I’m glad you mentioned the 2014 Grammy’s. When I saw the nominations, I had two immediate thoughts. JiD was snubbed, and Jack Harlow being included was the writing on the wall. I’m prepping myself for the JH album win. Macklemore 2.0
@@1hendrixx7 it's okay if it's not for you, the beauty of music is that no matter your taste, you're bound to find someone catering to it. The forever story feels human, that's my biggest takeaway. It's JID not trying to be a larger than life persona, the musicality of it is sonically pleasing to me, the rhymes/storytelling are so intricate. Beat selection and length of the album.. it just makes for an enjoyable project for me but I understand it can't appeal to everyone and I respect that.
I’m rooting for Pusha. But man, last year was a good one. Lupe, Rome streetz, Nas, JID, Push, Gibbs, Black Thought etc I know I’m missing a few but so much good music dropped.
Hi man, just wanted to say that you've been very influential in the way I listen and appreciate rap. This is probably the best video you could've made for me with Push and Kendrick both being in my top 5 favorite rappers and me loving both albums!
Man I love it's almost dry. Push is one of my fav rappers. Ever. I hope he wins, but.. like you said.. not a good year to have Ye all over your album..
7:34 I think it's funny you said that since I kinda came to the idea that whole album has Ye's spirit all over it! Ye since 2019 and the JIK era has been on this (very contradicting too) religious trip, talking about how the Black community lost their two "dad's" (Father in heaven = Christian beliefs, and literal fathers in Black communities), both of these dad's being taken away by the White power structure. He says we need to return to God and that will solve our issues (same idea that Kendrick via his cousin talked about on DAMN.). A very heavy focus on a "male" or perceived as being male (in the case of God being portrayed as a man by Christians). Kendrick also like Ye is an admitted sex addict, keep that in mind. Kendrick on the other hand is directly reversing that. Although "Father Time" on Mr. Morale talks about daddy issues, it is still on the "toxic or not yet self improved side of the album. Kendrick talking about being "that ni**a" and stuff. Then he proceeds to improve throughout the sessions and the whole second side of the album is about the generational trauma he inherited through his mom and grandmother and the trauma he caused in Whitney, his wife and another mother. But exactly those mothers made Kendrick who he really is ("all those women gave me superpowers I thought I lack", "free the power Whitney"). Also Kendrick on the album makes multiple allusions to the fact he left behind religion and transformed his spirituality into a more pantheistic/nature oriented philosophy ("Talking to the trees, God has taken shape", "live my life in nature only thing relieves me"). It's MOTHER nature too, in contrast to FATHER God. We know what happened to the late Donda West (RIP) and we know Ye's history with women, he always talks about his porn addiction, having multiple girlfriends, orgies. That's why he is so scared to see his daughters grow up, he thinks karma is waiting for him (Violent Crimes). Ye made a turn to the father because dealing with his sex addiction, the loss of his mother, the loss of his now ex-wife is too heavy to bear or confront with honesty. All these issues connected to WOMEN and womenhood, which were always controlled by men especially with religious ideologies connected. Kendrick returned to the MOTHER which he also connects to NATURE. He dealt with his toxic views and behaviour towards women, dealt with his trauma concerning women and left behind the religious beliefs he had that maybe influenced his outlook on sex and women as such. And he says on Father Time he still has those issues, daddy issues. Prof. Skye has an amazing video on Jesus Is King where he talks about Kanye having "daddy issues", I highly recommend that video. I think Kendrick sees alot of himself in Ye. Both are Geminis, very sensitive and sensible people who also are creative,open- minded and very honest and sharing. Ye lost his humanity at some point and still tries to keep some part of his self alive via religion (which he constantly contradicts), a coping mechanism he attached to after the 2018 Red Hat and Bi-polar era, hospitalised and shun from the Black and HipHop community. Kendrick kept his humanity (as of yet) and dealt with his issues, breaking the generational curse. Edit: On the leaked version of "Savior" Kendrick mentions Kanye besides Cole, Future and himself, he replaced Kanye with Lebron on the album...also the line "heroes looking for villains to help" on the same song definitely fits Kanye reaching out to all these right-wing personas...
If it’s one thing I gathered from this, it’s that maybe this isn’t the year to have Ye on your Grammy nominated project. I would love for Push or Kendrick to win but I’m fully expecting to be heartbroken by Jack Harlow winning.
