troublesome for people that don't even know him to accuse him of being dishonest. This truly shows the character of these folks who clearly don't know the talent of the man that they have the nerve to discredit! An increasingly common problem is singers having a backing track with an old live vocal. Then using a live mic over the top to quietly sing or mouth as and when they like. The debate is whether those sections are really live singing or just basically lip synching.

Now that Ken's publicly acknowledged Marc...really he needs to do a reaction vid to one of his covers. Literally all he has to do is watch one, broadcast it on his channel for those that dont know how bad he is. He can splice in clips from marcs own vids saying how he's the best vocalist around too. The proof is in the singing indeed lmao.. I suggest Eye Of The Tiger, complete with an untuned guitar and a cutoff before the high note. He's also a total bully so I dont feel bad putting him in the spotlight and roasting him as he roasts others. And he removes my comments when I call him out. It blows my mind that Marc has any followers or any money from his courses, but they come from an artificial discord army and his old days of generating views with clickbait under Tristan Paredes who also hates Ken but can at least sorta sing, in a pop way. I used to be on his discord, it was super toxic, i learned nothing, and everyone hated rock, but now they're an expert on it... Bobby Sisk on the other hand, he's pretty good and I do kinda want to see him vs Ken happen though I think Ken would win (who would be our unbiased judge tho?) But he's also a total natural back from his 20s in the band Wanted and various others, there is footage on youtube if you search, and has promotional deals with Marc in the past and he tries to make that not well known. Oh wait I just checked, Ken can't react to Eye Of The Tiger anymore...because Marc removed it lmao. I must've hit a nerve. Dont worry, there's still everything else.

So using Ken’s critical thinking for myself suggestion, I was curious how many words are in an average rock song? Google it, the answer is approximately 1200. Ken sang 13 songs (which comes to 15,600 words). I watched the show twice on a big screen and saw zero discrepancies. People are actually suggesting Ken flawlessly lip-synced 15,600 words without detection over 70 minutes straight? (there was one song called Love Story which looks like he has a back and forth with another vocal part, but I can't quite tell if the keyboard player is singing it (he sang a lot throughout the show) or if one of the vocals was on a backing track. But either way, what in the world is all the fuss about? Seems like a total bizarre lynching to me.

I think this logical way. One live show and you are fraud!? No one can fool people(how many years?) to teach singing decades and oneself can't sing 😂. There will be no students. Impossible. We all have bad singing days maybe tired...etc. Vocal instrument is very delicate. I remember Duran Duran singer cracks his voice badly live. Noone is perfect. It happens. Point is it should be own voice live not AI preprogrammed backing vocals and it was Ken's voice, some says high parts re-recorded 🤔. The show was good...guitar solos amazing.

It's insane how many You Tube Chanels copied the critics, after the first channel posted the news. AI is simply not going to be taken away from industry standards. it's not cool when heavily used.
