Tyler The Creator is jarring, uncomfortable, uncompromising and courageous-all the things that initially made Hip Hop great. It’s his most resolute GOAT quality. He’s always pushing the margins of what’s accepted.

This is my first GOAT piece in a long time and Tyler felt like the perfect person to examine. The run between Flower Boy to Call Me If You Get Lost is special special and I'd argue better than almost any three album run put out by anyone of his era. Tyler, The Creator is jarring, uncomfortable, uncompromising, and courageous-all the things that initially made Hip Hop great. Thanks for watching it. I hop you enjoy. It's all happening. 🏆🏆🏆

I don't think Tyler can put out a bad album anymore. Whereas some rappers lack of things to say through the years of career, I truly think Tyler is squeezing everything out of his life, living it to the fullest and having new experiences regularly. His interest are so eclectic and it shows through his art, as he always has more things to rap about. If he continues putting out albums like that, he's definitely got a case for GOAT status.

Been a fan of Tyler (and Odd Future) since "Yonkers." Seeing this gave the 19-year-old me some validation, because despite everything that was going on at that time (and people questioning my admiration for OF), I knew they were onto something. They were completely different from everyone else, and they were misfits, but that helped them in the long run. Tyler especially. Tyler writes, composes, and records his own records, and his growth as an artist throughout the years is wonderful to see. Tyler should DEF be in the GOAT conversation. Also, congrats on another Breakdown. We missed you!

I think the fact that he's an album artist in a singles driven era definitely puts him in the GOAT convo. With him being one of the few younger cats making solid complete bodies of work is a breath of fresh air to an "old head" like myself who still solely listens to albums. He's a throwback to our era where acts like Ghostface, Meth and Red, E-40, Too Short, etc didn't always have the biggest radio hits (40 excluded due to late career single success) but they were winning and selling records due to their complet bodies of work.

I think it's understated just how influential Odd Future was at the beginning of the 2010s. People can say what they want about those early albums but for black kids like me in my generation (Gen Z) Tyler and Earl are easily two of the most important figures for rap in the past 15 years. Past that just wanted to say I'm happy to see you doing more of this content again. You've been one of my favorite creators on YT for awhile now.

Wolf is incredibly slept on. the production and narrative (which wrapped up the original 3 project trilogy), really spoke to the polished and improved bars and concepts we’d see in his most recent trilogy. Cowboy, Bimmer, IFHY, 48… all are absolutely incredible. for some of us we’ve seen and known his potential for so long, and dude is probably not going to slow down any time soon. T might not be the GOAT yet, but his complex and incredible production style on top of his constantly improving bars means he might just get there sooner than many detractors might expect.

I waited 8 long hours at work so I could watch this with no distractions. I was honestly shocked when I seen the thumbnail. I’ve been a huge Tyler fan since Yonkers dropped. I believe without him, I don’t get heavy into Frank Ocean which would certainly be awful. I got to see him on the Cherry Bomb and dude really gives his all at shows. Because HE CARES. When he talks about how Jadakiss cares in the Hot97 interview, I really appreciated it, because it’s always shown that Tyler really cares about his craft, whichever one he’s doing, and to know that it is on purpose that his stuff can get so wild or complex really puts it in context. Fun Fact: I recently started worked at a smoke shop and it’s the first job where I can control the music, good bit of Tyler on there. But I love when Trashwang comes on and I can see older people cringe 😝 Glad the GOAT of Hip Hop video essays is back with another GOAT piece. Can’t wait for whatever you got cooking next Justin. It’s always dope. ✌️&💚

You hit all the best points about why I love Tyler the Creator! He's a contrarian and he does his own thing in his own lane, and I love how you mentioned how he goes on geeky sidebars about hard to find Japanese magazines and speaks on rarities he appreciates in his life. He has his own things that he loves to do that are so far outside of the mainstream norm that I couldn't help but to gravitate towards him. Both his music and his interviews are always golden! I feel like he and I would get along perfectly in real life.

SO GLAD to see this series return! Can't wait to see your next pick. Never would have considered Tyler in the GOAT convo before but you made some great points. I would love to see you do a Freddie Gibbs GOAT piece, all 4 of his collab albums are top quality, with 2 (Piñata & Bandana), arguably 3 (Alfredo) of them classics. His lyrics, flow and delivery have gotten better with time and stylistically he can mix it up. Trap rap, gangsta rap, coke rap. Throw in some solid solo projects (You Only Live Twice, Freddie, SSS) and I think he is a definite contender.