It's really unfair to these artist (Jack Harlow, macklemore) when these non culture institutions place them on this pedestal above others who are of the culture just to be instantly compared to people they would never otherwise be compared to. It never ends well after their singles leave rotation and I think it stunts the artists' growth along with adding to the dissolution of what the awards mean.
Sort of incredible that Ye had such a presence among this year's nominees, despite it seeming like an off year for him. Would've never realized it had you not pointed it out
Since it dropped I have been championing It’s Almost Dry to anyone who would listen. HERBERT was my favorite of 2022. But obviously it dropped to late for the Grammy nom. I’m surprised DRILL MUSIC IN ZION didn’t get a nomination, but I wouldn’t be shocked to find that was Lupes decision.
@@ihateflatbunz I think you want the Grammies to be something they are not and don't even pretend to be. Yes they only nom if you ask for it and pay. It's always been like that lol
I actually think you’re on to something with the Kanye analysis. Considering that Kanye will take the win for himself and may actually use the Grammy’s to validate his position and contributions - yeah they aren’t going to risk that. And so that leaves just Kendrick and Jack Harlow. I am going with Jack Harlow because the controversy from the win over Kendrick will give the Grammy’s more traffic, impressions and conversations for some time to come.
There were a lot of great albums in 2022. I think Kendrick should win amongst the nominations, but I would've liked to seen Cheat Codes, Drill Music in Zion, & Melt My Eyez See Your Future get a nod.
I respect all artists but being an artist that come from the "TRAP TREE" I wanna see Pluto win this man. Trap music is the most innovative music in the last 20 years and hasn’t been be recognized on a mainstream platform yet, the closes we got to that feeling is Wayne taking it home in 08 for C3.
I like Jack, but First Class is just one single. Macklemore had Thrift Shop, Can't Hold Us, and Same Love on the radio that WHOLE year. Grammy goes to Push. When I was in the 3rd Grade I thought that I was gay...
Kendrick's album was great. Nas' King's Disease 3 was the best rap album to me, but, I hear he didn't even submit (or the window had closed, something like that). So, to me, it's really between Kendrick and Pusha.
I think everyone’s forgetting that Macklemore definitely won because of Same Love and the LGBTQ movement. Jack Harlow doesn’t have that kind of backing. Kendrick Lamar actually kind of does with Auntie Diaries.
As I am not a big GRAMMYS dude, I won’t comment on who I think will win, but I do have to say that the omission of JID & Nas gave me big 😒 energy. I did appreciate the mini-album reviews you gave us, Justin-they need to make you a GRAMMY voter, for real.
We're not in 2014 anymore, I'd be extremely surprised if they repeat the fiasco they had with Macklemore (which wasn't even good for Macklemore in the end.
A whole lot of glory in this 🙏🏿👊🏿 After watching this, I really wouldn't be surprised if JH won. Denzel Curry is definitely one of the best albums and his so underrated.
Man Ghetto Gods was fire. JID Forever Story was fire, those project deserve some credit. And kendricks album was bigger than just rap imo. I give it to pusha because it was very rapy rap and have my two favorite producers ever, which will never happen again. They didn't give Ye album of the year, so they owe the camp one. Pusha also went mumber 1. The award show is the only way you can rob me, is definitely a shot at Cardi because Pusha and / or Nip should have won that year. And is Ludacris not trap? He won for release therapy. I also think Wayne had the better verse. Jay seemed as if he was responding to Waynes' impact. I was not impressed with that longggg pat on his own back. But still great music. Great year for hip-hop.
Finally someone who can talk about the 2013 rap album fiasco with perspective - The Heist wasn't a bad album, it was actually a pretty good pop rap record that reached more voters ears than gkmc. Obviously gkmc is wonderful, but the hate on maklemore isn't all that justified most of the time - as if the Grammys haven't pulled a move like that ever before 2013...
Just I agree with all your snubs and only offer that Smino deserves more attention in the mainstream as well. And how is cheat codes not studied in every language program ever!?!? Black Thought forever slept on but... I don't have the answer to these questions 🤷🏾♂️
*It's Almost Dry* *King's Disease III* *Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers* *God Don't Make Mistakes* *Drill Music in Zion* Are my personal contenders. *Kodak* had a great musical year to add; which I do hope outshines Ye. But we can't deny the man's moves within the last year - hands are still all over music.
