This is why artists need to learn about engineering to some degree. You need to have control of what you sound like. If you don't know whatchu want then you can't expect an engineer to.
Idk if you'll ever read this comment but do you have some suggestions on how I can educate myself? I'm in that situation currently I can hear how I want to sound but don't know how to communicate that.
@@nathanchestand2048 RU-vid is your best friend. Research and watch as many videos as you can on different recording, production, and mixing techniques/ advice.
Faylsafe Jaxson The one thing I always tell artists is to experiment by writing and recording verses you have no intention making an official release. If you treat it more like practice and experimentation you’ll take the pressure off of it having to be “right” and the result will be you simply learning more about your voice.
As a wannabe rapper, this video is insanely awesome and helpful. So many ideas and paths have opened thanks to this video. You deserve more recognition.
This is dope. Bear in mind that it's more than just the way his vocals are mixed. It starts at the recording process. Kendrick is one of the best in the game when it comes to manipulating his voice to achieve different effects and create different feels. He has so many "different voices". His delivery is really immaculate in that sense
kendricks music is out of this world and i always come back listening to his albums. timeless artist. i know for a fact i will listen to his music in 2069
I think how they achieve the pitching effect is by shifting formants, since just by pitching it down makes the voice sound muffled or pitching it up makes it sound chipmunk-y. Awesome content btw.
Forreal. One of the reasons it stands out is absolutely just as much due to the mixing as the effects used. They are just meticulously applied. The key separating factor is how tediously everything is brought together between recording, effects and mixing. Kendrick is also a master of manipulating his voice on his own, and has been since the beginning.
Great visuals, nice and clean. Maybe work on redrafting your script one more time to really trim it down, I noticed some repetition. Otherwise really promising work, subscribed
Im surprised you didn’t mention the cult classic “Cartoons & Cereal” which gave me the most goosebumps when I first heard the hook. Made it seem twisted and demented; the influence of an adult world pouring into the innocent child’s life.
Thanks for the video. Interesting topic you've touched on. I think something missing from this is Kendrick's known influences that likely contributed to his creative approach. The lower pitched voice of authority (among other things) Kendrick uses in his skits on Section 8.0 are definitely a shout to Tupac's use of the same technique on several songs including Soulja's Story, Souljah's Revenge and, most notably, the interlude on Where Do We Go From Here. The higher pitched voice of reason on Swimming Pools was likely picked from the Outkast movie Idlewild - Big Boi's rooster. Also, when you mentioned the vocal doubling, I was hoping you'd speak of one of the most memorable uses of that effect - Bizzy Bone's verse in Notorious Thugs. Vocal doubling had been a common technique in rap from way back (can't think of a Pac verse without it) but it was strongly felt with Bone Thugs probably because they rap so fast it's difficult to perfectly align them like Em does. Btw, Em goes to great lengths to ensure the vocals are a near perfect match. Great content nonetheless👌 Thanks for the work.
Layering vocals isn't knew but I seriously love the way Kendrick does it. Making the layers sound different. Love someone who pays attention to the craft and tries to make a masterpiece verses just another song
Wow, truly great content. You remind me of What I've Learned only for music production. Keep up the great work, you definitely deserve more recognition!
I was waiting for the day someone would make a video about this subject (TBH didn't expect such an articulate and we'll researched video with top notch graphics). I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed these things about Kendrick and Ali's production. This ana great video. Subscribed for life!
Great video. The only thing I would add is that many of the songs shown here, he had quite a budget for given his label backing. Anything before Good Kid Maad City I could see them have limited resources but that album the production and mixing quality is fire! It must have cost a fortune.
2:42 into my first viewing of your content and I’ve already subscribed. Excellent analytics, presentation, edit and depth. Fantastic work brother, looking forward to watching more of your channel today.
I think a kenny beats denzel one would be cool just because of all the weird vocal effects also. Plus the drop out and switch ups in kenny production is super interesting
holy shit I've noticed it in songs but never consciously. Like I registered the difference but never noticed it was playing a set of vocal instead of just one
