Kenmore Progressive Cannister Vacuum Power Head Wheel/Axle Repair

Disclaimer: PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. Make sure all power is off. I will not be responsible for damages, etc. This is how I repaired the plastic axles, which wear out quickly. Purchase a base from Sears parts dept., then proceed. You need a Philips head screwdriver, some white lithium grease, an old toothbrush, and a kitchen knife to separate tabs. The repair took me about an hour. If your headlight bulb is shot, it's a good time to replace it. Also consider replacing the belt if it shows signs of wear. The wheels themselves should be in good shape.

Thx. The still shots helped me figure out a few misplacements. Was hoping for a more hillbilly solution like fender washers to hold the wheels in place but I can see how a new base might solve a bunch of other problems.

LOL. The new base, plus grease, was a professional solution. I MacGuyver'd some mounts for in-line skate/luggage wheels on ours :-)

* PART my home grown solution motivation, is to avoid parts purchases that reward manufacturers of crappy products.

Thank you! Very helpful. Everything went well with opening up and putting back together. The only problem I have is getting that metal elevator bar in. The vacuum needed a good cleaning, so happy that it is fresh again. I will also put in a new bulb.

Thanks - this gave me the confidence to fix my own. (The wheel "axles" on the base plate had worn out.) I found the base plate as part KC03RBZT1V07 online from a Sears parts site.

Would like to say thanks for putting this instructional video out there. I had a really hard time removing the cover held on by the four clips. Took a lot of force but got it off. Disassembly did not smoothly all with about two dozen little plastic fragments being generated from little clips and outcroppings that broke off as I tried to gently tease the parts apart. I did not do a complete disassembly and only wanted to get the motor off. I'm thinking the plastic was very brittle and could not tolerate any kind of bending which led to so many fragmented little pieces appearing. I'm wondering if the plastic just had became more and more brittle over the ten years I've had the vacuum (but I'm not sure if that even makes sense that plastic will go bad over time like this). Am also thinking that this vacuum was not built to be disassembled otherwise it would not self-destruct when trying to take the major components out for replacement. I ended up just buying a used power head on ebay for $50 instead of trying to repair it.

Can you add more details on getting the elevator mechanism to go back together properly? Mine is not rotating and I can't figure out how to get it to properly connect to the little clip that goes onto the metal lifter underneath.

Ho, thanks for this! I got it all put back together, but now I have this Handle Release piece left over and can't figure out how to get it to stay in there? Mine is Kenmore Aspiradora, #116.23512. Any ideas? Help me, help me!

Not helpful. The little tabs that hold the wheels in their sockets are shot. I'm going to try filling the socket with a wooden plug and putting a screw through the wheel into the plug. Probably have to put a smaller plug into the wheel to support it.

Darn thing is Sears Direct does not list the power head wheels as an available part. I have the same issue, the wheel tabs are busted.

I can't find a replacement part number for that baseplate. I have the *exact* same problem, but can't seem to find the right part. Is there any chance you have that part number handy and wouldn't mind sharing?

Call Sears parts. They're the only ones that I could find to sell it.

Boy I tried this Thought I was being gentle and careful! A part of the new plastic base broke as I tried to reassemble. $80 down the drain. Lesson? Hire a repair expert or just buy cheaper vacs and dispose every few tears?
@johnnyViDeO

You'll probably pay $100. just for labor, plus parts. Invest another $80. and take it easy!