2022 is the best year for real HipHop in about 20 years! There are a ton of worthy albums... Kendrick, Pusha, Black Thought, JID, _two_ billy woods albums, Nas, Joey B., Elucid, Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, Benny The Butcher, Black Star, Roc Marci, Philmore Greene, Quelle Chris, Freddie Gibbs, etc.
I think that the reason why Denzel Curry doesn’t get enough credit is because of his friendship with Xxxtentacion. Xxxtentacion was a big artist and people found out that him and Denzel were friends. But as soon as X had died, it seems like people cared about talking to Denzel about Xxxtentacion instead of his music. So he was tired of people asking him about his friend and not asking him about him
As fans, we want our far more critically acclaimed albums to feature as nominations. The reality is that we are failing to reconcile the ultimate formula of the Grammys. It's a commercial production and nothing more. Lupe will miss out because of the content he writes. Commercially, they prefer to always "push" the content on self-indulgence. Kendrick is the only one managing to break through. All the reasons have already been stated by Justin.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda hoping Jack Harlow wins just because I think the outrage will be glorious. However, if I had to choose a personal favorite out of the nominees, I would definitely go with Kendrick.
Both Jack Harlow and Macklemore had two songs that blew up, had a majority meh albums, and both are white 😳. I prefer Jack’s rhyming, but nevertheless, was disappointed by this album. But for me, I can definitely see his potential and longevity lasting a long time.
Kendrick in terms of skill may be the best. But, some of the topics covered weren't really for me personally. And it lacks replay value. Again, for me (personally) If it's out of these, I'd choose Pusha T's album. Much more enjoyable and holds a higher replay value. But, if we're being honest lol None of thee above comes close to Cheat Codes.
After watching the breakdown, I won't be surprised if Jack Harlow wins. Been around for a while looking for that breakthrough/validation whatever. JID got snubbed. If I were just going on times played it'd be King Push. Having Ye produce half your album is not a great look. At least I don't have to punch myself in the face.
The fact that Lupe, Nas, JID, and others were left out and Khaled and Jack H were included just exposes the blatant political bias of the grammys. It isn't about artistry (at least not fully) there is clearly more at play than having good albums be nominated and winning. De-values that coveted trophy in my opinion. Then again this isn't anything new. I personally think back to all the 50 cent snubs at his peak debut.
It falls in line if you think about it. Essentially the recording academy is a union made up of members largely from the major label system. People are going to vote for who they know.
I was 100% with Mr. Hunte until he crapped on MCHG. Audibly said “Man, f*ck you”. 😂😂 No hate, loved the piece, love the takes, and my weekend doesn’t kick off right without TBD. Much love to the community.
Pusha T should win. 😇 I think Kendrick will win.🤷🏾♂️ If Jack Harlow wins, it will Macklemore all over again. Hell will break loose. 🤬👿 The album that should have been nominated and should actually win is my favorite album of the year, "Soul Sold Separately" by Freddie Gibs. 🤩
"Magna Carta...Holy Grail, Eww, Gross, Disgusting!" 🤣🤣🤣 but I definitely think Lupe Fiasco and Kevin Gates also had great projects but they didn't receive the praise in mainstream spaces that I think they deserved
I think The Heist was a pretty good album, though Good Kid Mad City was arguably better due to its organization and meanings. I wasn’t mad at Macklemore winning. I feel most people that question the reasoning haven’t listened to the album. Hell, his single on a self published album went diamond in the U.S alone. Are we going to get caught up in the fact that he’s white again? Jack Harlow has friends, but his album was lackluster. Macklemore had a great project come out in the same year that Kendrick dropped on Aftermath. I would’ve been fine if either of them won. If Jack Harlow wins, their’s surely a conspiracy afoot!
I actually don't think JH will win. I don't think the grammys want to deal with another situation like that. I also think Kendrick's power level is much much much higher now than before.
Wtf is Harlow, Future and Khaled? It was Only The fergie song that was a “hit” Only wait for u was a hit, And Only God did(Jay Z, Wayne) was a hit grammys sleepin on rap. No news
