That's not true! When Wahl did audio commentary for the WISEGUY DVD set in the mid 2000s, he talked about it extensively.

I just Re watched season 1 and it brought back memories. Unfortunately, it felt dated including some of the production and filming which impacts the overall feeling of the show. I remember how I loved this show but I don’t know that I could say it is better than the Sopranos or Boardwalk Empire. But great show nonetheless.

@@justmytwobits Personally, I couldn't disagree more. For a show that was produced back in the 1980's, I found it was currently (in 2024) more relevant than ever.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this interview. It really connected some dots for me. The Sonny Steelgrave arc was top notch writing and the acting was unbeatable. I will forever LOVE the SS Arc. When the show moved into the Mel Profitt Arc, that was the demise, in my opinion. The writing was more about pushing the envelope of how much sex/perversion/language/violence could be gotten away with on prime time TV back in the day. Now we all know what's going on with Kevin Spacey at the present time, so that explains how he was able to play that perverted role so very well. I had not realized that Stephen J. Cannell had stepped out of writing and producing and knowing that Ken Wahl was involved with production, and maybe even writing, is quite disappointing, though not surprising in hindsight. I kind of wish Cannell had put his foot down much earlier. I could have gotten used to another "agent" for more "cerebral" writing. I will say that re-watching episodes now, I can see the disclosures about the amount of corruption in quite literally EVERYTHING, so in many ways the show was probably a docu-series. McPike was always my fav. The character development was bar none. The show was dark, often demonic, and ultimately they all had to live, and die, in the hell they created.

He ruined his career walking away from Wise Guy in conflict with the biggest show runner of the time. Jonathan Banks and Kevin Spacey kept doing great high profile work and he disappeared.

He always says they parted by mutual consent but I thought it wasn't a good thing to do. I think he thought parts in good films would be offered but I don't think this happened. The accident in 1992 didn't help. Here he is saying he only enjoyed 5 days after filming 67 episodes!!! I can only assume that people involved in acting in good series and films don't actually appreciate how good that series/film is. However I have to add , I think Vinnie's story had (whether deliberately or not) had come to a natural end. He had lost nearly all the people he loved, mother, brother, various girlfriends and also had become totally disillusioned with his job as someone working for the government. Season 4 carries this to a logical and depressing conclusion where it's inferred he has also lost his life. This reminds me very much of Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice. That show (unlike Wiseguy) had lots of different writers, I believe and yet Crockett's progress through it ends up pretty much like Vinnie's and he too leaves the job and goes off into an undefined future. The whole thing might be artistically satisfying (and logical) but in both cases I found the finales infinitely sad.

Stephen Cannell messed up, you can't bring another actor to play a main role that was Ken Wahl's. Ken was the "Wiseguy". Didn't watch the 4th season. Too bad what happened to Ken with his accident on the stairs that broke his back and neck. Messed up his career.

Just let me halt you there , Ken...you said you never had time while involved with Wiseguy to do interviews but you weren't filming one season after another without a break, were you? For instance when you spoke to Cannell between seasons 3 and 4, you were actually making a film in Mexico, were you not? Also I'd dispute that you were on screen 90% or whatever of the time. Some episodes (after season 1) you were hardly in at all, such as To Die In Bettendorf and Meet Mike McPike. And also the Volchek arc which was carried by William Russ. Not forgetting the garment industry one, where fair enough you had an injured achilles tendon and took very little part in the whole arc. I also think that in the episode White Noise, when you apparently eradicated all sense of guilt re Sonny's death, was a big mistake and denigrated the very genuine and moving episode where Sonny killed himself and Vinnie was devastated by grief and guilt. Furthermore I think you didn't care about leaving Wiseguy because of the deterioration in the quality of the writing and because you thought you'd be moving on to better things in films. Finally you say you were just part of a team but without Vinnie, season 4 was a failure. How I wish I'd been able to do that interview and get your comments on these points ;)

Wow. How easy is that for someone like you to say, who wasn't at all involved in the production of the show (unless you were, but somehow, I doubt it). And before you come at me : Of course, I wasn't involved in it either, but I never made such claims as you have. And I couldn't be more appreciative of the show & the amount of blood, sweat & tears that he put into it.

What I said was true. He was never involved in the show 52 weeks a year, 7 days a week. I don't need to be involved in the show to know that. He chose not to give interviews. @@rigelb9025