Tyler is a top utility player where their stats are all plenty above average but, never quite the best in any one category. He makes art for the sake of art and not for the chase of numbers. He's a 9 out of 10 and the culture would be lacking in his absence. Keep in mind the time Flower Boy came out was also the rise of Soundcloud rappers Lil Peep and XXX. That albums sound was almost an anthesis of what was getting clout at the time. When everyone was blowing out bass and screaming or mumbling about their lonely drug abuse, Tyler created a light, intimate album with clear and precise diction. Tyler is unique and great but, he doesn't really compete with other rappers on style.

I think with Tyler what happened is that he just kept excelling and outdoing himself that eventually you can't deny he's one of the greatest out there. It snuck up on a lot of us, I've listened to every project as it dropped since he's my generation but it still is surprising. I disagree about the line about Em flow on early Tyler projects though. There's definitely that influence but I think Tyler's flow is totally unique and no one else has done anything like it or even tried to imitate it. Sui generis is the term

I don't feel as though I can point to tracks where someone who doesn't listen to rap (or similar genre bending songs), and "if you like this, then you might like..." When HOV says "I didn't cross over, I brought the suburbs to the hood" and made songs with the hottest artists, it creates a vein or a path back to who he is and how he evolved..... but I'd understand.

I remember when I saw that hot 97 interview and I lost my MIND at that "a honda is a foreign" comment. He's not wrong tho🤣🤣!! I think Tyler's transformation is a story of the student becoming the master. Like that interview to me is just one example (of many) which shows that he is and always has been a true student of his craft. I can't remember who said you need to put 10,000 hours into anything to do it perfectly, but I think it's fair to say that Tyler has put his hours in. Not even just in terms of music though, imo he's a creative master in many fields. His last three albums (esp IGOR and CMIYGL) are a definitely a culmination of that work, but even from the OF days I think its always been clear that he is kinda a visionary. He's one of those artists who I'm always so curious to see where he's going to next and for me he definitely deserves a place in GOAT conversations

An interesting angle to look at this at that you touched upon is usage of the internet and how the music distribution has changed with the internet. He's one of the earlier artist to make full use of the internet not as a just distribution but fan growing with how embedded he was into internet/meme culture but then even from the musician standpoint he signifies another shift. The idea of bedroom producers has risen drastically in the past two decades with how music tech has made production accessible but that coincided with the inspiration the new generation of producers being much vaster, because unlike other generations, their music taste wasn't limited to what the older people in their life could afford, but literally anything that tickled their fancy. Tyler wasn't the first to do this but he kinda is a posterboy for it. He brings together band kids, the jazz kids, the hip hop heads, and those hipstery types :P. All that is just a back drop to being a uniquely talented artist and charismatic person but think that contributed to the perfect storm that is his career

But seeing his growth and staying power and being true to himself and his art is one of the greatest things I feel lucky a enough to be here to see. That'd be wild. Busta's unstoppable in a Verzuz in my eyes. But that'd be wild to see.

Have you done any pieces on how short form music changes how we evaluate the careers of artists moving forward? I feel this generation doesn't have many stars to latch onto. I'll go to a college campus and most their music is from the 2010s. They only recognize hooks from tik toks. The fact that making a hit snippet go big seems to dilute the waters. Only a select few can get serious traction but people don't listen to albums as much so that traction doesn't compare to other artists in history. Sorry for the rant but I have a hard time understanding how this generation of artists will be remembered because it feels like less artists are breaking through like 50, Em, Wayne, Ye, Cole were able to. Maybe my metrics are frozen.

He is possibly the greatest artist of all time given his range of art forms. I think no one would say he is the goat of rap and hip-hop though

Why not hip hop? 🤔🤔🤔

Goblin isn’t a 5 Mic album……….it’s a 10 Mic album! Easily one of my favorites of all time. It’s awesome to someone who appreciates Tyler and Odd Future as much as I do. I’ve always been a fan of their movement and work. Golf Wang! Also my guy, go listen to Potato Salad that he did with ASAP Rocky. He absolutely stole that record.

All of the Old Guard still say Jay-Z, Big, and MAYBE Kanye But everyone of the new generation worships Tyler and is influenced by him at every moment Like, Tyler isn't just a rapper, he isn't just a celebrity, he's an icon of a Generation He's the Kurt Cobain for people who wear Supreme If he's not THE GOAT, he's my GOAT Lovely video by the way, the GOAT series always brings good discussion

Great piece. Kendrick is probably traditionally better but Tyler does more diverse art. One of the things we loved about Kanye was how skilled he was as a multidimensional artist. This video makes it clear Tyler should be more appreciated than he his. Time will tell if he has a broader impact on generations ahead.

I’m a huge Tyler fan but I think he’s got one more undisputed classic to get to that goat status.

I don't think I'd ever call Tyler the goat, but he's for sure my favorite artist who's around my age, he's a year older. And in terms of feature steals his verse on GoldLink - you say was the one where I thought he just killed it!
