It's not about him being Canadian. There are plenty of Black Canadians tapped into their own cultures and hip hop. And it's not even about saying Drake isn't Black because he is Black biracial. It's more about Drake not being true to who he is as a person and feeling insecure about his Blackness. Kendrick hits that hard in this track. Drake''s Jewish (ethnically and religiously), raised by his white Mom and grandparents in an affluent Toronto neighborhood (though his Mom had money and single parent struggles) with regular long distance contact with his Black American Dad in Memphis (who for part of his growing up was incarcerated for drug related stuff) and summer visits to Memphis where he spent time with Black family. He was a popular child actor. There's plenty of authentic material there that he could mine for deeper stuff. Tell your story. Instead, we pretty much do get personas (that are not him - apparent to anyone who actually meets him.
