History Adventures - Taking you to historic places around the World!!
Todays History Adventure video will be focusing on PT-109 and President Kennedy, then Navy Lieutenant and his crew. On August 2, 1943, PT-109 was struck and cut in two by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri near the islands of Gizo and Kolombangara. After the sinking of PT-109 the surviving crew made their way to different islands to avoid Japanese troops. History Adventures will take you to Plum Pudding Island (now called Kennedy Island), Olasana Island and Naru Island. Walk around all these islands and take a look at what Kennedy and his crew would have seen. On August 8, 1943, the survivors of PT-109 were finally rescued. Walking on Plum Pudding, Olasana and Naru Islands is like walking into history. To think of what the crew of PT 109 endured, shark invested waters, Japanese troops, the heat and bugs, just makes the history more fascinating.

When I was a kid, I read the book. Totally unrelated but as a kid in 1965 heading to first grade my Mom went to comb my hair with a part on the side. I complained but she said "that was how President Kennedy parted his hair". Here I am 59 years later, did move the part a bit though. Still makes me smile.

I was 8 years old and watched the early election returns in 1960 with my Dad. Saw the PT109 when it came out and was completely shattered at age 11 when JFK was murdered. I had never seen this island anywhere before, you did a great job putting this together. Can't believe how tiny it is. No hype, just well-researched facts and beautiful photography.

Ron Cross - Amen. I was 6 in 1960, but experienced much of the same with my own Dad. JFK meant a lot to me as a 10 year old boy, and still does today. I was heartbroken by his death, and still get that lump in the throat after a good documentary. His presidency was a time of hope and joy about being an American, for all of us, except the mob. I read PT 109 as a school boy. That's the night JFK injured his low-back. Still, he swam three miles dragging his severely burned shipmate, and then made a second swim that night to find a means of survival -- the coconuts -- on a neighboring island. Reading PT 109 is a profile in leadership, of how a young Navy lieutenant cared for his men in spite of his own injuries. By the way that engraved coconut husk sat in the Oval Office during his time there.

@@kwgm8578 I will say this: there are some revisionists who point to the fact that JFK left his boat vulnerable by just sitting there and thus, he has blame in the deaths of two crew members. I recall that the argument had a bit of validity but in the fog of war many made mistakes there. Unquestionably what he did to save the remaining crew was worthy of whatever medal he received.

Retired CPO here as well. We spent a good amount of time passing through Subic on our way to and from Cubi Point. (P-3 Aircrew) Did go to Grande Island oncefor a little R&R. My only time underway on a NAVSURF was when I was embarked on a Boston Whaler out of Subic and down the coast, where I was dropped off with a Filippino Marine to spot for my crew's MINEX. The Filippino was armed and was there for my protection from leftist guerillas. Sort of felt like the PT 109 crew, hiding on the beach while scanning the water and skies. Fortunately, my experience was a lot less harrowing than theirs. The saga of PT 109 and the Kennedy mystique were huge back in the '60s, and I don't think there's anybody from back then that didn't know the story or not admire JFK. I have a JFK quote right here in my office. It was from a speech he gave shortly before his death that is to me a haunting self-epitaph. On 01 August 1963 at Bancroft Hall at the USNA, President Kennedy said, "I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: I served in the United States Navy."

He saw action in several battles in the Pacific and told me stories when I was a young boy. He was on invasion of Japan and was part of radio Tokyo that was established after the surrender. Great vid. Thanks! What struck me was Kennedy's energy and leadership, and his concern for his men. Also that even when scratching on a coconut, he took care to write out the addressee ("Commander") in full. Thom's note is remarkable for the clear thinking it demonstrates. It keeps to the naval forms, with "To", "From". "Subject" and signature lines, establishes comms, and provides clear and actionable information for the rescue. These two officers were capable and -- especially considering the rather trying week they had experienced -- highly resilient.

My Dad was a Guadalcanal Campaign Purple Heart Marine…thank you for sharing this piece of history. When JFK was campaigning for the presidency, my Dad met him in Edison, NJ, as his motorcade was passing our house. JFK’s car stopped and the president- to- be shook my Dad’s hand after sharing a quick conversation about their war years! My memory to cherish!

Unfortunately it is false. Kennedy and his crew were passed out drunk below decks. There is absolutely no way they could not have heard and seen this Destroyer with its turbine engines approaching. Not if they had an alert lookout. Another Chapaquidik like coverup for a skipper who got away with murder.

Kennedy and his men were passed out drunk below....There was a coverup. Absolutly no way they could not have heard that Japanese Destroyer coming because it had turbine engines. Any half way competent lookout could have warned the crew.

As with so many veterans injured in combat, Kennedy would never fully recover from the back injuries he sustained during the sinking of PT109. He experienced ongoing (and sometimes debilitating) pain for the rest of his life afterwards.

Thank you so very much for providing live images of the location where an episode in the life of the courageous & gallant man our true American President John F. Kennedy took place. Being only 13 years old when he was assassinated and living in Lima, Peru where I remember observing in the Port of Callao large tonnage of sacks containing oats, wheat and other staples sent by President Kennedy for the poor in Latin America. Each sack stamped: "Gift of the People of the United States of America". On the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy death I wrote a new epitaph for him: "FED THE POOR--DEFENDED HIS COUNTRY".

My wife and I lived in Gizo for a year or more and we often visited the islands you show in your video. the waters are so calm and clear now, but not back then when all sorts of challenges faced those men. I have visited and explored the ruins at Rendova and actuall was able to buy a few trinkets, dug out of the ground by locals, 50 cal shells and old coke bottles.......some of the basic infrastructure was there as well. Unfortunately many cyclones have destroyed what was there and today all you have are a few chunks of cement and the odd bit of steel. What a horrible time for those men and all of the men on both sides who gave their lives. fascinating part of the world.
